The Graeme Clark Research InstituteThe Graeme Clark Research Institute (GCRI) is a multidisciplinary research institute set up to conduct, facilitate and promote research and development within Tabor Adelaide in the broad context of Christian service to the community. It is named after the distinguished Australian surgeon Professor Graeme Clark, and was launched on 29th August 2011 by Dr Lynn Arnold, CEO of Anglicare in South Australia, and a former premier of the State.

One area of public debate that has had a lot of recent publicity is the relationship between science and faith, and it is one of the central planks in the new research institute. Research staff engage in key activities, such as the scholarly publication of monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles and occasional papers; the provision of short courses, conferences, lectures and talks, appealing to both Christian and non-Christian audiences; the provision of up-to-date, accurate data on science, faith and social affairs for the media and the wider public; and participation in national and international collaborative research programs.

God and Science: In the Classroom

If you are a schoolteacher grappling with issues of Christian faith and science in your school, the God and Science in the Classroom seminar series is just for you.

About the SeminarChristian schoolteachers find themselves in a unique role as those who speak with authority in the classroom and at times they come across questions about science and faith they may not have the resources to answer. Teachers need to know how to respond to genuine questions from their students in an informed and intelligent way.

The debate about creation and evolution remains a contentious issue, and contemporary concerns coupled with technological advances often add to the dilemma for many young Christian people.

Science can be an uncomfortable topic in Christian schools but it need not be. Christian schoolteachers need a framework for thinking through the hype surrounding these topics in order to identify the genuine core concerns.

This seminar series will assist in creating a conversation and dialogue on how to discuss these issues with your students in an open and honest way.

What is involved?This innovative series of regional science and faith seminars around Australia has been designed to meet the needs of those who have a significant role in shaping the minds and hearts of members of the Christian community.

These seminars may be used as a platform to explore the relationship between science and faith in Christian schools. Each seminar is an opportunity for educators to meet and reflect together in a spirit of openness and charity.

What is in it for me?• An understanding of how to dispel the myth that science and faith have little to do with each other. • Printed resources to use in class teaching and discussion. • The opportunity for a follow up conversation with any one of the three seminar presenters.

About the SeminarsEach seminar lasts for 90 minutes, commencing with a 45 minute discussion about the relationship between science and faith, followed by a Q&A session, light refreshments and an opportunity for networking.

About the PresentersThe three seminar presenters, Graham Buxton, Mark Worthing and Chris Mulherin are all highly respected and experienced educators and pastors.

• Reverend Dr Graham Buxton is the Director of the Graeme Clark Research Institute, and Head of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Ministry, Theology and Culture at Tabor Adelaide. He is an ordained Anglican minister with extensive experience in pastoral ministry.

• Reverend Dr Mark Worthing is Senior Research Fellow with the Graeme Clark Research Institute. He is well-published and active as a conference speaker in the field of science and religion. Mark is also an ordained Lutheran pastor.

• Reverend Chris Mulherin has degrees in Engineering, Philosophy and Theology and is currently writing a doctorate on scientific and religious knowledge. He is an Anglican Minister and has spent 13 years working in Argentina.
