Thanks to everyone involved on Charity DayWE were again blessed with good weather on the day of the Captain’s Charity Shield, held on Friday, August 23rd.It was possibly too hot to play golf at times, but it was still a pleasure to play on a course in top condition. In the evening, Aaron James (Comedian, Host, Sporting Impressionist and Auctioneer) took charge as MC. He was very funny and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The pairs competition was won by Diane and Dennis Dickinson, while the Ladies Vice Captain’s team of Jenny Wilkinson, Becky MacLaren, Mary MacLaren, Sheena Markham, Carol Gibbs, Liz Waine, Ruth Bowe and Kate Nolan won the Team event. The raffle and auctions were well supported, so thanks to Dave Hawkins, Roy Pouncey, Chris Reading and everyone who helped.Thank you to Richard Munns and the three ladies - Pat Wilson, Pauline Kendall and Val Cooke - for helping with registration and scoring.Thank you to all the ladies and gents who brought in raffle items and to Mary MacLaren for arranging an auction with a chance for three people to play golf with our top Tour professional Meghan MacLaren. On the subject of pros, Tiger Adams did well recently and I hope he now has the chance to raise his profile and awareness with the members regarding his imminent participation in European Tour Q School. We held a series of important junior events this month, including the Club Championships, and Ryder Cup (a selection of young players pictured below) and Solheim Cup matches. Our Junior Open, which is part of the County Junior Order of Merit, went very well and my commendation to all the Juniors who finished despite the tropical rain. We managed to salvage some very wet and torn scorecards! In team matches, the Handicap League side have reached the semi-finals, while the Men’s Intermediate League team are still in with a good chance of reaching the last four. More details are in this magazine. Please enjoy your golf and be lucky - stay away from the Captain’s Bunker and Out of Bounds on the 18th Hole.2019 Club Captain, George Khaw

THEO Brown was crowned 2019 Wellingborough Junior champion after beating Sam Underwood by six shots with a round of 77.The three-handicapper (pictured left, representing the County Boys team this summer) birdied the sixth and 11th holes and had nothing worse than a five on his scorecard as he held off the challenge of Underwood, who posted two birdies and no dropped shots in his last five holes.James Brazier also produced a superb finish to take the net plaudits by four from Brown and Jack Meakin as the 15-handicapper carded gross pars on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes in a round of net 70.

A field of 50 boys and girls took part in the Junior Open the previous day as young golfers from across the county tested their skills on the 18-hole Harrowden Hall layout.Chelsey Sharp led the scoring with a net 69 as she finished four strokes ahead of Kettering club-mate Ben Atherton. TIGER Adams is looking to build on the best form of his life as he prepares to join the professional ranks by competing in the European Tour Qualifying School this month. The Wellingborough Scratch Team member will start his pursuit of a Tour card over

four rounds in the opening stage at Stoke By Nayland GC from September 17th.iiThe 20-year-old already has one TP Tour event booked into his diary for

iiDecember after qualifying for The Gosling Invitational in Bermuda by igrabbing third in a regional event with a three-under-par 68 at Chigwell GC.

Adams (pictured) continued his brilliant scoring in the Midlands Golf Union County Cup two days later as he fired scores of 69 and 68 at

Northants County GC to finish joint-top with Richard Wale (Leicestershire).....The duo were forced to share the prize after a remarkable sudden death play-

off was halted in the darkness as they couldn’t be separated after eight holes.Club professional Ryan Evans, meanwhile, enjoyed his best result of the year on the European Tour in the Scandinavian Invitational as he

finished tied 29th at Hills GC, Gothenburg. Evans, who finished 18th in a Challenge Tour event in Denmark a couple of weeks earlier, carded 71, 68 and 69, before shooting a

brilliant bogey-free seven-under-par closing round of 63.Meghan MacLaren came up just short in her bid to earn a place in the European Solheim Cup team after she missed the cut in the last three LET qualifying events, and then didn’t receive a wildcard Captain’s pick.

All teams continue to battle for victories

NGL Scratch LeagueStaverton Park 4½Wellingborough 3½

WELLINGBOROUGH’s men saw their efforts to grab something from this trip to the Scratch League pacesetters unrewarded. An away success looked on the cards at the half way stage after Chris Billson took the opening tie on the closing hole, Theo Brown recorded a 2&1 victory in the next game, before Adam Sherlock (pictured) added another point on the 18th.Staverton, who beat 2018 champions Northants County at home in their opening fixture and have since defeated Northampton and Peterborough Milton at home, wasted no time in fighting back as they took the next four points.Wellingborough still had a chance of snatching a draw, but Tiger Adams had to settle for a half in the last match against Andrew Swain.

WELLINGBOROUGH have enjoyed a proud record in NGL team competitions in recent years as the men, ladies and seniors have claimed the plaudits in county league tournaments. With the 2019 campaign approaching it’s conclusion, this is how our teams are getting on this season.

NGL Intermediate LeagueWellingborough 4Overstone 4 at Kingsthorpe GC

A FLUCTUATING contest against an Overstone team, who had won their previous three matches, ended in stalemate after Wellingborough avoided defeat in the last three ties.Despite losing the opening tie, Wellingborough responded with points from Martin Lloyd (2&1) and Paul Hughes (4&3), only for Overstone to reply with a couple of convincing victories. With the final three ties reaching the 18th, Neil Redding and Gary Grimmitt collected halves, while Mike Gilbrook grabbed a narrow win.

Wellingborough 3½Collingtree 4½ at Kettering GC

EARLY points from Christopher Ludwig and Paul Hughes (both 3&2) had Wellingborough in a decent position.

But defeats in games two, four, five and six meant the best the side could hope for was a draw.Although Tim Veal maintained those ambitions with a 3&2 victory, Mike Gilbrook had to be content with a half in the other match.

Wellingborough 5½Kettering 2½ at Northampton GC

THE search for a first victory ended at the fourth time of asking this year as the team produced their most complete performance of the campaign.A half from Andrew Grimmitt and wins from Paul Redding (5&4) and Paul Hughes (3&1) gave Wellingborough the early impetus.Even though Kettering replied twice, Duncan Cornish, Gary Grimmitt and Dominic Holden all recorded 2&1 wins to claim the team victory.A win against Kingsthorpe in the final match will now guarantee a last four spot, although a draw could still be enough.

Getting ready for Semi-finalsNGL Handicap League

Wellingborough 23Priors Hall 0

WELLINGBOROUGH confirmed their place in the semi-finals as Group A winners after securing their seventh victory in seven outings this season.Neil Redding and Paul Redding (four holes), Tom Marshall and Dave Wright, pictured (two holes), David Simpson and Loz Weekes (four holes) and Steve Coles and Ashley Connolly (two holes) put the hosts in a dominant position.David Hawkins and Carl Martin rammed home the advantage with an eight-hole win, before Colin Barnes and John Carter completed the whitewash of the Corby club with a three-hole success.

Kettering 10Wellingborough 4

A PERFECT qualifying campaign proved just beyond the Handicap League team as the runaway Group A leaders came unstuck at Kettering. With a semi-final spot already confirmed, Wellingborough made a slow start as they lost both the first and third games by a margin of five holes. The team responded with wins from Tom Houghton and David Simpson (one hole), Carl Martin and Colin Barnes (one hole) and John Carter and Ciaran Eeles (two holes) but a half in the other tie meant they finished just shy of a fourth away victory.Wellingborough will play Farthingstone in the semi-finals on September 22nd at a neutral venue. The other last four tie sees Hellidon Lakes, who Wellingborough beat in the final in 2014, take on Cold Ashby or Collingtree Park.

NGL Ladies Cecil Leitch quarter-finalWellingborough 0Oundle 7 at Delapre Park GC

MIRIAM Johnson’s Ladybirds saw their run in the Cecil Leitch come to an end in the last eight as reigning champions Oundle proved too strong. After a brilliant qualifying campaign which saw Wellingborough top Group C with three wins and just one loss, the team’s hopes of a semi-final spot were dashed almost before they had begun as Oundle took the opening two ties with holes to spare. The pattern continued as the Group D runners-up clinched the overall match with two more comfortable wins, before extending the lead further with another 4&3 success in game five.Bina Shah and Gill Rivers both took their matches to the 18th hole, but were unable to grab a consolation point for Wellingborough.

Johnson, who is now handing on the Captaincy to Rivers said: “I’ve had a great time and really enjoyed all the fun and laughs we’ve had along the way, both when successful and when we lost.“What a great bunch we are at Wellingborough and I am so glad I moved up here.”

Ladybirds - plenty to smile about, despite defeat

NGL Junior League - Group D

Wellingborough 0Northants County B 4

THE team’s battling qualities were not rewarded with any positive results in their first home match of the season against the Group D leaders.Although Michael Hinds suffered a big defeat, Theo Brown and Olivia Barby both took their matches to the 17th hole before losing. After picking up a point in the reverse fixture last month, Jack Meakin was unable to grab a double as he shook hands with his Northants County opponent on the 16th.

Collingtree Park 4Wellingborough 0

AN away clash with a much older and more experienced Collingtree Park outfit proved too much for Wellingborough’s youngsters as the team lost all four games with holes to spare.Olivia Barby came closest to taking something from her match before eventually going down 2&1 in the final tie.The team have one more opportunity to secure a victory this year as they host Collingtree on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Seniors Friendlies

Wellingborough 5Buckingham 3

THE strong middle order proved vital in the last home match in July as the seniors team

overcame losing the opening two ties to record

a good win. Peter Davies and

Richard Greenbank, pictured, (5&4), Bob Lewis and Steve

Maycock (6&5) and Lou Everard and Peter Hooton (4&2) pushed Wellingborough ahead, David Birkett and Martin Cooke won the 18th to make it 4-2, before John Arnott and Richard Briggs wrapped up the victory by taking the final game 3&2.

The Bedfordshire 5½Wellingborough 2½

WELLINGBOROUGH were made to pay for another slow start as they couldn’t recover from losing the opening three ties at Bedfordshire.Wins from Andrew Charter and Peter Davies (2&1) and Steve Maycock and David Birkett (4&3), and a half from Peter Hooton and Graham Bayes, got the visitors within touching distance of a superb comeback success. But the hosts held out as they took the final two points on the 18th hole.

Wellingborough 3Northampton 3

THE first match in August brought a change in the pattern of results for the seniors as they grabbed a draw thanks to wins at the top and tail end of the line-up.Captain Peter Gannon and John Briggs got the team going with a 3&2 victory in the opening match, before Chris Dickens and Huw Rees doubled the lead with a 4&3 success in game two.Although the visitors won the next two matches on the 18th hole and then went ahead by clinching game five, Wellingborough grabbed a share of the spoils as David Rawson and Richard Briggs came good in the final tie.

Overstone 3½Wellingborough 4½

WINS in the opening four games helped secure a third away victory of the season.Peter Gannon and Martin Evans (4&3), Edward Roderick and Bob Lewis (2&1) and Ray Walker and Graham Bayes (4&2) set the tone, before Andrew Charter and Peter Davies took the 18th hole to guarantee the team at least a draw.Overstone fought back in games five, six and eight, but Wellingborough crossed the winning line

with a half from Nick Palmer and Peter Hooton in the remaining match.
