Celebrating its 10th year, the Berklee Jazz Festival returns to its musical roots with a New Orleans theme. In addition to the expected free events and marquee club shows, a Big Easy–style marching band raises the roofs of the brownstones on Columbus Avenue, and a free concert on Sept. 25 features the likes of Al Kooper and the Funky Faculty, as well as Jonathan Batiste (pictured). Other top, ticketed acts include Paula Cole, the Bad Plus and Terence Blanchard. The festival runs Sept. 15–25.

Boston comes alive with the sound of jazz September 15–25 when the 10th annual Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival livens the city with free and ticketed performances in various venues around town. This year the festival pays tribute to the music and culture of New Orleans five years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Around 30 acts, ranging from Paula Cole and Terence Blanchard to Kurt Rosenwinkel and The Bad Plus, will perform, and the 10-day extravaganza culminates with a free outdoor concert on three stages over six blocks in the South End. After the jump, find suggestions for dining near the fest’s venues.
Venue: Wally’s Café This down-and-dirty haven for jazz nuts is about as New Orleans as you can get in this town. Funk-fusion band Wally’s Stepchildren plays September 19; see the jazz fest website for more concert listings (617-424-1408).
Nearby Eats Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen opened
just in time for the festivities. Though there’s no set schedule, this American with a touch of the South features live music in the evenings, and may host some Berklee performances (call the restaurant once the festival starts; 617-536-1100). If you’re in the mood for a speakeasy-style Italian, check out Anchovies. It’s long been the go-to place for dates or catching up over hefty plates of pasta for a good price (617-266-5088).
South End New American Tremont 647 makes a great watering hole and eatery for gathering more steam for the fest (617-266-4600).
Venue: Berklee Performance Center The flagship performance space of the Berklee School is hosting The Bad Plus and others (136 Massachusetts Ave., Back Bay).
Nearby Eats Sonsie buzzes for lunch and dinner with advertising execs and shoppers chowing down on dependable Eclectic fare (617-351-2500).
If you’re looking for casual, check out Café 47 (617-536-1577), which serves pizzas and affordable American, and the Other Side Cafe (617-536-8437), a funky American fare, offering lunch and dinner plus a bar open until 2 AM.
Or if you decide to take a date to the festival, check out Deuxave, a new sophisticated nouvelle French with a mod setting (617-517-5915).
Venue: Scullers Jazz Club This classic venue in the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel is hosting a lineup for the festival (617-562-4111).
Nearby Eats While Scullers has food, if you want other options, Deep Ellum (617-787-2337) dishes out Eclectic eats in a cozy
setting, while Indian-Pakistani spot Grain & Salt (617-254-3373) provides a romantic ambiance. Finally, if you love samba, check out Café Brazil (617-789-5980) for its warm, friendly service and “impeccable meats.”
Venue: Regattabar This old standard in the Charles Hotel is hosting Robert Glasper September 23 at 7 and 10 PM (617-661-5000).
Nearby Eats Rialto provides elegant Italian right downstairs from the club (617-661-5050), while innovative New American Upstairs on the Square (617-864-1933) provides diners with the option of going casual (the Monday Club) or fancy (the Soirée Room). Lastly, for great cocktails and casual American eats, try Russell House Tavern (617-500-3055). All of these are within minutes walking distance of Regattabar, so you won’t miss a beat.
Other No-Brainers
The Beehive (617-423-0069) always buzzes with live music nightly, so if you’re looking for a New American restaurant that keeps the party going, this is your spot. If you’re in the mood for a “chic” Italian on the other hand, Stella (617-247-7747) is your best bet for dinner. You can sit for dinner or grab something to go (panini, coffee) at the adjacent Stella Café for takeout.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 70,000 people swarmed into the South End for this year’s Beantown Jazz Fest, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary as well as the inspiration provided to jazz since its inception by the great city of New Orleans. Berklee College of Music, which sponsors the annual festival, sent us a couple of pictures from this years event – one which shows the masses of visitors and another which records the greeting by Berklee President Roger Brown to a special visitor from the Mass. State House. Both photos shot by Phil Farnsworth.
