CSI VB looks to defend national championship with new faces
The goal doesn’t change. The tradition echoes through the CSI Gymnasium walls. The expectation to win car-ries over year after year. It’s the faces that change each season. And that constant has not changed the focus for the 2013 CSI volleyball team.
If anything it has made them more driven to uphold the legacy left for them. Braiden Johnston is the one re-maining player from last season’s NJCAA National Championship team. Red-shirt freshmen Alexandria John-son and Alyssa Povey understand what it takes because they were a part of that team in all daily activities last year.
For the 13 new players, the 10 championship banners speak loudly. And there is no one better to lead them than head coach Heidi Cartisser. The Golden Eagle head coach has
won two national championships in the last four years. While very young, she thinks this year’s group has the talent to contend again.
“We are a very athletic and physical team and have depth in every position,” Cartisser said. “As soon as we get everyone on the same page, understanding what CSI volley-ball is all about, we will be a dominate team that will compete nationally.”
Johnston will anchor the defense for the Golden Eagles. Other CSI players that can step in and contribute in the back row include Heather Getman (Florida) and Peka Kalulu-Sugai (Hawaii).
Kalulu-Sugai is multi-dimensional and will give Cartisser options as she can play left side, right side and back row.
Joining her on the outside or right side will be Jaidyn Blanchfield (Boise), Natasa Savovic (Serbia), Jordan Burgon (Utah), Pati Anae (Hawaii), Stephanie Perez (Puerto Rico) and Johnson (Nevada).
In the middle, the Golden Eagles will look to Povey (Clifton, Idaho), freshmen Jessi Seumalo (Oregon) and Jasmine Branch (Je-rome) as well as sophomore transfer Mer-cedes Vaughn (Penn.), who came to CSI from the University of Tennessee.
Setting for CSI will be freshmen Puamana Danielson (Hawaii), Katarina Kojic (Serbia) and Jamie Selleneit (Utah).
“We have a lot of new faces and early in the season we will struggle with consistency,”
5
Cartisser said. “To be successful we will need this group to mature quickly. It will be fun to watch them grow and de-velop.”
As always, Region 18 will be one of the toughest leagues in the country. In 2009, the Golden Eagles placed third in regular season standings and then won the Region 18 Tour-nament and the National Championship. Last season, the Eagles won the league, won the tournament and then won the national championship. Region 18 has been rewarded the last few years with two berths to nationals because of how strong the league is.
“Once again our region will be very competitive. It will be one of the best regions in the nation, which I am excited for because it is great preparation for the region tournament and hopefully nationals,” Cartisser said. “I love the fact that our young team will be challenged day in and day out.”
2013 Outlook
6
Heidi Cartisser joined the College of Southern Idaho as the head coach in fall of 2006.
She led the Golden Eagles to their 9th NJCAA National Champi-onship in 2009 and their 10th last season. It was her fourth trip to the national tournament. In her seven years at CSI, Cartisser has compiled a 210-63 record.
The former Golden Eagle, who played at CSI from 1991-1993, graduated from Albertson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995.
Her coaching career began at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Ore. Cartisser coached the Chukars from 1995-2000. At that time, TVCC was a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. In 1997, Car-tisser led TVCC to the regional playoffs for the first time in 19 years.
After coaching at Treasure Valley, Cartisser took the head coaching job at Chicago State University. CSU competes in the Western Athletic Conference. In her first year at Chicago State, the team won more matches than the previous seven years combined and won its first conference match in school history. In her second sea-

son, the team improved statistically in almost every category and won more conference matches than the previ-ous year.
In 2003, Chicago State finished fourth in the conference, posting the highest conference finish ever in school history. In her last season there, CSU finished with the most wins ever by the Division I school.
Cartisser moved back to the Magic Valley area in the spring of 2005 with her family. Her husband Jim assisted at the College of Southern Idaho in the fall of 2005, helping the Golden Eagles to their eighth national championship and rejoined the Eagles in 2012 season to assist Heidi.
Cartisser and her husband Jim have five children - Cody, Canyon, Cason, Cailey and Carli.

Jim Cartisser enters his third season with the College of Southern Idaho volleyball program, the last two under head coach Heidi Cartisser, helping the Golden Eagles to their 10th national championship.
Jim was also an assistant in 2005, when CSI won its eighth national championship. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Chicago State University for five years.
He has served as director of Club Canyon, a local volleyball club for the past seven years.
“We are lucky to have Jim on the staff,” said CSI Athletic Director Joel Bate. “Jim brings a wealth of experience to the program as an assistant coach and has dedicated himself to helping younger student athletes better themselves in the fundamentals of the game. He is a great teacher and his recruiting talents are amazing.”
“It’s exciting to have Jim on the floor full time. He does a tremendous job re-cruiting, knowing how to find and evaluate great talent. His expertise with the
technical game is of great value to CSI.” - -Heidi Cartisser

Babes brings playing experience and an enthusiasm for the game of volleyball to the court. A family affair, Babes follows in the footsteps of her sister All-American Aneli Cubi-Otineru who played for CSI in 2005 and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a national championship. An-other sister, Kawena Cubi-Otineru played for CSI in 2006, the first year Kalulu assisted for the Golden Eagles.
She began her volleyball career, playing club ball for the Kame-hameha club team in Hawaii in seventh grade. She continued to compete for that team for five years. A standout at University of Hawaii Lab High School, Babes led them to four state championships. In 1986, Babes competed on the 16U Junior National team, earning all-tournament honors.
Babes played one year at the University of Hawaii, ranking sixth all time since 1985 in service aces per game. In 65 games, she recorded 26 aces. Kalulu has four children - Darren, Daylen, Darian and Del. Darian “Lepeka” joined the CSI volleyball team this fall as a freshman.
“Babes is the type of person that will do anything you ask her to do and then some. She understands the game of volleyball so
well and is always willing to help wher-ever needed. Babes teaches players how
to be intense and focused while taking the love of the game to another level.”

After five years of coaching at the high school level, Keri Coats takes a step up to volunteer assist for the Golden Eagles. Coats is the former head volleyball coach for Meridian High School in Meridian, Idaho, where she was selected as the 5A SIC Coach of the Year for the 2011 season. Coats has also been coaching club volleyball for the past eight years, including stints at Boise River Volleyball Club and Sooner Vol-leyball Club. She has assisted the College of Southern Idaho with several summer volleyball camps over the last few years as well.
Joining up with CSI this season brings Coats back to her hometown. Being a Twin Falls High School graduate meant that CSI was basically in her backyard. She signed on to play volleyball for the Golden Eagles for the 2001 and 2002 seasons, where her teams finished fifth and third at the national tournament. After CSI, Coats transferred to the University of Oklahoma. She competed for the Sooners during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, her senior year being coached by current head coach Santiago
Restrepo. Coats is a certified personal trainer. She runs boot camp fitness classes and youth volleyball training.

Following careers in the legal profession and banking, Eaton became the Executive Director of the CSI Foundation in 2001. Since then, he has served also as CSI Vice President of Student Services, Strategic Planning and Grants Development. In 2012, Eaton became a part-time employee as an Advisor to the President.
When President Jerry Beck retired in the summer of 2013, Eaton was hired as the college’s Interim President while CSI began to conduct a search for the school’s fourth president.
“As the community’s college, CSI is south central Idaho’s epicenter of great instruction and exciting activities,” Eaton said.
Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.
Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.
Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes.
Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986.
Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
