I am happy to hear that the third batch of undergraduate students of Gujarat National Law University is set to graduate and make its mark amongst the legal fraternity of the country.

I am sure that the students have been given meticulous academic training as well as the necessary practical exposure to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to face the challenges of the legal industry. I believe that their conditioning would certainly arm them with the repertoire to excel in a diverse range of career choices such as litigation, commercial law firms, academics, research, civil services etc. The wide range of student achievements right from academics and allied legal activities like moot courts and legal writing competitions to activities like debating, essay-writing etc. is indicative of the versatility, dynamism and perseverance of the students.

As the students of the 2006-11 batch set out to take the first foot steps towards their professional lives, I would like to convey my best wishes to them.

Hon’ble , Former Chief Justice of India

Mr. Justice K.G Balakrishnan

Message from the

Chief Justice of IndiaFormer

Message from the

Chief MinisterHome to some of the greatest lawyers and freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gujarat has produced many eminent lawyers and has emerged as a preferred destination for legal education. The Gujarat National Law University is an integral part of the Gujarat Knowledge Corridor, a project aimed at developing educational infrastructure and housing some of the premier educational institutions of the country. I am happy to note that a new batch of the University is ready to graduate and follow the steps set by their predecessors in contributing towards developing of the legal landscape in India.

For the last six years, I have watched with immense pride the phenomenal success of the students of the University in national as well as international events and competitions. The success is a testimony of the excellent legal education imparted at the University.

Having been exposed to a challenging academic curriculum as well as rigorous practical training, I have no doubt that the students of the University would emerge as conscientious lawyers fully equipped to excel in the profession.

I take this opportunity to cordially invite advocates, law firms, NGOs and companies to be a part of the University Recruitment Programme and encourage this young brigade of lawyers to realize their potential to the optimum.

With all best wishes,

Message from the Law MinisterWhen Gujarat National Law University was established in July 2004, it was an occasion to rejoice for everyone in Gujarat associated with this profession since the foundation of a National Law University inevitably reflected a giant step taken towards making the state a hub for legal education. Six years down the line, it gives me great pleasure to witness the growth of this institution from infancy to adolescence. The phenomenal growth the institution has achieved in terms of student achievements and general facilities highlights the fact that GNLU has not only lived upto hopes and expectations, but has in fact, surpassed them. The commendable accomplishments of the students as well as alumni are testimonial to the University's growing stature as an institution of excellence in the field of legal education in India.

As a new batch of the University is set to graduate, I congratulate all the students and wish them luck for their future endeavours. I would also like to invite industries, law firms and other organizations to participate in the Recruitment Programme, which would strengthen the legal framework to meet with the ever-changing needs of proper legal assistance in the wake of globalization.

Message from the Director

07

It gives me immense pride to declare that the third batch of Gujarat National Law University is set to graduate in April 2011. As an institution which aims at setting lofty benchmarks in the field of legal education, we have endeavoured to ensure that these young minds stand out by catering to the needs and challenges of the legal industry through a unique blend of skill, wit and creativity.

In order to achieve the lofty standards that we have set before ourselves, the academic curriculum has been designed to be at par with international standards. Spread across almost 60 core as well as elective courses, the curriculum is outlined in a manner where students are encouraged to question and challenge the conventional, thereby pushing them to form independent opinions and develop their analytical skills, both of which foster individual growth and dynamism.

Additionally, besides the emphasis on academics, GNLU students are exposed to multi-tasking right from their very first year in the University. The University has always been at the forefront with regard to participation in extra-curricular activities such as moot courts, client counseling competitions, conferences, seminars etc. wherein the students have won commendable laurels at both national and international level.

The University also recognizes the need for practical exposure as a pre-requisite to understanding the intricacies of this profession and therefore permits the students to intern for as many as four months in a calendar year. We have a well-structured clinical training programme under which students get various opportunities to intern with NGOs, Trial Court lawyers, High Court Advocates, Law Firms and even Corporate

Houses. Through such traineeship our students have been sensitized to develop focused career goals along with being exposed to various job profiles within the profession.

I sincerely believe that our institution's emphasis on such all-round development has significantly contributed to the multi-faceted and diverse knowledge base of our students; resulting in a consistent growth of the students, a fact well-chronicled by the impressionable inroads made by their predecessors, who have slowly begun to carve a niche for themselves in legal circles across the country.

It is therefore my honest belief that given an opportunity, the students of the graduating batch would be an asset to any organization they serve and would contribute positively to the growth of the legal industry as a whole.

Prof. Bimal Patel(Director)

GNLU offers a five-year integrated LL.B Program in three different streams B.Com LL.B. (Hons.), B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.A. LL.B. (Hons.). Our curriculum incorporates over sixty subjects inclusive of elective papers, seminar courses and clinical courses in law as well as several non-legal subjects. The courses are structured to instill in our aspiring lawyers sound theoretical understanding with pragmatic insight and creative thinking. This is evinced by our academic evaluation process which places emphasis on projects, dissertations and class presentations by students in addition to lectures and seminars. In addition to academics, students are also exposed to co-curricular activities such as mock trials, client counseling, moot courts and mock parliaments which acquaint them with an interdisciplinary perspective.

The commendable achievements of the students and alumni of GNLU bear a testimony to the pool of skill and talent that the University has nurtured.

The students of the first two batches of the University have been placed with the most prestigious Law Firms, Companies and Public Sector Organizations while some have opted for litigation. A few others are pursuing their post-graduation in some of the best Universities of the world including Oxford University, Harvard Law School, Kings’ College, National University of Singapore, New York University, London School of Economics, Berkeley Law (University of California) etc.

We, at GNLU believe that it is an amalgam of its students and dedicated faculty, the academic rigour and all-round development, comprehensive curriculum and the way in which it is delivered - that makes it the University of choice for international and domestic recruiters. The Recruitment Programme, 2011 cordially invites the legal fraternity to induct a set of talented and motivated young lawyers.

The object of the University is to introduce to the industry a set of talented and motivated young lawyers, striving to contribute towards shaping the future of our profession.

Infrastructure and Campus lifeAn atmosphere of community living prevails in the University. GNLU is a residential University with separate boarding for boys and girls, with a common dining hall. The University has facilities necessary for academic and extra-curricular pursuits. The academic and hostel blocks are Wi-Fi enabled giving the students an opportunity to access various online legal and non-legal databases. GNLU also has a fully equipped computer lab, science laboratory for those pursuing a course in B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) and a library replete with books covering over 400 subjects. Furthermore construction of our new campus, spread over 50.64 acres, is underway. A large part of what I am today is because of GNLU. When I entered GNLU, I was a kid, still confused and exploring avenues.

GNLU gave me the opportunity to explore the various avenues open to me - be it sports, academics, or curricular activities, and

decide what I wanted to be. Terrific classmates, supportive friends, helpful faculty and co-operative administrative set up,

helped shape my personality, my goals and also let me achieve them.

Legal Service Cell

Student Activities

Another path-breaking endeavour was the First International Conference with the theme “Pressing Concerns of the Contemporary Legal World: International Law Today for a Better Global Tomorrow”, a novel seminar which was conducted in January, 2009. This seminar was graced with the presence of eleven panelists from seven different countries chaired by Our Vice Chancellor, Mr. Bimal Patel along with Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan.

Recognizing the potential of law as an instrument of social change, the Legal Service Committee (LSC) operates the Legal Service Cell which functions as a ‘community legal clinic’ and focuses on, inter alia, the deprivation of government benefits, evictions and issues of domestic violence. Activities like street plays, drama performances and community legal service programmes which promote legal awareness in areas akin to environment, consumer rights, human rights and right to information and labour laws are often organized by the LSC. The Legal Service Cell stands as an epitome of effective social responsibility demonstrated by young yet socially conscientious lawyers to-be.

Students are encouraged to identify and pursue their extra-curricular interests through a slew of cultural events organized by the Student Activities Committee (SAC). The SAC has also set up interest oriented clubs for students interested in debating, dance, music, drama and quizzing. GNLU also organizes a five-day annual intra college cultural fest ‘PENTAGRAM’ where students compete in diverse events such as debates, short plays, fine arts events, creative writing etc. Besides, students have actively participated in and brought laurels to the University from prestigious inter-college and national level events and competitions.

Student Initiatives The student community of GNLU has been extremely proactive and has extensively contributed towards enabling GNLU to take rapid strides forward in the field of legal education.

In a short span of six years, our students have initiated the publication of three well acclaimed journals namely, The GNLU Law Review, The GNLU Journal of Law, Development and Politics and The Developing World Review on Trade and Politics to further the objective of knowledge sharing and dissemination among the legal fraternity and to appreciate creative talent.

After the success of the first GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC) in 2009, the second edition of GIMC promised to be even better than the maiden venture, a benchmark that was quite evidently achieved. GIMC-2010 was an even more splendid affair, with greater participation from across the globe, more grandiose venues and illustrious judges including Mr. Oshima Shotaro (Current member of the Appellate body of the World Trade Organisation), Dr. Christian Haberli (Panelist at World Trade Organisation and Senior Research Fellow at World Trade Institute), V. Lakshmikumaran (Partner, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan), Prof. B.S. Chimney and our Director Prof. Bimal N. Patel.

In addition to GIMC, GNLU also organized the XXVI Annual Bar Council of India Moot Court Competition held from January 8-10, 2010. The much sought after Moot Court Competition saw participation of 30 different teams from across the country.

The University has also started Foreign Law Courses for various subjects taught by visiting professors from several jurisdictions such as Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, China, Singapore, US, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Republic of Korea and Mauritius.

This has enabled the students to engage in academic dialogues as well as explore avenues of faculty and student exchange programmes. In furtherance of the same, the University has entered into a collaboration agreement with the University of Malaya, Kuala Lampur, Malayasia. Moreover, GNLU also runs optional courses for French, Spanish and Chinese Language to equip students with linguistic proficiency in a foreign language.

Internships and Clinical EducationGNLU acknowledges the fact that legal education is not replete without due practical exposure. The curriculum at GNLU integrates the clinical method of education along with classroom teaching. The final year students have to undertake three clinical papers which expose them to certain intrinsic skills of lawyering such as drafting, conveyancing, pleading, trial advocacy, professional ethics etc. Besides, the academic schedule at GNLU makes it compulsory for students to undertake internships from their very first semester, which trains students to apply practically, the theoretical knowledge obtained during classroom teaching.

EvaluationGNLU students are evaluated on a scale of seven using a cumulative grade point average system (CGPA). Evaluation is based on a series of periodic tests, semester examinations, research papers, group discussions, dissertations and class presentations conducted throughout the semester.
