We Opened Salon Vienna
The beer may have been non alcoholic but that did-n’t mean any less fun We had beer pong, beer and of
course, pretzels!
We Celebrated Veterans
November 11th We honored those
who served our country with a
pinning ceremony.
Families are invited to join their loved ones for a Christmas celebration on Sunday, December 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 in the
afternoon. Enjoy food, refreshments, live music and , of course, pictures with Santa.
This is one of our favorite times of the year, and it’s a gift to spend it with our loved ones. We
can’t wait to see you!
Good Samaritan’s Purse has been collecting shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts to deliver to children in need around the world for over 25 years. This year Vienna Resident Council decided to fill their own shoeboxes. They raised money through recycling aluminum and bottles and were able to send gifts to three girls, ages 2 through 14. The shoe boxes were filled with one “wow” item, little fun toys, hy-giene items and school supplies, then dropped off by a staff member at one of the box pick up locations. Hooray for being able to spread this Christmas cheer to children around the world!

Ingredients
5 lbs russet potatoes
8 ounces cheddar cheese, divided
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), cut in 1/2-inch cubes, plus more for greasing the baking dish
8 ounces sour cream
½ pound bacon, sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces
1 bunch chives, sliced
kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Directions 1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into roughly 1-inch cubes. Put
the potato cubes into a large pot and cover them by about 2 inches with cold water. Bring to a boil over high heat, and continue to boil until the potatoes are fork tender (the potatoes should mash easily when you press one of them with the back of a fork), 30-40 minutes.
2. While the potatoes are cooking, preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9 x 13 baking dish with butter.
3. Grate your cheddar cheese with a cheese Microplane or box grater, then divided your grated cheese in half. Half will get mixed into the mashed potatoes, the other half will go on top of the casserole.
4. In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until most of the fat has rendered out and it's starting to crisp, 7-10 minutes. When the bacon is cooked transfer it to a paper tow-el-lined plate, to drain any excess grease.
5. Once the potatoes are cooked, remove the pot from the heat, drain the potatoes into a colander, then put the drained pota-toes back into the empty pot. Add the butter, sour cream, a tablespoon of kosher salt, and some freshly ground pepper. Mash your potatoes with a potato masher or large wooden spoon. It's OK if there are still a few chunks, as long as every-thing is combined and the butter is completely melted.
6. Set aside about two tablespoons of bacon and two teaspoons of sliced chives for garnish, then add the rest of the bacon and chives to the mashed potatoes along with half of the grated cheese. Mix with a wooden spoon just until everything is combined.
7. Spread the mashed potatoes into the greased baking dish, and sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the potatoes are piping hot.
8. To serve, garnish with the remaining chives and bacon.

“They only have the clothes they were wearing,” the newscaster said. “Everything else is gone.” I’ve been watching the reports of the devastating California wildfires, especially the destruction of the town of Paradise. I lived in Angels Camp during the nearby fires. Recently I read in the paper about a CHP officer who was sent there to patrol against looters. He was assigned to the area of the Camp Fire. He said that at least in Calaveras County there was something that could be looted; in Paradise, there was only ashes. I can imagine what the survivors are feeling, thinking “Where do I go from here?” The world they knew is gone. I read of an elderly couple who managed to escape the flames. “At least we still have our lives,” the man said. Once a cynical part of me would have thought, “So what? You’ve lost everything else.” But I’ve grown since then. Now I see it differently. Whatever we leave behind us, we still have ourselves, and we can still go on. Hard to understand why such changes happen, but sometimes I look back over my life, and I can see a pattern to my changes in direction. I grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania, and when U finished with school, I took a summer job at an antique store. The couple who ran it called it “The Curiosity Shop.” They had a large house and a large family, and they gave me a spare room to stay with them. As a helper, I did odd jobs around the store, moving furniture, cleaning, and so forth. Learning the details of the business fascinated me, though. I enjoyed the buying trips, the auctions, coming to know what to look for, and the history of the various pieces. The store was in a large, two-story building that had once been a feed and grain depot. The front was brick and the rest was wood. I was at an auction with the owners when a phone call came that the building was on fire. The store was a total loss. They caught an arsonist– a kid who just wanted to see something burn– but the life I was coming to know was suddenly gone.
For over 30 years, the Lodi Fire Department has made a tradition of spreading Christmas cheer throughout Lodi by driving Santa around on one of the fire trucks. Each year they choose several different routes through the Lodi neighborhoods so kids can run out and wave to Santa. It’s a much loved Lodi tradition.

I moved back home, but nothing seemed to fit. I found another job, but it didn't’ satisfy at all. When a friend mentioned finding work in Colorado, I got on a bus with him and headed west. Our job quest failed. Almost broke, I sat on a stone bench outside a closed church as the snow fell and wondered, “What do I do now?” The thought came that I had an uncle that lived in California, and maybe he could find us work. And so I came to Stockton. My friend moved on, but I never left. Now I think of the fire that destroyed The Curiosity Shop and ended what ever might have been. It was the start of the journey that led to Stockton. I never understood the destiny or fate that brought me there or kept me there until I met Jan. She’d been raised in Lodi. Of all the places I might have settled, I was drawn to be close to her. Changes in our lives may come suddenly or they might happen over time. There will always be change, though. That’s something I’ve learned to accept. It seems that there’s a gain for every loss if we look for it. Old friends move on, and they make room for new ones by doing so. The same with the world we know. The lives of the fire survivors will be different, but they may find more than they ever expected. All my Best, Jim
