Cheering at the Great North Run 9 September 2018
go team!
2
Thank you for supporting this year’s Great North Run team. It means a lot to us – and our runners!
The runners have put so much into training and fundraising and they’re spurred on by your support, so we want to make it nice and easy for you to cheer them on.
This booklet tells you how to find our cheering points. We’ve also included suggested arrival times, for when runners will begin to pass each point.
Most cheerers make a day of it, and then meet up with their runner in our marquee in the charity village after the race. We’d love to see you there.
The Great North Run team is on target to raise an amazing £150,000 to fund quality services. People with Parkinson’s have told us they want high-quality care at every step of their journey, regardless of where they live. We won’t stop until this happens.
We can answer your questions on 020 7932 1342 or [email protected]

CHEER!
It’s best to use public transport to reach our cheering points, rather than driving, as the main roads will be closed for the race.
Supporter point 1 is next to a Metro station so is particularly easy to get to. Supporter point 2 is easy to get to on foot, as it’s a 20-minute walk from the finish line.
Just look out for our blue and white banners and balloons.
If anyone in your party has mobility issues then Supporter point 1 is the best option, as it’s so close to the Metro which has full disabled access.
• Remember your waterproof coat and an umbrella, just in case!
• Pack your sunglasses and sun cream – we don’t want you to burn.
• Take drinks and snacks – there may not be shops close by, and you’ll want to stay energised.
• Wear comfortable shoes, as you may be standing up for most of the day.
• Don’t forget your camera – it’s a day to remember!

Travelling to Abbotsford Road
The Metro is the easiest way to reach this supporter point to avoid road closures and congestion, unless you arrive before 9am.
If driving is your only option, check the spectator information for road closure details on www.greatrun.org before you travel.
By Metro (56)You can take the Metro to Heworth station. There are frequent departures but it can get very busy on race day so allow plenty of time.
When you leave the station you’ll find the supporter point on Abbotsford Road (A184), about 50 yards after the Heworth Roundabout, and 0.3 miles from the Metro station.

On foot/by MetroArriving on foot is the best option and the point is a 20-minute walk from the finish. Metro stations Chichester and South Shields are both around 2 miles away.
We will be on the left-hand side of the course, near to where Marsden Lane meets Prince Edward Road (A1300).
By busStagecoach runs bus services in the area but some routes will be on diversion. Check their website www.stagecoachbus.com a week before the race for the latest information.

Come and join us in our marquee at the charity village to celebrate the achievement of our runners! This also makes a great place to meet up with your runner after the race as it can be tricky to spot each other in the crowds!
Our runners can have a massage and enjoy a welcome cup of tea! They can also have photographs with their medal taken here. Drinks and snacks are provided for everyone.

• tailored support from a team of professionals who understand Parkinson’s and will work together to support their changing needs and preferences

How we’re making this happen
Driving improvements
Parkinson’s UK is uniquely placed to listen to what needs to change, drive radical improvements in care and speak out for everyone affected by Parkinson’s.
To bring about the consistently high-quality services people with Parkinson’s need and deserve, we’ve created the innovative UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network.
This brings together the expertise of leading professionals, the strategic leadership and resources of Parkinson’s UK and the voice of people affected by Parkinson’s to transform services.
The UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network is transforming care by:
• increasing the voice of people with Parkinson’s to directly help improve services
• building an expert workforce that understands Parkinson’s and the latest developments in its care and treatment
• enabling professionals to collaborate, learning from each other and working together to drive up standards
• equipping professionals with the evidence, tools and expert support they need to improve the design of Parkinson’s services and how they are set up locally
We can only transform care with the support of our generous donors and volunteers, who are crucial in enabling us to improve more services.
Together we’re determined to make sure everyone with Parkinson’s receives the best possible care to meet their needs – whatever the stage of their condition and wherever they live.

Every hour, two people in the UK are told they have Parkinson’s – a brain condition that turns lives upside down, leaving a future full of uncertainty.
Parkinson’s UK is here to make sure people have whatever they need to take back control – from information to inspiration.
We want everyone to get the best health and social care. So we bring professionals together to drive improvements that enable people to live life to the full.
Ultimately, we want to end Parkinson’s. That’s why we inspire and support the international research community to develop life-changing treatments, faster. And we won’t stop until we find a cure.
Together we can bring forward the daywhen no one fears Parkinson’s.
