MAY 2019 Volume 2 – Issue 5 Riding a Motorcycle in the Rain: 10 Tips There are essentially two types of riders. No, I’m not talking about cruisers and sport bikes, I’m talking about those who love to ride and those who live to ride. For the latter, the need to be on a motorcycle isn’t limited to sunny summer days. And the truth is, riding a motorcycle in the rain can be enjoyable if you do it right. Here are 10 tips on to keep your rolling through the wet: 1) Learn to Like Coffee – What are two things that don’t mix? Yep, oil and water. When the latter starts falling from the sky, seek shelter for a few minutes. Roads are slickest when it first starts to rain. After about 15 minutes a lot of the oil will wash away and your tires will be less likely to slip. 2) Wear the Gear – Ever been hit by hail at 60 mph? It hurts! Rain drops, too, can deliver a hefty sting. Getting beat up by Mother Nature is distracting and can negatively affect your riding. Helmet, gloves and durable clothing are invaluable in the elements. The same is true of rain-specific clothing. Especially rain pants. Being wet will make you cold and distracted. 3) Be Seen – Other road users are the biggest threat when riding a motorcycle in the rain. Drivers become confused or flustered by wet conditions. If you’re smart enough to wear rain gear, be smart enough to wear visible gear. Reflective strips, Day Glo, whatever. Your bike should be visible, too. Make sure your headlight/running lights are on and that you are using your signals well in advance of turns and lane changes. 4) See – Just as much as you want people to see you, you want to see them. Look as far ahead as you can, and constantly check your mirrors and blind spots. Advanced riding instructors suggest doing mirror/blind spot checks every 8 seconds. 5) Do the Thinking for Everyone – The most useful piece of safety gear can be found in the space between your ears. Use it to anticipate how drivers around you will respond to given situations. Do not ride with an expectation of being seen or your actions being understood. Do not expect other road users to adhere to the rules. Don’t focus on what people should do but instead what they will do. Chapter Director Article (Continued)

6) Take the Middle Ground – When it comes to lane position, many riders prefer the tire tracks of cars, thinking the lane’s middle section will have oil dripped from engines. Increasingly, this thinking is outdated. It may still be true at intersections but on longer stretches, the middle of a lane is often the best place to be. Modern cars and trucks simply don’t leak fluids like they did a few decades ago. And heat from engines helps dry that part of the road more quickly. Additionally, if a road has not been resurfaced in a while cars’ tires may have worn it down. This can mean tire tracks are slicker than the middle of a lane, that they are more inclined to hold pools of water, and they are more broken up. 7) Be Steady – In the rain your riding should be fluid. Focus on keeping everything steady. Don’t make sudden lane changes and don’t get wrapped up trying to avoid slick surfaces like paint in the road or manhole covers. Modern tires provide better grip than the rubber our parents rode on, so it is often wiser to ride steadily over obstacles rather than veer wildly to miss them. 8) Be Ready – In addition to keeping track of everything that’s around you and thinking about what those things might do, make sure you’re ready to respond. Part of this is mental, of course, but part of it is physical; be ready to act. If you are riding in busy traffic, cover your front brake. When it’s raining your feet should never be up on highway pegs. 9) Be Cool – Being angry will not make you dry. In the rain you’ll see a lot of people doing a lot of stupid things and it can be easy to lose your temper, but now is not the time. Keep looking, keep thinking, keep making good decisions and you’ll keep riding. 10) Ride Your Own Ride – This is the Golden Rule of motorcycling. No matter where you are, no matter who you’re with, no matter what the weather is like. Always ride within your abilities and comfort level. In the rain this becomes even more true. Don’t worry about what others are doing or would do. This is your ride. Make it safe, make it comfortable and enjoy it. Taken from Throttle X Blog, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014

Chapter D – Team Objective

Brownie Bites

This is the next in a series of articles taken directly from the GWRRA’s Officer’s Handbook. Every month there will be a new topic that will hopefully inform and educate you on the Gold Wing Road Riders Association’s policies and procedures. I hope that you find this information useful. PA-D Chapter Director, Brownie Statler

GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION GWRRA, ITS EVENTS AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR DRUGS

While GWRRA makes no attempt to legislate policy as it relates to an individual’s freedom, we must give strong consideration to potential liability exposure of the Officer group. For this reason, GWRRA CANNOT sell alcoholic beverages. We recommend that people follow the laws in their individual state or country. The motto, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk” or “Don’t drink and drive” are excellent mottos to guide us in the example we set. But remember, riding a motorcycle and being impaired (alcohol and/or drugs—that includes prescription and non-prescription) is NEVER a good idea. Think about the people who are riding with you and wait until you are at your destination for the night/day. Brownie

Chapter D MEC Tim and Crystal Brakebill

How do we ensure PA Chapter D thrives for years to come? By recruiting new Chapter participants as well as retaining our existing participants. The first interactions with our Chapter make a lasting impression on a prospective participant. When we do get prospective participants to attend our Gatherings or rides, do you thank them for coming? Do you get to acquainted with them and make them feel welcome? Is the GWRRA motto, “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge,” immediately apparent in our Gatherings and rides? Once you meet a prospective, do you make sure they feel they are invited, why they should participate and how important their contribution can be to the Chapter? Your Chapter leadership team is working on a plan of action for us (by us, I mean all Chapter D participants, not just your leadership team) to get out and invite prospective participants to our Gatherings, rides and events. The first step is to Advertise, Advertise, and Advertise some more. The second step is for us to get out and participate in bike nights and bike events. Hand out GWRRA brochures and talk with people. Build up the Chapter, our rides and events. We need to provide the “hook” needed to build a relationship that lasts. But first, we have to throw out the “bait.” Are you engaged and committed? Bring a friend. Bring a friend of a friend. Are you willing to help set up a table and give out information about our Chapter? I don’t mean just sit there and idly chat with each other at an event. I mean get out and sell our Chapter! We can hang flyers in the windows of merchants and dealers that will let us. But first we have to get out and ask. New participants are essential to the continued success of our Chapter. Without a flow of new participants, our Chapter will stagnate or over time will cease to exist. New participants provide the opportunity for us to mentor and pass the torch of our Chapter to others. Let us share the benefits, “Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge,” we have with others. You and I both have a responsibility to contribute to the continued success of our Chapter. This is why we both should care about finding new participants for our Chapter.

Couple of the Year Bill and Laura

It is May and it is Brain Tumor Awareness Month!!!

April was a great gathering!! I want to thank everyone for their generous donations to the “Fill the Cup Challenge” and for the “give Back” of the 50/50 winnings. We have the best chapter around!!

May is the month of rebirth as the warmth of the earth encourages the flowers and trees to blossom and brings the promise and hope of summer. We can take the energy of this month to fuel our battle to cure this deadly form of cancer through awareness and action. How can YOU help? ▪ Wearing the grey ribbon --- the symbol of brain cancer --- is simple and easy.

▪ Become informed of the facts about pediatric brain cancer so that you can educate others and motivate

them to action. ▪ Talk to Ellie or Laura about attending events to network with other bikers to join GWRRA–Chapter D and

attend the Ride for Kids this August 4, 2019 ▪ Participate in fundraising activities, small and big, to increase your own personal fundraising total.

To encourage everyone to participate in the Ride for Kids, Bill and I are organizing a drawing to all GWRRA-PA-D members who have pre-registered for this year’s event prior to May 20, 2019 under the GW PA D Wingnuts team. Please go to WWW.curethekids.org and select “events”; then “Western PA Ride for Kids”; “Register”; “Join a team”; “GW PA D Wingnuts”; and then “attendee”. Remember you will need a credit card for your $40 registration fee/donation. At the next gathering we will select one person from the team to receive a $40 matching donation which would put you half way to the $150 incentive level to get a hat.

We are also sponsoring May’s color of the month, which will be Grey!! We will have special surprises for all who wear grey to this May’s gathering. Anyone who wears a Ride for Kids t-shirt to the meeting will receive an extra surprise. Let’s all “GO GREY IN MAY” and show our support for the 28,000+children who are living with Brain Cancer. Please show your support and help fight to cure the kids who are busy fighting for the opportunity to just be a kid again. Thank you for the opportunity to represent GWRRA PA-D as your COY at this prestigious event.

PA DISTRICT EDUCATORS Chuck & Evelyn Stone

The time has finally arrived to start the riding season and we have a lot of preparation that needs to be done before we go on that first ride.

As I have mentioned before, we need to start refreshing our riding skills at the start of the

season, and we should also refresh our skills in GROUP RIDING. As you are all aware, we should ride in a staggered position with the leader assuming the left

position and others staggered behind him.

The group leader must watch his speed, because the larger the group, the faster the last bike will have to travel keep up with the group.

The recommended size for a group is five to six bikes. More than six bikes you should break up into two groups with approximately 5 minutes between the groups.

When you arrive to go on a group ride make sure you have a full tank of gas and an empty bladder.

Communications between the leader and the last bike in the group are essential and

conversations by others in the group should be kept to a minimum. If you have persons riding in the group without a radio, they should be placed between two bikes with radios.

When riding in an area with stop lights, stop or yield signs, or heavy traffic, the group may get separated. When this happens, the last bike should communicate with the leader so he can

slow the group down until the separated bikes can catch up, or if necessary find a spot to pull over and wait on the rest of the group.

The last thing to keep in mind is that on all rides we need to be considerate of each other and plan frequent rest stops and/or bathroom stops especially in warm weather when everyone

should be drinking plenty of liquids to keep from becoming dehydrated. We should also plan our meal stops for those who need to eat on a regular basis.

As we look forward to another great season of riding, we should keep the above things in mind

as we plan our rides and everyone will have a great time and enjoy the rides even more.
