President’s Message

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I sincerely hope everyone will be able to take some time out of the office and enjoy the holidays with family. Hopefully we get some winter weather to accompany the holiday season. Earlier this month ASHRAE Houston kicked off the holiday celebrations with Donor Recognition Night. Thanks again to all of our ASHRAE Research contributors that give so generously. The Houston Chapter is recognized

every year as being one of the most charitable chapters within the entire organization. We have been in the top three for four years in a row. Let’s keep it up! Let us also recognize the Texas A&M Senior Design team that spent the semester working on an ASHRAE sponsored design. The students were Jack Reid, Ellen Geis, Jacob Friedrich, Tyler Rice and Santiago Becerra. Four ASHRAE Houston members (Steve Redding, Bill Chalmers, Dan Travis and June Johnston) drove to College Station on December 3 to observe the design and final presentation. Thank you to Steve Redding and June Johnston for assisting the students throughout the semester with questions and design input.

And, of course, congratulations to the design team for their outstanding work! Past President’s Night is right around the corner! This next meeting will be on the evening of January 14. Please note: it’s an evening meeting and it’s on the second Wednesday of the month, so that it does not conflict with ASHRAE Winter Meeting travel. We will have a member of the Houston Super Bowl (no, I did not get expressed/written consent of the NFL to use that term) Committee sharing with us everything that is going into our preparation for hosting The Big Game next year. Amongst everything else I wanted to remind all of you that the PAST PRESIDENT’s NIGHT is coming up right around the corner. It will be here before you know it too. This year we have a little schedule change and so I wanted to make all of you aware of it in advance. It will be an evening meeting on Wednesday, January 14th. Last Month’s Meeting

Hello everyone. Our presenter last month was great. You really missed out if you didn’t make it. He is an ASHRAE Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer. He is a very down to earth person so his presentations are always very informative and well as entertaining. Be sure to invite a guest and a colleague to join you. Submitted By Mike Langton TOPIC: You Can’t Afford Discomfort with DAN INT-HOUT III, Chief Engineer Krueger While much has been said about saving energy, little is said of the downside if the savings strategy reduces occupant productivity. The average salary in any

office is 100 times greater than the full cost of heating and cooling that space. Strategies that add to the first, renovation, or operating cost of a space have to be weighed against the potential for reduced productivity when calculating the time to payback. We aren’t doing a very good job, it seems. BOMA continues to report that the #1 reason for tenants not renewing the lease is “occupant dissatisfaction with the thermal environment”. ASHRAE Standard 55 describes the conditions that will satisfy a majority of the occupants. It is often referenced in code, and many LEED projects have been awarded a point for compliance, at the design stage, of course. In practice however, we find that systems don’t operate at design, or even as designed. We will discuss the issues related to maintaining comfortable conditions.at all loads, and discuss the benefits of ventilation and economizer operations. Biography of DAN INT-HOUT III Dan is responsible for the presentation of technical data and advanced application engineering for the Grilles, Registers and Diffusers, as well as the VAV air terminals, fan coils and chilled beams produced by Krueger. Dan has been in the Air Distribution research and design business since 1973, and has a Masters in Business Management from Central Michigan Univ., and a Bachelor in Biology & Physics from Denison University. Dan has held several positions in the industry, including Owens Corning Fiberglas, Carrier, Titus Environmental Technologies and Krueger, in engineering, marketing and product research roles. Dan has written a number of technical papers and articles on VAV system performance, acoustics, air diffusion, controls and occupant comfort. He was recently Chairman of both ASHRAE Technical and Standards Committees on Thermal Comfort, is a past Chairman of several other related ASHRAE Technical and Standards Committees, as well as ASHRAE Standards, Technical Activities Committee (TAC) & Environmental Health Committees. Dan joined the ASHRAE Technical Activities Committee again in June 2012. He received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award in 1993 and the Exceptional Service award in 2007 Dan is currently the Chairman of the AHRI committee on Applied Acoustics (885) and a past member of ISO 205 US Panel on Thermal Comfort. Dan is also a past member of the USGBC TAG on the Indoor Environment. Dan was elevated to the grade of ASHRAE Fellow at the Long Beach meeting in 2007, and the ASHRAE Board of Directors in 2014.

Student Activities

Submitted By June Johnston Student Activities Chair

On behalf of ASHRAE - Houston Chapter, I would like to thank and congratulate ALL of you for your participation and hard work in the 2014 ASHRAE Student Design Program at Texas A&M University. This past September the students decided on the HVAC Design Calculations category and have since worked together under the mentorship of Mr. Stephen Redding. This project will help to ensure that the students graduate with the engineering design skills that are vital to their future effectiveness as practicing engineer. The presentation took place, December 3rd 2014, in Lecture Hall 1 of the Engineering Innovation Center (EIC) on A&M's campus from 5-6pm. Steve Redding, Bill Chalmers, Dan Travis and I drove to Texas A&M College Station to meet with the Senior Design Team and see their HVAC Design Calculations presentation. Wow, let me just say on behalf of the Houston group that attended, these students did an OUTSTANDING job!!! We were all very impressed, not only by the hard work they have put into this project but how well they did with the actual presentation. They were very well spoken and each of them took a turn presenting sections of the presentation. They were engaged with their audience and quick on their feet when asked questions as to why they did things a certain way. They talked about the challenges they have had during this process, mostly that none of them have worked with HVAC design prior to this. Congratulations to the Senior Design Team: Jack Reid, Ellen Geis, Jacob Friedrich, Tyler Rice and Santiago Becerra. Editor Walik Note: the Semester Report and PowerPoint Presentation will be posted on the website soon.

Young Engineers in ASHRAE

The Young Engineers of ASHRAE has become a very successful group over the past few years for the Houston Chapter. The YEA group was formed to enhance member benefits for young professional ASHRAE members by giving them the opportunity to expand their knowledge about the industry, as well as socialize and network with other young professionals. Once a month, the members of YEA meet for lunch or happy hour. During these meetings members are able to talk with their fellow young professionals, meet new young professionals in the industry, as well as discuss the current happenings in the industry. These meetings are a great way for members to learn as well as teach others what they have learned about the industry. YEA also offers a few larger events each year. Lunch-and-learn events happen a few times a year in which different companies lecture and give tours of their facility and products, providing a better hands-on understanding. YEA is always welcoming new young professionals in the HVAC industry to participate. If you or anyone you know may be interested in getting involved, please contact Mitchell Campbell at 713-782-2701 or [email protected] Mitchell Campbell / Alex Roessler Young Engineers in ASHRAE Chair
