EditorialAs our very first and exciting edition of Good News, we are also very thrilled to announce the 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner for King’s Christian College on May 15. It seems only natural to release both our exciting e-newsletter magazine as well as celebrating our 30th anniversary as an integral part of the local Gold Coast Christian community.

This first edition explores the lives of past students; Naraah Seagrott (1995), Ngahuia Fiu (2002), Sarah Easton (1998) and Boris Budiono (2005). Their stories bring great encouragment and excitement. Good News also announces recent wedding celebrations from all those people you knew ‘all the way back then’ as well as a wrap up from the Class of 1999 10 year reunion last year.

What’s more, King’s Christian College has experienced some exciting changes within the last few years with building developments, laptop programs and events.

Needless to say, this edition is full of King’s news. So go on... enjoy exploring!

Yours truly, Pascale Barbot (2005) - Editor

From the PrincipalRees Davis Welcome to the first edition of our magazine for past students and the wider King’s community. It is fitting that this new initiative coincides with our 30th year of Christian education at King’s.

There have been many changes to our College over that time. We are now the largest Christian school in Australia, where students enjoy state of the art, 21st century facilities. What hasn’t changed though, is the desire to provide a distinctly Christian education for Christian families on the Gold Coast; the desire to provide a curriculum that challenges and extends students, and to be true to our founders’ mission of producing graduates who will be Christian leaders – adults who through their character will be people of influence in whatever field they find themselves.

I hope you enjoy reading about our past students, and if you haven’t visited us for awhile, I encourage you to come to one of our events such as an Open Day or Carnival Day and see what has changed since you were last here.

The Alabaster Box OpenedNaarah Seagrott (Watson) - Class of 1995 The Alabaster Box was opened in 1998 when a group of young adults took hold of a dream and did everything to pursue it, and in pursuing it, they are changing the world, one song at a time.

King’s Christian College past student and band lead vocalist, Naarah recalls her time at King’s where she flourished and was able to develop her love for music and God. “I was always involved in a lot of ‘arts’ things... who knew the impact they would have on my life” said Naarah.

Alabaster Box, with band members Naarah Seagrott, Brett Seagrott, Josh Brown and Tim Braisted formed after playing in their local youth group. After taking their passion overseas, they have grown in popularity and worldwide success. With seven number 1 Australian Christian Radio hits, the band owes all their success to God and following His will.

Naarah remembers a time when the band was stuck in the middle of nowhere, attempting to travel around Australia on a national tour. “We were in a stinking hot van, with a flat tyre, somewhere in outback Queensland ... but God always pulls through,” she says. “We knew His plan in all of it, and I can also even see where His plan was in motion as I look back on my days at King’s”.

“This generation needs to know of a Saviour’s love, and I know that we have a key role to play in that. The calling on our lives is what writes the songs and drives the bus”, says Naraah.

To release their latest album, ‘We will not be silent’, the band returned to Australia during 2009, they are now back in Nashville, Tenessee where they have recolated since 2006.

Sarah Easton

Space and LaceSarah Easton - Class of 1998 Designer extraodinaire and Astrophysics guru, Sarah Easton has been enjoying and exploring her love for both science and design since her time at King’s.

Sarah graduated with an OP 1 and her High School certificate flooded with science subjects. Since then, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Business Management in 2002. She has also created her own unique couture garment brand, Auburnlight.

“I know space and lace don’t usually go together but they are both passions of mine”, smiles Sarah.

“Auburnlight started in response to an awareness that I needed to take my designing more seriously”, says Sarah. “I love the made to measure aspect of creating something unique, and especially seeing the bride at her final fitting beaming as she feels so beautiful in her dress”, smiles Sarah. “You are beautiful, you are worthy, you are a princess. These are the mission statements that have inspired me”.

Sarah decided to continue her love for science and study Honours in Astrophysics mid last year whilst continuing to design part-time. “Both have always been passions of mine. They are more related than at first glance, both having aspects of design; on the one hand being able to discover a bit more about how God designed and created the universe, and on the other to exercise God-given creativity”, laughs Sarah.

“During my time at King’s I learnt that I could apply myself and achieve a good result, how to be myself, and how to time manage. This has encouraged me to focus on what I’m good at (and to fit a lot in) without spending time on things to which others are better suited for”, says Sarah.

Boris BudionoClass of 2005 Boris Budiono, after completing Biomedical Sciences with First Class Honours in 2009 is currently a PhD candidate at the Heart Foundation Research Centre, Griffith University - Gold Coast.

He is teaching lab classes, presenting his research to national and international conferences, and hoping to publish his first research findings this year. “I am researching the effect of exercise, diet and age on resistance to heart attacks as they are still the leading cause of death worldwide”, says Boris.

In contrast and during his time at school, Boris recalls his fondest memories in the King’s art room where he persued creative art. Despite his devotion to both, he admits that long hours spent in a lab and conducting research makes it difficult to devote time to creative arts. “Although I aim to be a researcher, I will always be a closeted artist”, he laughs. “I have a handful of paintings currently underway, and I hope to complete them in due time. I also spend time with graphic design and it has been a great personal hobby” says Boris.

Boris says, “Kings taught me how to balance the skeptical nature of being a scientist, with child-like awe and wonder, and I would recommend more like-minded people to consider medical research as an avenue to release their creativity in a constructive and meaningful way”. “I simply like doing all different things, and medical research encompasses such a broad range of skills and is of such great significance today, I was naturally drawn to it” says Boris.

King’s UpdateKing’s has continued on an exciting innovative journey over the past year. Thanks to government grants we have been enjoying the luxury of new buildings. Construction for a new 10 classroom primary block started in June 2009, now completed, is adjacent to the current library.

A new undercover area, on the school oval, was also built over the summer holidays and it will be the cover for the swimming pool which will be built at a later date. A new lower primary library with computer facilities was also completed end of February 2010. To view building progress please visit our building program www.kingscollege.blogspot.com.

This year we will be seeing the introduction of the 1 to 1 Mac laptop program. This exciting initiative will kick off in Years 5, 8 and 10, flowing in to subsequent grades in ensuing years. In preparation for this major change, King’s staff have been attending in-service training over the past two years to learn the best practices and systems.

With the introduction of the 1 on 1 laptop program comes the need to choose an effective and efficient Learning Management System (LMS) to enhance learning and curriculum delivery. A LMS is a digital classroom with digital resources and can be used by both teachers and students, giving access both at home and at school.

The ultimate purpose with all these new initiatives is to enhance learning and computers will only be used where they improve the delivery of education.
