Work with your halls or union cafe to put on a candlelit

Valentines meal using sustainable, local food. Why not

    collect donations for People & Planet. Dont let the love die;

talk to the catering department about having regular meat-

free Mondays or help them write a sustainable food policy

    (template policy available).

Love your litter! Why not put on a Can Film Festival? Instead of paying to

see your film-showing, students can get free entrance by bringing cans to

be recycled. Every Can Counts is teaming up with People & Planet to help

groups and provide free resources.Find out more:peopleandplanet.org/everycancounts.

Count or weigh the cans collected after the event so you know how much

metal has been saved from landfill.

It is estimated that if you reduce your consumption of meat and dairy by

50%, you could save 1.46t CO2equivalent per year. That is the same as 16

return flights from Manchester to London. Get your teeth stuck into these

activities to promote local, sustainable food and to launch your low-carbon

    diet projects.

Have an open day on your campus allotment or put on a grow-your-own

workshop. If you dont have an allotment yet, lobby your uni for allotment

space while getting stuck into some guerilla gardening or getting students

to plant a pot-plant to take home. Record how many people came and

how many plants were taken home.

Launch or promote your fruit & veg box scheme or wholesale food co-op

by giving out free tastings. Remember to tell People & Planet how many

people are ordering from your co-op.

Hold vegetarian/vegan cooking workshops or give out recipes.

Invite your local farmers market to have stalls on your campus. If it is a

success, ask your university to make it a monthly market.

Get 200 people to sign the pledge to be a part-time carnivore and have a

    meat-free day each week.

About a third of UK universities are still recycling less than 25% of their waste. Think thats rubbish? Launch

your Zero-Waste projects and clean up your campus.

Hold a swap shop for clothes, books and homeware. You could also put on a Stitch n Bitch event to

teach people how to customise their swapped clothes. Why not ask for a donation for materials and give

half to People & Planet. Dont forget the scales to weigh how many tonnes of stuff you have diverted

    from landfill.

Work with your union to open a competition to design a re-usable bag which will replace plastic bags in

their shops. Find out from the union how many plastic bags you will save.

Launch your ban bottled water campaign by working with the Art Society to create a waste sculpture or

    maze.

Work with university environmental management staff toimprove recycling and composting facilities

oncampus and in halls or run a eye-catching awareness-raising recycling campaign.

Get 200 people to sign the pledge to recycle everything that is recyclable, including clothes and shoes

Transport accounts for 40% of a universitys emissions. Use this day to set your transition travel projects in

motion and promote low-carbon alternatives. What are you waiting for? On yer bike!

Organise a bike auction with the university by reclaiming bikes abandoned on campus.

Dont forget to record how many bikes are sold & donate to People & Planet.

Launch your weeklybike doctor or bike maintenance workshops with a bike pub crawl, treasure hunt or

    Critical Mass.

Hold a low-carbon travel fair to showcase environmentally friendly holidays. Invite local tour guides and

hostels and ask them for prizes to raffle to raise money for People & Planet.

Petition for your university to introduce video-conferencing facilities for staff and reduce short-haul

flights.Let People & Planet know how many signatures you collected.

Get 200 people to sign the pledge to seek alternatives to international flights and never fly within the UK.

Make a new friend and help reduce your carbon at the same time. Find out more at: students.

liftshare.com. To launch the car-share scheme on your campus why not hold a sponsored hitch

for People & Planet. Before you get too cosy in the backseat, make sure you record the numberof sign-ups to the scheme.

Weve come up with a fun, Valentines themed activity thats guaranteed to get

the impact we have at universities collectively.

such as climate change quizzes. Check out: studentswitchoff.org.

As part of Go Green Week this year, People & Planet is organising a national day of action to call on

the government to cut the carbon, not education. In the face of education spending cuts, we will

urge David Willetts, the Minister of State for Universities and Science, not to divert finance away from

environmental research and carbon-cutting initiatives for universities. Together, our Go Green Week

pledges will show how determined students are to tackle climate change, and will demand that the

    Government funds our futures.

People & Planet will coordinate mass visual stunts and actions simultaneously around the country.

Students will spell out the message Cut carbon, not education through human banners, guerillagardening or clean graffiti and we will collate your photos into a giant online petition. The pledges you

collect via our e-action and on the Go Green Week stamp cards will be sent to David Willetts.
