Half-Square Triangles On the backs of a white 4.5” square, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Pair a white square with a colored square, RST. Sew 1/4” from both sides of the line. Cut on the line. Open and press towards the darker fabric. Trim the HST to a 4” square, keeping the seam in the center of the square.
Quartered Squares Cut each 5” square into quarters on the diagonal. Line up a white and colored quarter, RST. Keep all of the white quarters on the top and sew them all in the same direction. This will ensure that you will have the right parts to create your quartered squares. Pin and sew the quarters together starting at the pointed end. Press flat. Locate an Orange set and a Dark Cats Gray set. Pin and sew two half squares together, nesting the seams. Press towards the darker fabric. Refer to the list below for the color pairings. Trim to a 4” square, keeping the seam in the center of the square. There will be 2 quarters of each color triangle left over.

2.5” strip Locate two white 2.5”squares and a colored 2.5” x 7” rectangle. On its right side, line up a 2.5” square and pin it down. Repeat on the left side. Sew both sides. Press towards darker fabric. Do this for a total of 26 (lap quilt) or 50 (double quilt).

Bat Ear Row Locate two HSTs and a bat ear square. Pair the white edge of the HST (black edge on the bottom) to the left bat ear (black edge on the bottom). Pin and sew together. Press flat. Pair the white edge of the HST (black edge on the bottom) to the right bat ear (black edge on the bottom). Pin and sew together. Press flat.
Bat Ears Square On the backs of the colored 2.5” squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Locate a white 4” square. Place a 2.5” square slightly after the left bottom edge (and slightly after the left side) of the square with the diagonal line touching both edges. Sew on the line. Trim 1/4” from the seam. Press towards the darker fabric. Trim to 4” square. Place a 2.5” squares slightly after the right bottom edge (and slightly after the right side) of the square with the diag-onal line touching both edges. Sew on the line. Trim 1/4” from the seam. Press flat.

Bat Top Locate a bat ear row and a 2.5” strip that have the same fabrics. Line up the colored edge of the ear row to the 2.5” strip. Pin and sew. Press towards the darker fabric. Repeat for a total of 26 (lap quilt) or 50 (double quilt).

Bat BottomLocate a quartered square and two 4” white squares. Pin and sew the white edges of a quartered square to the white square. Repeat on the other edge of the quartered square. Press towards 4” square. Do this for a total of 13 (lap quilt) or 25 bat blocks (double quilt).
Bat BlockLocate a bat bottom. It will have two different colored fabrics on it. Start with one colored quarter edge. Pair it with the same color bat top. Pin and sew it to the free edge of the 2.5” strip. Press towards the 2.5” strip. Repeat for the other edge of the bat. Do this for a total of 13 bat blocks (lap quilt) or 25 bat blocks (double quilt). The block should measure 11” x 15” including seam allowences.
Bat Row OneLAP SIZE - Locate three bat blocks and two spacer blocks. Pin and sew a bat block to both sides of a spacer block. On the right side of the bat block row, pin and sew a spacer block. On the right side of the spacer block, pin and sew a bat block. Repeat for a total of three bat rows. DOUBLE SIZE - Locate four bat blocks and three spacer blocks. Pin and sew a bat block to both sides of a spacer block. Repeat. On the right side of the bat block set, pin and sew a spacer block. On the right side of the spacer block, pin and sew a bat block set. Repeat for a total of four bat rows. Press seams towards the spacer block.

Putting the Lap Size Quilt togetherPin and sew a bat row one to the top and bottom of a bat row two. On the bottom edge of the group, pin and sew a bat row two. On the bottom edge of the group, pin and sew a bat row one. Refer to the diagram.
Adding BordersSew the 3” strips of the white together to make one long strip. Press seams flat. Measure width of the quilt. Cut two border strips that measure this length. Sew these strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams to border fabric.
Measure the length of the quilt top including the borders just added. Cut two border strips to this length. Sew to the sides of the quilt. Press seams to border fabric.
Bat Row TwoLAP SIZE - Locate three spacer blocks and two bat blocks. Pin and sew a bat block to both sides of a spacer block. On the free side of both bat blocks, pin and sew a spacer block. Repeat for a total of two rows.DOUBLE SIZE - Locate four spacer blocks and three bat blocks. Pin and sew a Spacer block to both sides of a bat block. Repeat. On the right side of a spac-er set, pin and sew a bat block. Pin and sew the bat block to the left side of the spacer set. Repeat for a total of three rows.
Press seams towards the spacer block.

Putting the Double Size Quilt togetherPin and sew a bat row one to the top and bottom of a bat row two. Repeat once. Locate a bat row two, pin and sew the row groups to the top and bottom of the bat row two. Refer to the diagram.
Adding BordersSew the 4” strips of the white together to make one long strip. Press seams flat. Measure width of the quilt. Cut two border strips that measure this length. Sew these strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams to border fabric.
Sew the 5.5” strips of the white together to make one long strip. Measure the length of the quilt top including the borders just added. Cut two border strips to this length. Sew to the sides of the quilt. Press seams to border fabric.

Quilt as desired. Use 2.5” strips to bind. Lap Quilt - 2/3 yards cut into seven 2.5” strips or Double Quilt - 3/4 yards cut into ten 2.5” strips
