World Mission Sunday “We are not here to convert the Chinese, but to do God’s will.” This was written by Columban Society founder Bishop Galvin who began the mission in China Now we are in 13 different countries throughout the world. It defines Fr. Al and my Columban mission life today. This faithfulness to God’s mission impels us to move beyond our comfort zone and encounter people, cultures, religion, and social realities unlike our own. As St. Columban once said, “A life unlike your own can be your teacher.” Fr Al did mission work in South Korea and I was sent to Brazil. I am very grateful to God for my vocation as a missionary priest. I learned and experienced God with the people of Brazil especially those most poor and marginalized. By own baptism, we all share a missionary vocation that invites us to cross boundaries of strive to meet the spiritual and social challenges of our times. We seek relationships with people, communities, and Creation which are vulnerable. Above all, we humbly yet earnestly work to do God’s will. In this way, we see the face of God in our neighbor and the stranger

I pray that all especially the youth have the opportunity to have a cross cultural experience by being a missionary in another country or working with other ethnic and cultural communities. Domingo Mundial de las Misiones "No estamos aquí para convertir a los chinos, sino para hacer la voluntad de Dios". Esto fue escrito por el obispo Galvin, fundador de la Sociedad Columbana, quien comenzó la misión en China. Ahora estamos en 13 países diferentes en todo el mundo. Esto define hoy al P. Al y mi vida misionera Columbana. Oro para que todos, especialmente los jóvenes, tengan la oportunidad de tener una experiencia intercultural al ser misioneros en otro país o al trabajar con otras comunidades étnicas y culturales. Tendrán una relación más profunda con Jesús, el misionero que nos invita a anunciar el Reino de Dios a las naciones.

HERE ARE A FEW FACTS ABOUT BLACK CATHOLICS IN THE U.S.

Black Catholics arrived with the Spaniards in Florida in the 1500’s. The Congo became Catholic in the 15th century when king Alphonso the Good converted to Catholicism. And the Portuguese conquered that area and converted many more. Later there were many Blacks in Maryland and Louisiana who were traditionally Catholic. But we don’t know for certain how many African slaves might already have been Catholics. Later, abolitionists opposed slavery on moral grounds and were very religious, well-educated Protestants from upper backgrounds. Yet they had an intellectual distain for the Catholic Church. They saw Catholics as lower-class immigrants with a bigoted religion. So Roman Catholics saw abolitionists as their enemy. Daniel O’Çonnell, an Irish statesman, saw slavery as evil and castigated the Irish in America who were sending him money to fight for Irish independence from English rule while supporting slavery in the U.S. In New Orleans, a French priest preached against slavery during the Civil War. The bishop put his church under edict to get him to stop. But these things were exceptions and not the rule in the Catholic Church at that time. The first Black priest was Fr. Augustus Tolton, the son of two Catholic slaves in Missouri. An Irish and a German priest encouraged him to be ordained but could

not find a seminary to take him, so they sent him to Rome. He was ordained in 1886. His first Mass, in his home town, was very joyful, but when he started to

work as a pastor there arose racial conflict between him and another priest. He was sent to Chicago where he started the first Black parish of St. Monica’s. But he

died in 1897 after only 11 years as a priest. The stress was too much.

17 missionaries kidnapped in Haiti by a

notorious gang

Seventeen people who traveled to Haiti for a Christian mission trip to build houses are being held hostage by one of the country's most notorious gangs, 400 Mawazo.

The gang is asking for a $17 million ransom, or $1 million for each person in the group, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal and CNN. Sixteen of those who were kidnapped on Saturday are U.S. citizens, and one is Canadian. The group of 17 includes an 8-month-old infant and children who are 3, 6, 14 and 15 years old, The Wall Street

Journal reports.

TWO SIDES OF THE ABORTION DEBATE “The Earth is Overpopulated” – Pro-abortion: If the population continues to grow, the earth’s resources will not sustain the human race. As a result, mass poverty, starvation and political breakdown will occur. This will cost many lives and those who have an interest in preserving human life should support controlling the population by eliminating excessive pregnancies through abortion. Anti-abortion: The world is not overpopulated. The fertility rate in the U.S. has been consistently below replacement levels since 1971. Over 150 countries are predicted to have fewer births than deaths by 2050. The global population is expected to decline between 2064 and 2100. As a result, abortion will only exacerbate the economic and social problems which arise from a shrinking population. “My Body, My Choice” – Pro-abortion: A woman should control her own body and what happens to it. The fetus resides in the woman’s body, so she has the right to choose whether or not to abort just like any other surgery. Anti-abortion: A fetus depends on a woman’s body to grow and develop; however, it is not part of a woman’s

body. Upon fertilization, the fetus has her own unique DNA separate from the mother’s. It is a completely different human being. Shouldn’t the right of one individual end where another’s begin? (from studentmag.org)

Today we respond to the call, through our prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers and sisters in the missions-In places like Uganda where people face food uncertainty and violence...in the Philippines where local clergy face martyrdom...In Oceania where people's livelihood are threatened by climate change...and in remote regions of Latin America where people are hearing the gospel for the first time. Respond this World Mission Sunday by supporting the priest, religious Sisters and Brothers and Lay catechists who provide loving service to those most in need. Thank you!

The English translation of Hosanna is found in Psalm 118:25: “Save us.” It came to be used as a joyful acclamation, as when our Lord entered Jerusalem on Psalm Sunday. Its meaning would be “save your people” or “save the whole world.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Make the prayer of the priest your own. Adore the Lord in a special way by making and act of

reverence at the consecration. Pray for the whole Church and add your own intentions, too.

FEAST DAY: OCTOBER 28 The name of St. Simon usually appears eleventh in the list of the Apostles. Born at Cana in

Galilee— the site of the Lord’s miracle at a wedding feast— St.

Simon was surnamed “the Zealot”, probably due to his

affiliation with a Jewish reform group. Following the Lord’s

Resurrection, he preached the Gospel and initiated the life of the Church in Persia (modern

day Iran) and Asia Minor (Turkey). He was martyred sometime in the mid-first

century, and is often depicted with the instrument of his

martyrdom— a saw.

St. Jude, also called “Thaddeus,”

was the Apostle who asked the Lord at the Passover Supper the night before His Death why He had manifested Himself only to

His disciples and not to the whole world (John 14:22) He

preached the Gospel along with St. Simon in Persia. St. Jude was martyred by being run-through with a spear, and his

relics are housed at he Vatican. St. Jude is known around the word as the Patron of causes

despaired of… when everything seems hopeless, his prayers are

often sought.
