Epiphany’s Children Can “Walk the Way of Jesus”

Boys & Cake Seem to Go Together!

The Church was filled with children from Nursery through 12th grade. The teachers are thrilled to be in our new large classrooms! Enrollment to date is 48 and growing. Miss Gina is in her 5th year as Church School Director and we have a new teacher, Patricia Adams, who is teaching the 2nd through 4th grade class. The teachers and Director were installed September 13th by Fr. Sakin. Would you believe no hat for Miss Betty-Jeanne – flip flops of all things!

Our teachers look forward to another exciting year spreading the word of Christ and seeing Christ in our children.

On July 12 Harlan Richard Commeford became the newest member of Epiphany, when he was baptized at the 10 a.m .service.

The Church School Teachers Had a Retreat

Planning for the 2015-2016 Church School year began at the Church School Committee retreat held on July 25th. The theme chosen for this year's Church School Kick-Off celebration on September 13th is “Walk the Way of Jesus”. The Kick-Off marks the first day of Church School, an exciting day of reuniting with all of our friends after summer break. As is our tradition, a sheet cake will be served at coffee hour. This year brings some changes. The committee is thrilled to welcome Pat Adams as the new 2nd through 4th grade teacher. The committee will be merging 7th through 12th into the large corner room in building 2. Three parishioners will co-teach this class on a rotating basis. The classroom splits will be as follows: Mary Feyt Nursery Betty-Jeanne Cousins PreK - 1st Pat Adams 2nd - 4th Alison Jimenez 5th - 6th Melissa Farr, Tan Wells & Roberto Jimenez 7th - 12th Plans for the year include All Saints Day and Mother's Day music, youth food collection, Family Christ-mas Eve service - extra special for the first time in our permanent home, Mother's Day flowers, flow-ering the cross and Easter Egg Hunt. The committee is going to continue the Haiti outreach project and will be re-educating our students about Haiti's needs through videos and discussion. The committee is so grateful to our congregation for all of the ways our youth are so generously sup-ported and loved. Let us all “Walk the Way of Jesus” with our precious children!

We Welcomed Harlan Richard Commeford

From the Sr. Warden: The Vestry met with Bishop Dan and Canon Catherine on July 22nd. The Bishop and Vestry concur on the following:

· Hire a Priest in Charge Under Special Circumstances (up to 3 years); · If Priest is a good fit with congregation then he/she would become Rector with the Bishop’s

approval; · Bishop will receive potential candidates and once approved will notify and send the Sr. Warden the applications; · Once candidate(s) are received by Sr. Warden, interviews will be set by the Vestry for the potential candidates.

Remember – your Vestry members may not discuss any of this with you – this is confidential information since a priest may not have notified his or her current parish of a desired move.

We lost one of the founders of Epiphany when Phil Apel went home to God on July 31, 2015. A Memorial Service was held at Epiphany on Aug 8th with 80 in attendance. Dale, along with Rick and Philip, their sons, appreciated the beautiful memorial service and reception held in Phil’s honor. The family asked that if you wish to make a donation in Phil’s honor, please make it to Epiphany or the Diabetes Association.

And Said Goodbye to Dear Friends

Paulino Chan

Paulino Chan passed away on Sept. 15th with his 3 sons and wife Asuncion at his side. He is with our Lord where there is no pain or suffering. We will miss his wonderful smile and his faith in Epiphany Episcopal Church. A Memorial Service will be held at Epiphany on Saturday October 17 at 11:00 a.m. Contributions may be made to the Epiphany Building Fund in lieu of flowers.

Epicenter on the Parkway has Become a New Outreach Focus

Epiphany Church wants to make a difference in the lives of the needy in the inner city … and you are invited to help! On the first Sunday of each month, join us in bringing a specific item of food or a monetary dona-tion, to be delivered to the food bank at Epicenter on the Parkway. The center is located on the property of Christ Church on Maryland Parkway and is a 501c3 organization, which allows it to apply for faith based grant money. More than 1000 individuals each month receive food, which has either been donated by churches, or purchased with donations from churches, individuals, grants or organizations like Treasure House. Please consider helping Epiphany make this outreach project the most successful ever! Sunday October 4th is Peanut Butter Sunday! Please bring as many jars as you are able and place them in the bin in the narthex. Or, consider making a gift of money that will allow discounted food to be purchased through Three Square, the valley’s food bank that supplies food to most of the pantries in the city. Checks are easy to transport to the center, have more buying power through Three Square and are a charitable donation. All kinds of food are needed at the pantry: tuna, spaghetti, beans, ravioli, canned fruit, and canned vegeta-bles just to name a few. We will choose a single item, like peanut butter, to highlight each month, but if you find a sale at your grocery store that tickles your fancy, please buy a case and donate it! In advance, we thank you for your consideration and participation in this very important outreach effort. You can make a difference in the life of a hungry family.

On July 18, Bishop Dan led 25 interested people from the Diocese in a discussion about his book, God of Our Silent Tears. Rosalie Marinelli and Helene Spaulding organized the workshop in our Meeting Room, so it was also a good opportunity to show our new church to others from the Diocese. The format included lecture, small group discussion, and Q & A—also an excellent lunch!

Nevadans for the Common Good Shared Its 2015 Legislative Accomplishments

Epiphany Parishioners Moved Away

Robert Hoo, Director of Nevadans for the Common Good, sent us this update on its activities: Thank you for participating in Nevadans for the Common Good! Due to your hard work and the in-volvement of your congregation/institution, we were able to accomplish the following things during the 2015 Legislative Session:

· Increased funding for public education by over $500 million. This money will be targeted for carefully designed programs that target the most disadvantaged children. This includes new programs for children living in poverty, English Language Learners, special education students and other important initiatives. We will continue to monitor the implementation of these programs.

· Addressed the needs of seniors and their family caregivers. The CARE Act has been signed into law. This bill recognizes the important role of family caregivers and improves communi-cation between hospitals and caregivers. We also increased the number of Medicaid Home and Community-Based Waiver slots by 173. These waivers enable low-income seniors to ob-tain in-home services and avoid being institutionalized.

· We also supported several other measures addressing topics such as guardianship, immigra-tion, teaching scholarships and many more. Together we are improving the quality of life for our community. We look forward to the work that we will do together in the coming months and years! Check out their new website at http://www.nevadansforthecommongood.org
