Golding’s style develops his social allegory

Summary of Chapter 10    Ralph and Piggy meet up on the beach and they both are overwhelmed with the loss of Simon. Piggy doesn't want to accept that they killed him. Sam and Eric come back as well. Meanwhile Jack is torturing Wilfred and has him tied up. He also has his whole tribe convinced that Simon was the beast and that he can have any disguise. They decide to steal Ralph's fire and go hunting. They get to Ralph's "tribe" and steal piggy's glasses and the fire, they also beat up Ralph and his remaining tribe.

Use of Unique Word Choice

Imagery -"A fist withdrew and came back like a piston, so that the whole shelter exploded into light. Ralph twisted sideways on top of a writhing body and felt hot breath on his cheek. He began to pound the mouth below him, using his clenched fist as a hammer he hit with more and more passionate hysteria as the face became slippery. A knee jerked up between his legs and he fell sideways, busying himself with his pain, and the fight rolled over him.“ (Golding 167)-This image creates a visual picture in the reader's mind of the savagery that has overcome these boys. It develops the allegory by showing how uncivilized they are without their parents.

Tone-"At length, save for an occasional rustle, the shelter was silent." (Golding 165)-This image creates a feeling of calmness and peace. It develops the allegory by showing how even the boys have been through a hectic day, the can still go to bed peacefully. The allegory is that anyone can find peace, no matter how crazy their life is.

Use of Unique Word Choice

Symbol"That was Simon...That was murder." (Golding 158)Simon's death represents that they have lost hope in savalisation. This develops the allegory by showing that the  boys have lost hope with everything that has happened to them.

Connotation

“'What’ll we use for lighting the fire?'The chief’s blush was hidden by the white and red clay. Into his uncertain silence the tribe spilled their murmur once more. “ (Golding 161)This phrase connotes that Jack is not as smart as he thinks he is. His new found authority may be a problem if he cannot figure things out on his own. This develops the allegory showing that he is not ready for this type of responsibility. His type of authority also has very few rules, so with those factors, his clan will go insane and fall apart.

Style of Characterization

    Golding develops charsters through many styles of charaterization. One of the most apperant styles in through dialoge. You see how the boys characters change and develop a little in each conversation that they have with each other. "He came-disguised.He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat." (Golding 160) Previously,Jack was so confident that the beast would leave them alone if the gave him part of their meat. Now, he is more humble and thinks rationally about the matter.

Golding uses dialog to develop characters

-“It was an accident,' Piggy said suddenly. 'that's what it was.' “ (Golding 157)-This dialog shows how upset Ralph and Piggy are over Simon's death and Piggy is trying to show Ralph that they didn't realize it was not the beast.It develops the allegory by showing that accidents sometimes happen, and that Simon's death was unintentional.

Golding uses character action to develop characters- “ He could feel Piggy’shead against his shoulder and the convulsive grip of a hand.' Ralph! Ralph!'“ (Golding 166)

-This action shows that Piggy is scared, He's still a child and needs someone to protect him. It develops the allegory by showing how easily afraid he is in this island. Whereas if they were at home he would've been rational enough to make nothing out of weird noises.

Golding uses direct characterization to develop his characters-"He is going to take us hunting."-This portrays that he is a hunter and that they arent strong enough to go hunting by themselves . It develops the allegory by showing that everybody needs a leader.

Golding uses 3 plot devices to develop his allegory

He uses:• Internal conflict within the boys to show how they are

changing while on the island and how they begin react to each other, themselves, their current problem, environment (etc.) because on the conflict they have inside.

EX: Piggy not being able to admit that they murdered Simon. He's conflicted inside because of the events around him.• External conflict; He uses the environment and the

characters against each other which in turn helps the reader see how severe these conditions are for these boys.

EX: Jack and Ralph are always fighting and as everyone spirals towards insanity jack's behavior towards Ralph just gets worse.• Foreshadowing: Golding gives different hints at their

being rescued. The "Adult world" keeps being so nearly close to them throughout the story.

EX: The boat passing by while they were hunting and the signal fire was out. Also, the plane fight in the sky while they are all asleep.

Internal Conflict

-“'It was an accident,' said Piggy suddenly, 'that’s what it was. An accident.' His voice shrilled again.'Coming in the dark—he hadn’t nobusiness crawling like that out of the dark. He was batty. He asked for it.' He gesticulated widely again. “It was an accident.” (Golding 157) -This shows that Piggy is having a hard time coming to terms with what happened to Simon. Inside himself he cannot accept that Simon was murdered by them.

Foreshadowing

" 'We got to get out of this.''What d'you mean?''Get rescued.' " (Golding 165)

This dialog between Ralph and Piggy foreshadows the end of the story and the probability of the boys getting rescued.

Archetypes

Ralph would be an example of an archetype because he is like a hero/a leader. There are many people in this world that would be considered heros/leaders.Jack is an example of a villian. He always tries to do stuff to Ralph and hurt him.

Style devices such as imagery,connotaion, and denotiation are was to use words to support story development by giving special insight to the story and giving new ways to understand it.

Characterization supports the story by showing how the author's character's develop and who they are which in turn helps you find symbols and archetypes and in the end it also helps you determine the allegory based on the characters .

Plot devices including foreshadowing supports the story by giving you hints of later events or the ending. It also develops the plot by helping the reader infer what will happen.
