GREENHILL RESIDENTIALOTTAWA, ONTARIOStudio 6 / Fall 2010The purpose of this project was to design an urban residential complex as a majorconstituent of Ottawa’s downtown core. The given site is in close proximity to officebuildings, shopping, restaurants, schools, parks, and a variety of amenities. It is anappropriate site for families with children, students, and seniors. The Greenhill projectoffers a new street and an open courtyard on the site, which presents a pedestrianroute connecting the adjacent streets. This street-oriented urbanism circulates both the residents and the general public through the site. The project comprises ultra high density, low-rise, and mixed-use schemes. The typical unit is a three-bedroom maisonette, stacked on top of two one-bedroom flats, which are in turn on top of a retail unit. Every unit has its own private exterior space and underground parking. The project respects the existing fabric of the neighbourhood by maintaining the overall height, style, and material palette.

SAN GIMIGNANO SITE PLAN

SAN GIMIGNANO PANORAMIC TOWERSAN GIMIGNANO, ITALYStudio 3 / Winter 2009The town of San Gimignano is known for its medieval towers. This project is adesign study of one of the stone-walled towers with the purpose of rehabilitatingit while sustaining the existing skyline of this historic town. The proposed additionwraps itself around the existing tower in the form of five platforms that areconnected by outdoor stairs. Although it encircles the structure, the additionrespects the integrity of the existing masonry walls and stands independently. The platforms sit on steel frame structures that are cantilevered from numeroussteel columns. These platforms offer panoramic views of the dense small townand create sunbathing opportunities for visitors.

PRAGUE / THE VLTAVA SITE PLAN

Studio 7 / Winter 2011Prague was established as a city around the shallow banks of the Vltava River.

The objective of this project was to revitalize the existing floodwall structures andincorporate both walking and seating areas along the river, creating a moreinteractive dialogue between the river and passersby. The proposed public

spaces provide simple settings for socializing and resting while remaining true to the urban context. Two of the four proposed public spaces are included herein.

In one proposed location, the planned floodwall form acts as a cistern and holds the water in. The other floodwall venue is a small-scale amphitheatre that stages the river.

INTERMISSION PAVILIONCARLETON UNIVERSITY, OTTAWA

Studio 4 / Fall 2009The pavilion was designed to host the annual “Dinner is Served” event at

Carleton University. As a group, sitting on the sloped site inspired us to create astructure from which the river could be viewed and enjoyed. The trees on site

influenced our design; strings were tied around them at different heights creatinga dynamic feel that gave direction to the design process. The main elements of

our design comprise wood platforms, canopies made of triangular pieces offabric, a screen to block the headlights of passing cars, and a red cube that

unfolds to form a fire pit at the centre of the pavilion. The hors d’oeuvres and teaprepared on the cube were quite popular on the cold night of the event.

Professional Project / Summer 2012The Recognized heritage building is located in Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, which contains many recreational routes for cyclists, pedestrians, and disabledvisitors. The building was originally used as the headquarters of the historicalGilmour and Hughson lumber company. Today it is owned by the NationalCapital Commission and is used as storage for bicycles and spare tires and holds a bicycle rental/repair shop. It also offers over-utilized public washroom facilities that do not meet the growing demand. The use of the building in itscurrent arrangement is damaging the heritage fabric of the building.

GILMOUR & HUGHSON BUILDINGGATINEAU, QUÉBEC

The proposed solution is to facilitate on-site storage for the bicycles but external to the building, and to create additional accessible washrooms inside the building. The proposal for storage space introduces shipping containers placed on concrete footings with a pedestrian/bicycle pathway passing through the middle under a canopy. The design is flexible to accommodate additional containers in the future. Historic images of Jacques-Cartier Park are imprinted on the container walls as a reminder of the history of the lumber industry in the area. The second part of the project is the proposal of various design schemes for additional accessible washrooms. The schemes are designed in an evolutionary order and each scheme contains its own advantages and disadvantages.
