Citation preview
Construction started: 1933 Total length: 8,980 feet (2,737 m)
Height: 746 feet (227 m) Address: San Francisco, CA 94129
Architects: Joseph Strauss, Charles Alton Ellis, Irving Morrow
Location: San Francisco, Marin County
Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay.
Ferry service began as early as 1820, with regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for purposes of transporting water to San Francisco
Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats.
Construction begin January 5, 1933
Construction end April 19, 1937
Opened May 27, 1937; 75 years ago
11 men died during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Until February 17, 1937, only man had died, setting a new all-time record for construction projects. However, sadly on February 17, 10 men lost their lives when a section of scaffold carrying twelve men fell through the safety net.
The names of all 11 men killed during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge are:
Kermit Moore, O.A. Anderson; Chris Anderson; William Bass; O. Desper; Fred Dümmatzen; Terence Hallinan; Eldridge Hillen; Charles Lindros; Jack Norman; and Louis Russell.
At a cost of 35 million
They made San Francisco Peninsula to connect with Marin County
In my research I didn’t find any structural issues
The last of the construction bonds were retired in 1971, with $35 million in principal and nearly $39 million in interest raised entirely from bridge tolls
Toll Cars (southbound only)
$6.00 (cash), $5.00 (FasTrak), $3.00 (carpools during peak hours, FasTrak only)
Daily traffic 120,000
