HOPEYou’reEnjoyingAHappyNewYear!
We had a fabulous meeting in January — if you were not there, you were missed! State Rep. Dade Phelan (R-21) gave us a legislative update that was very informative. We continue to be so proud of Dade and all he does for Jefferson and Orange Counties. We are truly blessed that he lends his talents to our great communities and state. Speaking of our wonderful state, Dade told us that our population is growing at an extraordinary rate. Many of those who are moving here want to live in a state with no state income tax, less regulation and a population that embraces conservative values. We need to embrace those newcomers and get them involved in the Republican Party. If you meet anyone new to the Golden Triangle, please extend an invitation to be your guest at one of our meetings. I know they will enjoy hearing our speakers and meeting our enthusiastic members.Linda Brown is out running the roads, looking for new members and those who have not yet renewed their membership. Please help Linda save gas and time by mailing your membership renewals in now. We will be
gathering information for our Membership Books soon and we want to see your name included. If you need a membership form emailed to you, let me know and I will send you one.We have been anxiously awaiting the February meeting so we can finally hear Lt. Col. Allen B. West. Several of us heard him speak at the TFRW Convention in October. I promise you, we are all in for a real treat! I hope to see you all on Monday, February 3rd!
Sincerely, Cindy Dishman GTRW President

Bellwether to Blowout: Texas House District Gets Redder to Lead Off 2020 ElectionsBy Bryan Preston January 28, 2020
Texas House District 28's special election offered a first test of the theory that red Texas may be trending blue in the age of Trump. The suburban district west of Houston offered Democrats an opportunity to grab a seat and the narrative just days before the 2020 Iowa caucuses.HD28 is a red district in a county, Fort Bend, that has been trending blue. Hillary Clinton won the county over Donald Trump 51-44 in 2016. Republican incumbent John Zerwas won HD28 +9 in 2018. His decision not to seek another term left it open and the Democrats pulled no punches to try to take it.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren endorsed the Democrat. Former veep Joe Biden did the same. Julian Castro campaigned for the Democrat. Mike Bloomberg bumbled his way into town and apparently knocked on the wrong doors. Beto O'Rourke practically lived in the district for the last few weeks, showing up everywhere giving speeches for the Democratic candidate, Dr. Eliz Markowitz. If one were to go by Twitter, the Dem would win 90-10.The Republican majority in the Texas House is just 9 seats heading into the November general elections. A Dem pickup of HD28 would narrow the number of pickups they need to take a majority and give them momentum for the general election when this seat and all others in the Texas House are on the ballot. They could make the case that Texas is starting to list to the left. That was their opening and closing argument.
But after early voting, Republican Gary Gates sprinted to the lead going away, 59% to 41% over the Democrat. The lead was sur- prisingly strong and held up as the count wore on. He
finished the night winning 58% to 42%, with 30,000 votes cast — a new record for a Texas House special election by about 9,000 votes. To be sure, both parties knew the stakes. In addition to
the big-name endorsements, Democrat
groups and PACs poured money in by the hundreds of thousands. Numerous Republicans, including Gov. Greg Abbott, endorsed Gates and supplied air support and support on the ground. Texas Republicans from the state party to the streets of the district took this race very, very seriously. Partisans on both sides knocked on thousands upon thousands of doors. Gates overcame an enormous Democrat effort to poach the seat and begin their case for turning Texas blue.
Instead, the district became deeper red by a wider margin than it was just under two years
ago, and wider than anyone expected. It's gone from a tied bellwether, as the Democrats were promising just days ago, to a blowout. Beto has suffered a beatdown and is a bust. None of the Democrats vying for the White House have any sort of coattails in this Texas district.
If HD28 is a harbinger for November, the Republicans have a lot to look forward to — and the Democrats will remain on the fringes of power in the Lone Star State.
Rice University's Mark Jones [Opinion Contributor to The Hill] was among the first to call it, just after the early voting totals emerged.
Aaron De Leon, political director of Associated Republicans of Texans, put the victory into context for PJ Media: ”Texans have been heard loud and clear," he said in a written statement. "We will not allow dozens of radical progressive PACs, run by Democrat elites and failed Democrat presidential contenders, to buy our state legislature."
The 2020 elections have begun. AND THIS IS THE EFFORT THAT IS REQUIRED!

In 2018, Dr. Elizabeth Markowitz (educator/corporate trainer) ran for State Board of Education District 7, losing to Matt Robinson, M.D. (R-Friendswood, TX). FOR THIS TEXAS STATE REP. DISTRICT 28 Special Election, 52% of Markowitz’s approx. $900,000 CAMPAIGN FUNDING CAME FROM OUTSIDE TEXAS!!!https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/480196-can-democrats-flip-the-texas-house-todays-results-will-provide-a-clue

Tucker Carlson TonightNovember 12, 2019
TUCKER CARLSON: Good evening and welcome to Tucker Carlson Tonight.
It’s hard to think of an ideal more American than the Freedom of Speech. Where people say, “Our soldiers fight and die for ‘our values’,” what they mean is ‘our freedom to say what we think is true.’ That’s our birthright. It’s the most important thing we have — that we’ve ever had. And, so, for generations there was bipartisan consensus about this. In fact, the Liberals were among the most stalwert defenders of the First Amendment — and good for them.
But then the Left took control of this country’s institutions. Liberals became the Establishment they had once opposed. And suddenly Free Speech seemed like a challenge to the highly profitable existing order — the one they were getting so rich from. So, our schools began to teach our children that “Freedom of Speech is a threat — in fact, it’s immoral.” And, over time, the kids started to believe it. Why wouldn’t they? At this point, nearly 60% of young people believe we should change the First Amendment to ban speech that they don’t like.
Now, changing amendments is hard. Two-thirds of Congress would have to approve a change like that. But on campuses, many students aren’t waiting for Congress to act. They’ve decided to impose censorship right now. Watch, for example, kids at the purportedly impressive Northwestern University try to ban Jeff Sessions from speaking out loud: (Video of crowd chanting same phrase repeatedly:) “No justice. No peace. Abolish I-C-E!”
(Video of students banging on doors): “Booooooooooo!”
TUCKER CARLSON: Yeah, that’s Northwestern. It’s funny, you know, if you’re a middle-aged parent and you’re at dinner parties with other middle-aged parents and they’re talking about — bragging, really — about what schools their kids go to: “Well, you know, he got into . . . Cody once got into Northwestern; it’s really the Harvard of the Middle West.” And you think, yeah, it’s probably pretty impressive, right?
No, that’s actually what it looks like. It’s not impressive at all. It’s pathetic. Northwestern, by the way, is home to what they claim is a prestigious Journalism School.
And yet the student newspaper there apologized for daring to cover the Jeff Sessions event. The newspaper did! Quote: “Nothing is more important than ensuring that our fellow students feel safe,“ the editors later explained, as if reporting was somehow a threat to student safety.
Meanwhile, over at Harvard, the Student Government Association on
campus — which, not incidentally, is the single most overrated collection of people on planet earth — passed a statement condemning the student newspaper on campus because, listen to this: It had dared ask the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, ICE, to comment on a story. They didn’t endorse ICE; someone just called up and said, “Hey, ICE, can we get a comment?” Now, ICE didn’t respond, didn’t provide a comment, but it didn’t matter.
More than 650 students at Harvard signed a petition condemning the paper for contacting ICE. The young Democrats at Harvard’s campus issued a statement claiming the paper had — we’re quoting now — “deliberately chosen to put our
students in jeopardy.” One campus activist group is now urging a boycott of the newspaper because calling ICE was just that scary! It’s pretty funny. On the other hand, it’s really kind of
ominous. Because our meritocracy is essentially fraudulent, and our system is completely rigged for the benefit of a few. A lot of the shallow, neurotic narcissists that we’re making fun of tonight will, in the end, wind up running this country. Those people writhing on the floor about how they’re so threatened? Yeah, they’re going to be in charge. They shouldn’t be, but because the system is rigged, they will be. They’ll be making the decisions that affect your life and the lives of your children and grandchildren. And these are the people who literally couldn’t care less about the First Amendment or any amendment or, in fact, any document that might limit their power in any way. They consider themselves gods. And they’d like you to shut up and obey, and they’ll use force if they have to. So, what kind of place will America be when those people take over? Jason Hill has thought about this. He’s a professor at DePaul University. He’s the author of
the fantastic book, We Have Overcome, and he joins us tonight. Professor, thanks so much for coming on.
JASON HILL: Thank you for having me.TUCKER CARLSON: So, when you see a tape like that or maybe on your own campus you — you’ve seen reactions like the . . . (Cont’d. on Page 17)

(Cont’d. from Page 16) TUCKER CARLSON: . . . ones on display this week at Northwestern or Harvard, what does it make you think about our future here?
JASON HILL: Well, our late, great President said that “The philosophy of the classroom today will be the government of tomorrow.” [paraphrased]
TUCKER CARLSON: That’s right.
JASON HILL: Abraham Lincoln. And it makes me think that we are going to see a kind of totaliti— bloated totalitarian government, a socialist government. I want to say a few things. You know, what we’re witnessing on these campuses is really something that is very nefarious. We are witnessing the criminalization of facts, of objectivity, of truth, of impartiality and of fairness. And I have been saying on your show — and I know that you have endorsed this view — that our universities have become national security threats —
TUCKER CARLSON: Yes.
JASON HILL: — because they are the domains, they are the incubators in which the criminalization of truth and objectivity is taking place. And why are they national security threats? They’re national security threats because they assault the Constitution, because they assault the unassailable principles that secure our unalienable rights. And this deference to — this cult of deference to children — ‘cause these are children who do not want to have the courage of their convictions. They want to protest, but they want to be protected. And we live in a culture, Tucker, where we — I call it “the cult of deference to children,” where we defer to children — that we say you can take the boundaries by day, but you can protect the borders at night when your safety — when you feel your safety is protected. And I think —
TUCKER CARLSON: So, I wonder how — you described what’s happening at campuses — and I’ll just repeat it again for those who missed it — as a national security threat, as an actual threat to this nation and its future. In the world that I live in here in Washington, the debates are about how many more H1B visas we ought to issue, what marginal tax rates ought to be. It’s like it’s not even happening. Why do you think the people in charge don’t even acknowledge what’s happening on campuses?
JASON HILL: You mean the university administrators?
TUCKER CARLSON: No, I mean the people in charge of our country – in Washington, D.C. Neither party — I mean, you’re pointing out that what happens — you’re quoting Lincoln to say the attitudes on campus will be the dominant attitudes of our ruling class in this coming generation, so this really matters. And nobody in D.C., in either party, seems even aware of what’s happening. They don’t seem to care.
JASON HILL: Well, I can speak just from a little bit of experience. I did some lobbying on Capitol Hill this summer. I had the privilege — for a particular think tank— and I had the privilege of meeting some — both Democrat and Republican Congressmen and their staffers. And I was shocked, Tucker, at the degree of ignorance —TUCKER CARLSON: Yes.
JASON HILL: — that was displayed. These individuals in our Government have no idea of what’s going on on college campuses.
TUCKER CARLSON: Yes.
JASON HILL: When I told them, for example, what I had experienced on my own campus for defending Israel, they were shocked. And it’s a sort of bifurcated world, the world of Congress and the world — or the world of our Government and this kind of Stalinist totalitarian oppressive system in our universities, these bastions of Anti-Free Speech that is the norm in the educational system that is taking place. And the two worlds are not in communication or don’t even —
TUCKER CARLSON: No.
JASON HILL: No, they’re not.TUCKER CARLSON: No, and you’re –- I can promise you that your average, upper income parent sees college purely as a bestower of prestige. “My kid goes to Williams or Middlebury. Isn’t that impressive?” And there’s no sense of what’s actually happening on the campuses which is: They’re destroying our kids and they’re bankrupting the country.
JASON HILL: And you know what I think, Tucker, too: I think that parents have a sort of naïve trust in these institutions.
TUCKER CARLSON: Yeah, that’s for sure.
JASON HILL: A lot of them are very concerned with the grades of their students and in good faith have entrusted their children to the professoriate and the administrative bodies who run these universities —
TUCKER CARLSON: Exactly.
JASON HILL: — and do not realize how corrupt — what a corrupting influence the professoriate has exercised over their —
TUCKER CARLSON: Exactly
JASON HILL: So, parents need to become more involved in their children’s — in their students’ lives, in their children’s lives.
TUCKER CARLSON: If I had a billion dollar foundation, I would get you out of that school and just send you on the road to meet every potential parent of a college-aged kid to tell them that, because I think that message more than any other needs to get out. Professor Hill, thank you so much.
JASON HILL: Thank you for having me.

Ronald Reagan on THE NATIONAL AGENDA
Let us all remember, ideas do matter. We didn’t come to Washington to be caretakers of power. We weren’t elected to become managers of decline or just to see if we couldn’t run the same old shop and maybe do it a little more efficiently. We were sent here to move America forward again by putting people back in charge of their own country, to promote growth . . . to give individuals the opportunities to reach for their dreams, to strengthen institutions of family, school, church, and community, to make the United States a stronger leader for peace, freedom, and progress abroad, and through it all, to renew our faith in the God who has blessed our land.
Reagan Administration Executive Forum January 20, 1983
When new management takes over a failing business or a coach tries to revitalize a sports team, both will frequently find that the key to success is cutting out the extraneous or extravagant, while returning to basics and emphasizing those resources that have been traditionally successful. Well, this is precisely what we’re trying to do to the bloated Federal Government today.
Dinner for the John M. Ashbrook Memorial Ashland, Ohio
May 9,1983
This must be an agenda that opens the gates of freedom so all people can go as far as their God-given talents will take them. For every legal and economic action we consider, I ask: Will this serve to liberate and empower the individual; will it encourage us to reach for the stars, or will it weaken us and drag us down into submission and dependence?
