Gomat i i s a second home in Malavl i , Maharashtra, named lov ingly in the memory of the c l ient ’s mother. The home has a rather pecul iar s tory. We were commiss ioned to demol ish an ex is t ing s t ructure, and bui ld a new home on the same s i te.

The in tent ion was to del iver a vessel for the fami ly to l ive a l i fe under the sk ies, a place to enjoy the rain, wet breezes, encounter rare bugs, a place to grab the dew laden cool grass between thei r toes. An in depth s tudy prompt-ed us to re imagine the idea of occupying the s i te. We chose to re tain and recycle the debr is of the demol ished bui ld ing as a mound.

The s leeping spaces form an in t rover ted assembly around ex is t ing t rees on the ground level where one descends in to the coolness and comfor t of the ear th.

The main pavi l ion-esque l iv ing space on the upper level faces North, over looking the mature t rees which s tand on the s i te.

The house has been imagined in blue-grey Kotah - an Indian s tone which forms the main substance of the express ion. The naturalness, monol i th ic qual i ty, cost , avai labi l i t y in di f ferent formats and wear-worth iness of the s tone led to i t s choice as the best defence agains t the harsh humidi ty and f ierce rain that af fects th is region. Kotah s tone is used in several forms - f rom f ine chips, to s t r ips, to s labs, to sol id cove cut sk i r t ing.

The pool s i t s at the upper level terrace. I t seems to r ise out of the mound and out towards the fo l iage.
