Good Neighbor Club Newsletter
January February March 2018
Betty Marthaler, Good Neighbor Club Director Dear Good Neighbor Club Members,
I hope each of you have experienced a lovely Holiday season and will be able to enjoy some of our upcoming
day and extended trips. As the New Year begins and my planning continues, please know I am always
interested in activities you may be interested in and places you wish to travel to. As an example, during
November some of our GNC members had the privilege of traveling to Peru, where we had the amazing
opportunity of viewing Machu Pichu “the lost city of the Incas” and onto the Galapagos Islands enjoying a 4
day cruise while visiting the various islands each day. This trip was a suggestion by our GNC members and
was certainly enjoyed by all of us who were fortunate to travel to this part of our amazing world.
Thank you to our members who donated and for the many workers that came and helped wrap over 100
Christmas presents for our children in Kandiyohi County that are served by our Food Shelf. We were able to
put smiles on many children on Christmas Day because of your donations. I so much appreciated all the help
we had wrapping—many hands help make the work load light.
In February we will have the awesome experience of traveling on the beautiful Caribbean Princess as we sail
through the newly constructed Panama Canal and experien
ports.

Laughlin Nevada
Once again, I will work on scheduling a 5 day—4 night trip to Sunny Nevada. It will be based on availability
at Riverside. I will not schedule over Easter. If you are somewhat interested, please call and leave me a
message if I am not in. When I get confirmation from them, I usually only have about 1-2 days to get
everyone booked. I will call everyone in the order that they have contacted me. Because you put your name
down, you will not be obligated to go. I just merely need an idea how much interest I have for the trip.
Currently I am doing my best to get airfare and hotel book for this trip.

Orpheum Theatre
Tuesday, June 26th 7:30 Production
The year is 1907. It is 10 years after his disappearance from the Paris Opera House and the
Phantom has escaped to a new life in New York where he lives amongst the screaming joy
rides and freak show of Coney Island. In this new, electrically charged world, he has finally
found a place for his music to soar, but he has never stopped yearning for his one true love and
musical protégée, Christine Daae. Now one of the world’s finest sopranos, Christine accepts
an invitation to travel from Paris to New York to perform at a renowned opera house.
Christin’es marriage to Raoul is suffering at the hands of his drinking and gambling and they desperately
need the financial rewards that America can give them. In a final bid to win back Christine’s love, the
Phantom lures her, Raoul, and their young son Gustave, from Manhattan to the glittering and glorious world

Oberammergau—The Passion Play 2020 which will be held in Germany
We were fortunate to do this trip 2010 with Globus and we have been fortunate to hold limited space on this

having Rachelle from Globus be our presenter.
Japan Spring Flowers and Golden Cruise
April 18th—May 2nd
Join your GNC Members as we fly to Tokyo and enjoy an evening at the comfortable airport hotel where we
can relax and start to soak in the atmosphere of the Orient. We will board the beautiful “Diamond Princess”
and begin our cruise. Some of our stops include the Kanmon Straits, which is the stretch of water separating
two of Japan’s four main islands. The second largest city in South Korea, Busan, is our gateway to a fascinat-
ing land whose culture is a unique amalgam of old and
new. We will visit Saliminato, Kanazawa, Hakodate, and
Aomori. Aomori derives much of its beauty from the ap-
ple orchards and cherry blossoms that encompass its land-
scape and the snow covered Hakkoda Mountains that look
out from a distance. We will have additional time to
spend in Tokyo and continue on to Kobe which is the fifth largest city in Japan before we transfer to the air-
port and fly home. Space is very limited on this trip, as most space is sold out, but if you have an interest,
please call, and I will forward you further information. At this time, travel spots will be based on availability.
Door County, Wisconsin
September 11th—14th
While all details have not yet been finalized, I can assure you we will have a pro-
fessional step-on guide during our 2 day tour of the islands. We will spend 3
nights at the Newport Resort in Egg Harbor which will include 3 breakfasts, two
dinners, including an authentic Door County Fish Boil.
The “Door County Experience Tour” will focus on the cultural and natural history
of Door County. Highlights include a ferry ride across the waters of “Death’s
Door” to Washington Island for an afternoon tour of the largest island in the coun-
ty. On the Island, we’ll visit a lavender farm, School House beach, Jackson Har-
bor Commercial Fishing Museum and docks, and a stave church. On our ferry
through Death’s Door, we’ll see the Plum Island Light (1889) and Pilot Island
Light (1858) and learn about how Door County got its name from this famous pas-
sageway. Also included is the County’s natural and cultural history as we drive
through quaint villages and natural landscapes of the County. A drive through
Peninsula State Park to visit an authentic pioneer cemetery also puts us on the Ni-
agara Escarpment, the major geologic feature in Door County, providing us with
grand water views at Sven’s Bluff of the Bay of Green Bay and on a clear day, a
view of the State of Michigan looking west. A stop on day two at Cave Point County Park contrasts the bay
side’s steep topography with the lakeside and highlights the power and aesthetic effect of water on the rocky
shore with wave cut caves. We’ll visit Seaquist orchards and farm market for a guided ride through the or-
chard and market visit. We’ll visit another orchard for apple picking (season permitting).
In case of inclement weather and a bus trip needs to be cancelled, please listen to Q102. If I must can-
cel, I will put it on their station.
