Inspired Ruben Toledo

Born in Havana, Cuba, Ruben Toledo is a surrealist painter, sculptor, illustrator, fashion chronicler and critic. He has designed mannequins, store windows, award statuettes, backdrops for fashion shoots, scarves, fabrics, dishes and carpets. His collaboration with his fashion designer wife, Isabel Toledo, was the subject of both a book and a museum exhibition titled Toledo/Toledo: A Marriage of Art and Fashion at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Penguin BooksIn celebration of Penguin Books’ 75th anniversary, Toledo designed a series of illustrated book covers for Penguin Deluxe Classics such as Wuthering Heights, The Scarlet Letter, and Jane Eyre.

Louis Vuitton

Since 1998 Toledo has captured the unique essence of 100 cities for the Louis Vuitton City Guides and in 2010 a boxed set of 100 vibrant florescent post-cards were produced in honor of his work.

NordstromFor the American department store Nordrom’s 2008 ad campaign, Toledo painted 20x30 foot walls to serve as a backdrop for the models, shot by fashion photographer Ruven Afanador. (He got to paint on the models too!)
