Hi, my name is Earl, and this is my pet ostrich, Petunia. She is the fastest ostrich in Tate County. We travel from fair to fair

racing. Today, we are in DeSoto County racing against the number one ostrich in the state of Mississippi, Long Legs Larry.

Petunia and I walked by Larry’s stable where they flaunted all of his 1st place trophies.

I looked over at Petunia and asked, “We’re going to win this year aren’t we?”

Petunia looked at me and replied, “I’ve been exercising and eating right, so as long as you lost the weight like you promised we

should.”

I glanced down at my stomach and with a look of guilt smiled back at Petunia.

I didn’t tell her about the three pies I ate last week. I knew there was no way that we would win, but there was nothing I could

about it now. I placed the saddle on Petunia and hopped on. Petunia yelled, “I thought you were going to lose ten pounds!”

“Well,” I said nervously, “ last week was Christmas, and my wife made a blueberry, apple, and peach pie. I took one bite and

had to have more. I’m sorry, Petunia. You know my one weakness is pie.”

Petunia replied, “ I already know you wouldn’t hold up your end of the deal, so I made other arrangements.”

I looked at Petunia and wondered, what did she do? I hope it’s nothing illegal. I led Petunia out of the stable to the race track.

As soon as we were out, I felt like I had thousands of people staring at me, but when I looked around, I only saw a few families.

My heart sank ,and I felt defeated already Petunia lined up next to Long Legs Larry. They looked at each other like they were

two wolves after the same prey. I had never seen Petunia so determined. I was still curious what she had planned, but within

seconds the bell sounded, and we were off like a flash. I was so caught up in the excitement that I didn’t realize that we were

winning. I didn’t dare take my eyes off of the finish line. Once we crossed the finish line, I decide to look back and see what

happened. To my surprise Larry never left the gate. He was throwing a fit and bucked his rider off. I looked over at Petunia

and saw her grinning from ear to ear. I never questioned her about what she did. I was too afraid that she would do the same

thing to me.
