I want to apologize to our wonderful writers for not publishing all the stories we weresent for January because we had fewer volunteers this month to help us proofreadthe magazine. We had enough stories to put together a much larger issue forJanuary, but since some of our regular writers are on vacation for the holidays, weare reserving a few stories for the next issue.

We want to thank our new volunteers at the Gwangju International Center for theirtireless efforts to translate and prepare the new bus routes this month. If there is ademand, we will republish the 8 page pull-out of the routes in March when manynew foreign workers will be arriving.

A Smart Cop

Policeman testifies in court...

If you ever testify in court, you might wish you could have been as sharp as this policeman.

He was being cross-examined by a defense attorney during a felony trial. The lawyer was trying to undermine thepoliceman's credibility.

Q: "Officer -- did you see my client fleeing the scene?" A: "No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocksaway."

Q: "Officer -who provided this description?" A: "The officer who responded to the scene."

Q: "A fellow officer provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust your fellow officers?" A: "Yes, sir. With my life."

Q: "With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes inpreparation for your daily duties?" A: "Yes sir, we do!"

Q: "And do you have a locker in the room?" A: "Yes sir, I do."

Q: "And do you have a lock on your locker?" A: "Yes sir."

Q: "Now why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lock your lockerin a room you share with these same officers?" A: "You see, sir -- we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walkthrough that room."

The courtroom erupted in laughter, and a prompt recess was called. The officer on the stand has been nominatedfor this year's "Best Comeback" line -- and we think he'll win.

GROWING OLD IN KOREA –REALITIES OF AGING IN A “BBALLIBBALLI” WORLD

If you are 65 years old and Korean that means you wereborn into a country under Japanese colonial rule. Youwere four years old when the Americans and Sovietsdivided Korea into two parts at the 38th parallel. Youwere nine years old when your country entered a civil war.You have lived, studied and worked through theincarnations of Six Republics and survived life duringmilitary rule. If you were in Gwangju you were thirty-nineyears old when you experienced the 1980 GwangjuUprising. You have seen your country obtain globaleconomic success that should have improved your livingsituation; you took care of your aging parents. You knowwhat it means to be Korean, to hold the Confucian valuessuch as the responsibility between parents and children.You took care of your children. Now it is time for them totake care of you.

While the majority of people aged 65 are healthy, aminority suffer ill health and disability. They needsupport to live daily. In Korea this care is to come fromyour family. Adult children are the primary care givers totheir parents. Following the civil code of caring for agingparents has become increasingly more difficult due torapid social change.

The speed of aging, decreasing population with anincrease in life expectancies, categorizes 9% of the Koreanpopulation as senior citizens (the U.S. and Japan are at20%, Europe at 15%). Gwangju has 148,207 people(10.48%) who are over 60 years of age and the ruralregion of Jeonnam has 424,492 or 23.38% (2005).

Care needs increase as people age past 75. Since familysizes are smaller than previous generations and morewomen join the workforce, care for elderly familymembers has become more stressful for families.

While there are government programs to assist olderpeople who have no family to depend on, or are below thepoverty line, other families receive little assistance fromthe government. Over 40% of older people live with theirfamily. There is little social infrastructure or support forfamilies to cope with the particular health and livingissues of aging family members. While, overall, Korea cansupport aging parents at home due to improved standardsof living, many families are ill-prepared for the reality oftaking care of an elderly family member.

Home care service provided by the government isincreasing slightly, but there is still no respite care, a breakfor the caregiver, that is offered or supported by thegovernment. Services that provide respite care are hard tofind.

Home care service, which includes laundry, foodpreparation, cleaning and some companionship, isavailable for older people living alone, but not providedfor family care situations.

The government is responding by building care homes orhospitals, but these are more costly than most families canafford.

In 2008 the government is planning to implement a long-term care insurance system to help relieve the financialburden. But is this enough? Other more alarming socialissues that are emerging are elderly mistreatment andabuse, as well as abandonment.

Professor Cho Mi Kyung from Gwangju University’sSocial Welfare Department shared her expertise andpassion for older people care on December 16, 2006 at ourGIC Talk Series. Her area of research is in dementia. Afterlistening to her research results, it was easy to identify

with the emotions and frustrations of caring for lovedones suffering from dementia. Her research also clearlyoutlines some special troubles families caring for olderparents suffering from dementia face on a daily basis.

Of those surveyed, a majority felt it was their obligation orduty to care for their parent, thus it was unavoidable.Troubles occur especially when the senior can’t converse,creating a loss of communication, which leads toalienation. Additionally, caretakers feel resentful or bitterbecause they must care for the parent with little supportfrom brothers or sisters. They also worry about the strainon their relationship with their sibling(s). Somecare–givers have turned down promotions, as the elderlyparent would not be able to cope with such a large changeto their environment. Another issue is that while caremembers receive practical and emotional support fromneighbors, they still feel reluctant to talk about their careproblems.

In the question and answer component of the GIC Talk, itwas shared that nongovernmental agencies are increasingservices for older people. Specifically, they are focusingon social issues in order to help seniors maintain activeintellectual l ives (for example, GIC, as an NGO,encourages seniors to regularly attend the GIC Talks andTours).

SENIOR FAIR

The Kim Dae Jung Center also hosted the Senior Fair atthe beginning of December. Organized by the GwangjuMetropolitan Government, highlights included exhibitionson senior housing, care service, equipment, finance,medicine, tours and commodities (fashion). Seminarswere held on senior care, dentistry, insurance, trade andinvestment exchange, and welfare commodities. ThePublic Senior Hospital Association, Senior DiseaseInstitute in Gwangju and Jeonnam, Home NurseAssociation in Gwangju and Jeonnam and HospiceAssociation in Gwangju and Jeonnam also held seminars.A Simulation Hall of Senior Life was also available toeducate attendees about the elements of a senior citizen’slife.

SENIOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATIONS –VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

1. Korea Senior's Call Association in Gwangju andJeonnam (www.kisca.or.kr in Seoul):Non-profit organization / www.kjtel.jncsw.or.kr Tel) 062-322-0773 It is made up of a Senior Welfare Center (Senior class),Counseling Center and Weekly Protection Center. 2. Home Nurse Association in Gwangju andJeonnam - Korean Homecare Nurses Associationhttp://www.hcna.or.kr Tel) 02-2267-5688Homecare Nurse System was first adopted in Jan. 1990after revising the medical law.

What is the Homecare Nurse System? Patients areprovided with a homecare nurse system if they receivecontinuous treatment and homecare service by doctors. Itcan help patients recover from illnesses and save themmoney rather than choosing long-term hospitalization. Once a patient is chosen as an eligible recipient for theservice, they get basic homecare service, examination,medication, training and so forth.

If you want to be a homecare nurse, you should have threeyears experience (minimum) in the area within the lastten years, finish all of the proper education and then passthe test.

As aresult United States President Jimmy Carter initiatedthe boycott and 60 some countries followed suit. Only6000 athletes from 81 countries participated in theMoscow Games. Some participating countries did noteven attend the opening ceremonies nor did somemedal winners attend the medal award ceremonies. Inthese instances the Olympic song was played instead ofthe winner’s national. There was a riot among thespectators and the level of competition was said to berather poor.

Four years after the ‘80 Moscow Olympics, Los Angeleshosted the Games. This time countries under Russianinfluence boycotted. Only 6,800 athletes from 140countries participated in these games. CommunistChina took part in these games for the first time.Commercialism was also introduced in the 1984Olympics and every game was telecast with large scaleadvertising.

The 24th Olympics held in Seoul in 1988 became thereal breakdown of the walls between the East and West.A total of 195 countries and 8,500 athletes from bothWorlds participated in these Games. Korea was and still is a divided country when it appliedin 1980 for the hosting of the ’88 Olympics. The worldat that time was still divided into East and West. Koreabeing an ideologically divided country wasapprehensive lest it should fail to be nominated as thehost country. But all the people rejoiced when thehappy news of acceptance reached the country fromBadenbaden, Germany.

As “breaking down the walls” in the song suggests, theSeoul Olympics was indeed an occasion to break downthe walls between the East and West. The twopreceding Olympics, the 22nd in Moscow in 1980 andthe 23rd in Los Angeles in 1984 were half Olympics, soto speak, because the free world countries boycottedthe Moscow Olympics and the Communist countriesboycotted the L.A. Olympics in retaliation.

When Pierre de Coubertin of France revived theOlympic Games in 1896, the ideal was the eliminationof politics, race, religion, wealth, and social status. Itwas a great pity that international politics crept into

the 100-meter dash due to a positive drug test.Koreans, a divided nation, were very proud of havingbrought together the divided worlds and of havingtheir athletes compete on the friendly fields ofathletics. Because of this friendly competition manynew world records were set. Ranked by the number ofgold medals, Russia was first, East Germany 2nd,U.S.A 3rd, and Korea 4th. Korea’s 4th place was a kindof miracle. Some people say that Koreans tookadvantage of their home ground advantage. But therecords were indicative of Koreans’ self-confidence.With the phenomenal economic growth in thepreceding two decades, people came to entertain acertain kind of enthusiasm or passion for what theydid.

Koreans call this shinbaram, and once they get hold ofthis, they work wonders. This is how a country of 40million took 4th place in the Olympic competition.Leaders beware! Let people have their Sinbaram! Thegrand finale was the traditional country circle dancecalled Kanggang Suwollae in which all athletes andspectators participated Hand in Hand.

ike many in the international community, Ireally begin to miss shome around the holidayseason. In fact, nothing makes me miss thesights, sounds, and smells of home quite like a

piping-hot dinner of plain white rice and kimchi in lateDecember.

The thing is though, that while many of my Christianfriends long for a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, andtheir grandmother’s “figgy-pudding,” I miss thetrappings of a different holiday.

I want to wait for sunset and light the menorah withmy family; I want to play dreidel with my cousins andopen my presents; I want to eat my bubbe’s oh-so-tastylatkes.

I am a Jew, and I want to celebrate Hanukkah.

What is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah, which literallymeans “dedication,” is knownthroughout the Jewish world asthe Festival of Lights.Hanukkah is an eight-day longcelebration that begins atsundown on the 25th of Kislev(the third month of the Hebrewcalendar). This year Hanukkahlasted from sunset onDecember 15th to sunset onDecember 23rd. Hanukkah is a

festival that commemorates the survival of the Jewishpeople and the rededication of the Second Temple inJerusalem. (The remnants of the Second Temple arenow the holiest place in all of Judaism—the WailingWall.)

In the year 200BCE, the Jews were an independentpeople who lived in Israel, which at the time was underSyrian rule. They paid taxes to Syria and were allowedto freely practice their faith. This all changed when theSyrian-Greek King Antiochus IV came to power in175BCE. By 168BCE Judaism was outlawed and itsfollowers were forced to convert upon pain of death.However, the greatest insult came when Antiochusturned the Second Temple into a temple for Zeus.

Hanukkah:The Festival of Lights

This last act caused the Jews to revolt.

Led by Judah Maccabee, the Jewish revolt consumedIsrael for three years. In the end, Judah Maccabee andhis soldiers successfully drove the better-armed andmuch larger Syrian-Greek army out of Israel.

The Miracle of HanukkahWhen Judah Maccabee returned to the Second Temple,he found it in ruins. Everything religious wasdesecrated or burned. Pig’s blood was strewneverywhere. After cleaning and repairing the temple,Judah Maccabee wanted to rededicate it from theGreek faith back to Judaism.

The most important part of the rededication ceremonywas the lighting of the Second Temple’s large goldenmenorah (an oil lamp with many branches). However,after scouring the temple, Judah Maccabee and hismen could find only a tiny jar with enough oil for onenight. Miraculously, this tiny amount of oil burned foreight straight nights—long enough for the Jews to makemore oil and keep the menorah continuously lit.

How Hanukkah is CelebratedEvery year the miracle of Hanukkah is celebrated byJewish families throughout the world. Although thecelebration varies slightly from region to region, theessence remains the same.

The MenorahThe most important tradition for families, besidesretelling the story of Hanukkah, is the lighting of themenorah. The menorah used in today’s homes is acandle holder with space for 9 candles. Eight candlessymbolize the eight days of Hanukkah. The ninthcandle is called the shamash, literally meaning“servant.” This ninth “servant” candle is used to lightthe other eight candles and is generally placed eitherhigher or lower then the rest of the candles and in themiddle. On the first night of Hanukkah, the shamash isused to light only one candle. Each night anothercandle is lit until the menorah is full.

The lit menorah holds a special place in a Jewish home.After lighting the candles and saying prayers, themenorah is placed in a window, facing the street. Muchlike Christmas lights, the menorah in the window lets

the world know that Hanukkah is being celebrated.

The Games and the Giftsand the FoodUnlike many Jewish holidaysthat require somber prayer andrepentance, the eight days ofHanukkah are truly a festivetime. No Hanukkah is completewithout noise, gifts, games,food, and more food. Becausethe Miracle of Hanukkahrevolves around oil, traditionalHanukkah food is nothing short of deep fried goodness. The most common Hanukkah foods are latkes andsufganiyot. Latkes are deep fried potato pancakes thatare smothered in sour cream, applesauce, or ketchup.(For those of you somewhat familiar with the AmericanJewish community, think of really delicious hashbrowns with a side of extra cholesterol and guilt!)Sufganiyot are ball-shaped donuts that are deep fried,filled with custard or jelly, and then powdered in sugar.Latkes are generally preferred in America, Canada, andEurope while sufganiyot are more popular in Israel.

Another Hanukkah staple is the dreidel. A dreidel is afour-sided top that children spinin a game also called “dreidel.”On each side of the dreidel is aHebrew letter. On dreidels inIsrael, the letters are nun, gimel,hei, pei. These letters are anacronym for “A Great MiracleHappened Here.” Outside ofIsrael, the four sides of thedreidel are nun, gimel, hei, shin,

which stands for “A Great Miracle Happened There.”When children play dreidel they generally winchocolate filled coins or money, better known as gelt (itmeans “gold” in German).

Although many view dreidel as simply a children’sgame, it actually has great historical meaning. AlthoughJudaism was outlawed under Antiochus, many Jewskept a lookout outside while they secretly studied theTorah. Whenever Syrian-Greek soldiers came around,the scholars would quickly hide their texts and playdreidel. When the soldiers came around, they thoughtthe Jews were just gambling!

Finally, no Hanukkah is complete without gifts.According to tradition, children are supposed to receivesmall gifts on all eight nights. Usually, kids receive giftson only the first two nights. In order to combat theundeniable lure of Christmas and Santa Claus,Hanukkah has lately become more commercial in theWest. Some families give their children eight gifts, onefor each night, but they are generally two large(expensive) gifts, and six smaller ones.

Hanukkah in KoreaBeing a Jew in Korea is far from easy. If I want to enjoyany Jewish services, I have to go to Seoul. However, Ialso really enjoy being a “representative” of myreligious community in Korea. For many, I am the first(and possibly last) Jew they will ever meet. This meansthat I get to teach them about my family, my faith, andmy traditions. Last week I even cooked latkes for all ofthe teachers at my school. Seeing a bunch of ajumastalking and laughing over skillets full of latkesreminded me of home. I couldn’t help but smile whenthey took a bite of their first latke and yelled “맛있어요!!” All in all, it has been a great Hanukkah!

Serves: 6Ingredients: 2 lbs/1 kgpotatoes, 2 large eggs,Salt (to taste), Oil for fryingOther PossibleIngredients: You may addblack pepper, choppedparsley, and/or f inely

chopped onion to the egg and potato mixture for extrataste!

Directions:1. Peel and finely grate the potatoes. 2. Put the grated potatoes straight into cold water.3. Drain and dry the potatoes with your hands in a

colander (this may take awhile but it will make thelatkes crisp and less soggy). 4. Beat the eggs lightly with salt, add to the potatoes,and stir well. 5. Film the bottom of a frying pan with oil and heat. 6. Spoon the potato/salt/egg mixture into the fryingpan until desired size. Flatten the latke on the fryingpan and put the heat on "medium" to cook the latkesevenly through. 7. When one side is brown, turn over and brown theother side. 8. Lift out and serve very hot.

Side Note: Latkes are generally eaten with sour cream,apple sauce, or ketchup.

aturday, November 25, 2006 was one of mymost memorable days in S. Korea. I went on theGIC “Fantastic Flight” cultural tour. The tour'sdestination was to the most southern province in

S. Korea, Haenam, Jeollanam-do. It was “top banget”(Indonesia: really cool). I won this tour as a third placecrossword puzzle winner. Kamsa Hamnida very muchGIC for allowing me to become a winner. I was soexcited! I told all of my friends. I felt so bad that theycouldn't accompany me on this tour. They missedmany wonderful moments.

The day of the tour, I woke up especially early to makeprepartions for the trip, especially my warm coat andwool gloves. The weather was rather mild, but, to me itwas quite chilly. My hometown, Bandung, West Java(Indonesia) is very tropical, the lowest temperature isonly about 15-18 C. I can't imagine how cold it will bewhen it snows!

Since there were many people from our campus(GIST), the bus picked us up in front of the mainbuilding at 9 am. Our group consisted of Pakistani andIndian people. Daniel was the first GIC committeemember that we met. "Thank you for your warmwelcome". Then the bus picked up the otherparticipants and GIC committee members at the busterminal. It's marvelous having a tour with people from

all other the world. There were people from China,America and of course HanGuk too. The participantsincluded teachers, students, lovely families with theirchildren and married couples. The other nice GICcommittee members welcomed us with chocolate cakeand juice which was an extra special treat.

We arrived at our first destination, the DaeheungsaTemple, about lunchtime. We began with lunch(delicious bibimbap) in a Korean restaurant. Next, we

strolled through romantic autumn trees to the temple,which is one of the many Korean treasures. There arehundreds of Buddhist statues and many Stupas inmemory of the great monks who had stayed in theTemple. Later, we were entertained with a special “Teaceremony” led by a monk. Daeheungsa temple isfamous for the great teacher of Korean tea culture,Master Choui, and the wonderful flavor of its teas. Themonks believe that you need a good mind to make goodtea. They must have great minds because their tea wasfabulous. I would like to revisit this temple to compareit with the layouts of the other Buddhist temples I hadvisited.

Our second destination was Ddang-Kuet Watchtoweron Songho-ri, Haenam-gun. It was established on2002. Travelers are provided with beautiful scenery ofthe sea by taking the Monorail Train. After about anhour, we enjoyed a panoramic view of the sea from thetop of the tower which was about 39.5m high. Wecontinued the tour to the most popular bird watchingsite in South Korea, Gocheonam Lake. This dammedlake was built 20 years ago, since that time, 200,000migrating birds have come to this place. It has recentlybecome the most popular birdwachers destination inthe world. Unfortunately, when we arrived there, the

ducks (Ga-chang Ori) were already resting. We missedthe sunset moment when we could witness the brownand blue color of the head ducks flying and dancing inthe sky. Anyway, we still enjoyed warm ra-myun and acup of hot coffee for dinner with sounds of the duckstalking and always with chilling weather.

Our last destination was to return to our nice WARMhome, our Gwangju.

This cultural tour, sponsored by the GIC wasastonishing. I wish that Icould join this tour againand again and again. TheGIC provided us with somany conveniences andadded extra dimensionsto our tour.

n the Cheomdan area of Gwangju there is bar that isfrequented by the foreign community. The name of thebar is Billboard, and it is a small family-owned bar.One person told me, "The family who owns the bar

treats all of the foreigners like family." The son, Wong-che, is the main bartender and the mother runs thekitchen. Billboard is somewhat small but cozy.

There are tables with comfortable chairs around theperimeter of the bar. In the center is what looks like alarge pool table converted into a table with bar stoolssurrounding it. There is a decent selection of beer on tapas well as in bottles. You can't really get mixed drinksexcept hard liquor mixed with OJ or soda. Soda and juiceare available. There is a limited menu. The orders come inlarge portions. Be prepared to share. The fried chickenand chips are excellent. The draught is only 2,000 won.

About two and a half years ago, Sue Wheadon, an English

professor at Nambu University in Cheomdan, startedmeeting regularly with other foreigners on Wednesdaynights at Billboard. Billboard has become a popularmeeting place ever since then. Sue explains, " I knew thatthere were quite a few foreigners who lived in Cheomdanand neighboring areas of Gwangju, with no place nearbyto meet. Going downtown is great on a Saturday night,but it's quite far from Cheomdan. It's nice to get togethermid-week closer to home."

Billboard is a good place to meet people, foreigners andKoreans, to relax or even vent with a beer or drink of yourchoice.

The large table makes it easy for everyone to get to knoweach other. The bathrooms are spotless which is alwaysimportant here in korea. People start arriving anytime after 9:15, and sometimeshang out until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. ... or later!!

Billboard is located in the cheomdan area, across thestreet from the graves of Wol-gye dong cemetery, andcaty-corner from LC tower/Baskin Robbins.

If you do not live in Cheomdan, take a bus or taxi and getoff at LC tower. There is a large sign above the door whichyou can't miss. It is on the 2nd floor.

The regulars try to make all new-comers feel welcome.There are farewell and birthday parties plus other events.Most foreigners who frequent Billboard are Englishteachers; but some are students who are studying at GIST(Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology). There arealso Korean English teachers and locals who want to meetand socialize with foreigners.

If you are free on a Wednesday night or if you live in theoutskirts of Gwangju, why not give Billboard a try?

ast summer vacation, I traveled Europe with myfriend. Although I was a poor backpacker, I wasalways worried about pickpockets because I hadheard from so many other backpackers Europe is

heaven for pickpockets. Sometimes when I saw somepolice officers, I felt relieved and glad.

However, after I went to Sri Lanka, my thoughts andbeliefs about the police wholly changed. The police are notthe reliable ones any more. I even thought it was better forme to avoid the police. Did I commit a crime in Sri Lanka?OF COURSE NOT!! I am innocent in Korea as well as inSri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, although I am an innocent citizen,it's better to avoid the police.

Do you know about the period from 1950 to 1980 inKorea? Actually, I don’t have any experience in this periodbecause I was born in 1985. However, through books,media, and persons who experienced it, I got to know thisdark and gloomy age. Under dictatorship and NationalSecurity Law, innumerable numbers of the innocentcitizens were arrested, tortured, and imprisoned.Sometimes they were killed or became disabled. At thattime, the police were not working for citizens but forpersons in power. Of course, I believe that the presentKorean police might protect the nation’s life and security.Anyway, the present situation in Sri Lanka is the same asthe past period in Korea.

Last October 26th and 27th, the Disappearances Day washeld in Seeduwa, Sri Lanka. From 1987 to 1991, large-scale disappearances took place in Sri Lanka, especially inthe Southern district. The Disappearances Day is tocommemorate the disappeared. The problem is that army

and the police are responsible for these disappearances. Atthat time, the JVP (the communist party) tried to seizepower through insurrection, like in the Bolshevikrevolution.

To deal with this situation, Sri Lanka government gaveunlimited power to the army and the police. The policeand army unmercifully arrested and kidnapped largenumbers of people and then killed them. According toofficial data, more than 30,000 people disappeared duringthis period. In the name of securing the country from theJVP, the police and army kidnapped and killed so manypeople. However, the police and the army abducted andkilled not only JVP members but also innocent people orthe opponents of the UNP (the UNP was a ruling party atthat time). The method of "finding" JVP members wasunreasonable. One of my Sri Lankan friends was arrestedthree times because he had beard. Luckily he is alive.

However, unlike him, so many people were killed becauseof trivial reasons. If the disappeared were real JVPmembers, did the police and army kill these people? No! Ifthey were real JVP, they thought it was better to imprisonor sue them. I think not all of the disappeared people werereal JVP members, so the police and army didn't releasethem but killed them. The police and army wanted to hidetheir faults arresting and torturing the innocent people.UNP and persons who are liable for this incident still keepsilent.

This disappearances day, Ms.Jayanthi, who is thecoordinator of “Families of the Disappeared" and won theGwang-ju award in 2003, invited the Sri Lankan president

and representatives of each party. But, the Sri Lankanpresident and the representative of the UNP did notattend. Moreover, Sri Lankans are not concerned aboutthis incident because of war and difficulties in living in thecountry. Though the government compensated the familyof the disappeared, they only gave at most two hundredUS dollars to a few families. The government is indifferentto compensate the families of the disappeared andinvestigate this tragedy because disappearances still takeplace in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans have already produced a female president andprime minister. However,women's rights have stillbeen neglected, inparticular Tamil women (inSri Lanka, majority isSinhalese and Tamil isminority ethnic group). OneTamil rape victim managedto report to the police after being raped by two men. Butthe police did not help the victim. Rather, the policeremoved conclusive evidence and agreed to bail for thetwo accused. In another case, the police demanded thatthe rape victim's mother pay petrol during theinvestigation. Besides this police officers persuaded themother of the victim to drop the case. Usually, the policeregard investigations as a bother. If the accused is affluentand influential, the police protect the accused.

Moreover, torture still happens in the course of aninvestigation. These torture cases always remind me of thepast in Korea. Last November, so-called TortureTechnician Lee Geun-an was released upon the expirationof his term. While in the police department, hispromotions had been rapid. In addition, he won officialcommendation sixteen times.

The situation in Sri Lanka is the same. The police whotortured the innocent persons are promoted continuously.Only two police officers that tortured people werepunished. Many torture victims have made complaintsagainst the police officers. However, the trials are alwaysdelayed and the victims are threatened by the policeofficers that tortured them. Because of all this, mosttorture victims give up finding justice.

In Broad daylight one of the police officers that tortured avictim murdered the victim. The victim, Gerald MervynPerera, was arrested because of mistaken identity, but the

police brutally torturedhim. One torturevictim’s statementflashed through mymind. “The legalsystem is only for therich and the influentialin Sri Lanka. If you can

go to the prison, you get to know those prisoners are therebecause they are poor and not powerful.” Of course, not allpolice act like that. However, most police officers forgettheir duties. Though NGOs urge for legal reform, thegovernment ignores all these demands.

The reality of Sri Lanka reminds me of past and present ofKorea. Korea developed economically and acheiveddemocracy through the blood and sweat of so manyKorean laborers and activists for the democraticmovement. However, violation of human rights have stilloccurred in society. I know it takes some time to uprootthose things. However, if we recognize those things andtry to reform those problems of society, it will be steppingstone to solve this problems.

couple of months ago a local Gwangju newspaperprinted a poorly researched story about ESLteachers in this city. It implied that Englishteachers are a violent bunch of drunks who prowl

the streets at night looking for a fight. What upset memost about that article wasn’t the shoddy journalism butthat it propagated a negative stereotype about a group ofpeople that I am part of and it simply is not true.

I happen to know for a fact that the foreign community inthis city is generous, friendly and family oriented. Hadyou been at the soccer game/barbecue at ChosunUniversity on Saturday November 18th than you wouldhave seen proof of this for yourself. More than a hundredforeigners and dozens of Koreans donated to the Sung-binorphanage by attending the soccer match between ourlocal men’s Inter-FC team and their rivals from Gecko’sSeoul. There was an after-partyat Mike and Dave’s Speakeasywhere Seoul rockers “The FortyDays” put on another spectacularshow for us. In total over 1.5million won was raised for theorphans.

Of course a sensationalstory about a street fightbetween Koreans andforeigners is going toplay right into the fearsof many Koreans andprobably sell a lot morenewspapers. But, it isthis same “feared” groupof people who regularly

donate their time, efforts and money to helpsupport a number of local charities.

Throughout the barbecue I overheard a lot parents sayinghow great it was for their kids to get a chance to playoutside with other kids their age. Children wereeverywhere! Many people remarked that we shouldorganize this type of “family oriented” event more often. Isay “go for it” based on the deliciousness of the foodalone!

Droves of people came out to eat western style barbecue. Ilove Korean food, but it’s nice to have a little taste of homesometimes. There were hot dogs, chicken kebabs and ahuge pot of homemade chili (that was consumed in recordtime). It wasn’t just the foreigners digging in either. Plenty

of Koreans were sampling thefair too.

I’m really impressed by the waycollectively everyone pitched into put this event on. Iunderstand it’s going to becomean annual event now. It wasn’tjust a few organizers that madethat day such a success. Whenyou realize just how manypeople contributed in some wayit ends up being almost thewhole foreign community. Justlook at all the people who helpedout.

Trivia QuestionsGwangju and Craig Branch from Seoul set up a time anddate for the event. Branch accomplished no small feathimself by wrangling upwards of 20 people, (including asoccer team and a rock band) onto a bus and deliveringthem to Gwangju.

Mike from Speakeasy took a big gamble and cooked uphundreds of dollars worth of barbecue “fixin’s”. Smartmove, it all sold.

The volunteer staff at the game helped man the BBQ's andserve the hungry patrons.

Some people took up collections on their own includingJohn Boot of the Gwangju Soccer team who raised170,000 won with his students.

The G.I.C provided the tables, barbecues and otheressentials free of charge.

Alan McPherson donated his time and use of his "Bongo"to deliver the tables and large items to and from the event.

Several hundred thousand more won was donated at theSpeakeasy after-party thanks in no small part to a verydetermined and persuasive soccer player with a bucket inhis hand.

Kasia Auer and Nishat Amad operated a second barbecueoutside of Speakeasy. They managed to raise another200,000 won for the orphans as well.

There are countless more people who helped in their ownway and let's not forget all of those who donated by simplybuying a hot dog or giving a cash donation. Every little bithelps! All of the money raised will go into a trust fund forthe orphans’ education.

This type of event wasn’t a one-off either. Foreigners aresupporting local charities all year long. Gary Farr's 1970'sand 80's themed birthday bash on Dec. 9th at Speakeasyraised another 500,000 won for the orphans. There iscurrently a "Christmas Toy-Drive" on as well. Anyone withsuitable gifts for girls, beauty products, books, dolls,clothing etc. can drop them off at Speakeasy anytime andSanta will get them where they need to go by Christmas.Does all of this kindness and generosity sound indicativeof a violent, drunken mob? Let’s make our actions speaklouder than their words and keep doing the right thing.

ometimes I'll try to strike up a conversation withsomeone about television or movies. I'll ask, "Whatare you watching these days?" or "Have you seen

such-and-such a movie?", and I'll get a response like "Ihate television" or "I don't really watch many movies".Being a self-professed lover of TV, movies, music andentertainment in general, I never know how to react tothose statements. I know that society deems televisionaddicts quite "low-brow" and movie junkies only a notchabove them, but I cannot discount the endless hours of joyand pleasure that television and film have brought methroughout my life. I was a film major in university! If youare one of the aforementioned stoics who can existhappily without tuning in to your favourite show or tuningout for two hours of comedy, cheap thrills and popcornmunching, then congratulations-you need not read on. If,on the other hand, you are l ike me and craveentertainment pretty much constantly...let's talk.

Where do you find your English entertainment in Korea?Let's turn on the TV. At any given time you might catch aten-year-old episode of Friends, Under Siege with StevenSeagal, Delta Force with Chuck Norris or a reality showthat is so lame you've never even heard of it. If it's late atnight, you could stumble across a soft-core porno or acollage of European lingerie runway models (probablynarrated in French-but does that really matter?). It's easyto understand why so many Koreans develop a skewedimpression of what "Westerners" are really like. Accordingto Korean television, we have a collective penchant forviolence, sex, dumb jokes, burgers and boobies. Who isthis garbage aimed at-Westerners or Koreans? That'sanother debate. For now let's take a trip down to the localvideo shop and see what they've got.

Oh look! Jean-Claude Van Damme in a movie that wentstraight to video! Weekend at Bernie’s One AND Two!Blade! Spiderman! The Hulk! Crap, rubbish, shite! Heylook! Way back here it's Scarface. That's a good one. But

the second tape is missing. Wait a minute, I just realized Idon't have a VCR because it's the year 2007! Okay, let'sjust go to the movie theatre.

Seems like they're only playing Korean movies at thistheatre. Let's try a bigger multi-plex...now you're talkin'!Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Madagascar-only thebiggest-budget blockbusters for these folks. How about anindie? No dice. A documentary? Opso. You can see thepoint: limited selection. It's not a conspiracy. It's basicsupply and demand. If there's no demand, why supply it?Hence, only the biggest features with the most hype getthrough. So once again I ask: where are you getting yourEnglish media?

Several months ago, I was talkin' TV with a buddy down inSpeakeasy. He told me that he could get me all six seasonsof my favorite show, The Sopranos, on a burnt DVD. Wenegotiated a hard bargain: I buy him one beer for everydisc that he gives me. The next day I was in possession ofevery Sopranos episode ever aired, and he was drinking onmy tab. He quickly became my connection to a world ofentertainment I'd been estranged from for so long. Withina few weeks, Simpsons, Seinfeld, Six Feet Under and acollection of documentaries and movies I'd yet to seeresided happily beside my laptop at the foot of my bed, andmy buddy's beer belly was bubbly and bloated. A camcorder bootleg of a newly released movie becomesavailable online as soon a film is screened publicly. Oncefilms go to DVD, a ripped copy becomes available. Mostpopular television shows appear on the net within hoursafter first being broadcast. If a box set of any show’s entireseason is available in stores, then it will surely be availableonline. This means that TV programs and films can bestockpiled and watched any time the user feels like it-without ads. English-language entertainment just wentfrom being a rare treat to a buffet. Small groups of peopleare assembling in dark, seedy places, French Resistance-style, all around this country. They're passing aroundshows like Lost, Jericho and the uber-nerdy BattlestarGalactica on their 100,000 won Geumho World portablehard drives. Skeet Ulrich isn't getting a penny from it! Thesame goes for music. Entire discographies of artists areoften much easier to obtain than specific albums or tracks.But what about Lars from Metallica? Where's his cut?

Those who want to do the right thing can pay a visit to anyone of a number of pay sites where one can pay per

download; otherwise, torrent sites are completely free,and there's no shortage of them. There's even freestreaming online TV from www.tvunetworks.com, butonce again you are a slave to the time schedule. Theadvantages of bit torrent downloads make it hard for anyother option to compare.

I'm not going to focus on the minutia of how to getcompletely set up in the download game because I'm notadvocating file sharing (especially on your work computer,dumb dumbs), but how do these other people go aboutdoing it? Okay, Sopranos is nota loaf of bread and I'm certainly not starving, but KoreanTV, video shops and movie theatres can offer a bleakselection. There are other possibilities.

kiing and snowboarding are becomingincreasingly popular winter pastimes in Korea.Nearly all of the resorts in Korea are in the chillynorthern provinces, a far cry from Gwangju. The

one exception is Muju Resort, near the centre of thecountry in Jeollabukdo.

Muju Resort opened in 1990 and proudly hosted the 1997World University Winter Games. It boasts nineteenslopes, which apparently include Korea’s longest at 6.2kmand the steepest at sixty degrees. It's one of the largest andmost popular resorts.

There are two main parts, the official Muju Resort and a“ski village”. The resort is conveniently situated right atthe foot of the slopes and offers pretty much everything,such as shopping, an Italian restaurant and a nightclub!Of course, this all comes at a price. The village is an ever-expanding collection of independent ski shops, condosand noraebangs. It 's cheaper for things l ikeaccommodations and equipment rental, but isinconveniently located about two kilometres away.

Either way, you need to get to the resort to actually ski!There are two main “bases” serving adjacent faces of themountain. At each you can buy ski passes, rentequipment, use lockers and access the ski lifts. There arealso cafeterias, coffee/snack/drink kiosks, cash machines,etc. so you can stay on the slopes the whole day without

S needing to go back anywhere. Ski lifts and slopes connectthe two bases, making it possible to ski between them. Inthe evening the slopes are illuminated so you can continueskiing under floodlights.

If you've never skied before, there's a small “ski school”area at one base to get you started. For families withyoung children, there's also a “Kid's Land” tucked inbetween the two bases, with a few fairground-styleamusements and a slope for sledding.

Virtually everything you could think of for skiing isavailable for rent, such as skis, snowboards, boots, poles,jackets, pants, gloves, etc. The general cost is very cheapcompared to abroad, with skis plus boots costing about12,000 to15,000 won per day and ski jackets or pantsabout 10,000 won each.

There are five basic skiing sessions: dawn (6:30-8:30a.m.), morning (8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), afternoon (12:30-4:30 p.m.), evening (6:30–10 p.m.) and night (10 p.m.-midnight). There are various options when buying yourski lift pass, depending on which sessions you choose. Forexample, a single four-hour session pass currently costs47,000w, or a full morning plus afternoon and eveningpass will cost 89,000won. These prices may change inpeak season.

Rental charges areanything from 60,000 to120,000won per day dependenton the size and class of motor.

happy when we fulfill our desires. Some probably givetheir children the money to the extent that the family'sfinancial state becomes strained. This is abusing parents’love for us. It is tough for the parents, and bad for thechildren, as it creates a poor sense of reality for them. Ifparents give away the money, their children will not

realize the value of it.Plus, they probablywon’t recognize thevalue of the clothesthey bought with themoney because they

didn’t earn it themselves. However, if teenagers had towork part-time jobs and purchase these things with moneyout of their own pocket, they would have a better sense forthe value of money and the items they buy. This couldprovide a valuable lesson to teens: ‘You consume what youearn,’ a key strategy to live in a capitalistic society.

Desire to wear the most stylish product is quite naturaland it is not the fashion industry which spoils teens. Whatmatters is a sound consumption climate, and that teensare to be led to the proper sense of values. We can usefashion as a means to create value, and help young peoplerealize that there is more to life than the label you wear.

ecently, I watched the movie“The Devil Wears Prada.” I wasattracted to all the beautifullooking actresses and luxurious

brand names, some of which I hadnever even heard of before. I liked it allthe more because it allowed me to thinkabout the rising phenomenon ofteenagers craving for brand-namedclothes. As we see from the title, itprovides us with a glimpse inside thefashion industry through the life of anordinary girl who was seeking to be ajournalist, but totally changed as shewas hired to be the secretary to thechief editor of a fashion magazine. Asthe movie goes on, we could actually seeher ‘progress’ in fashion; from a humblegirl wearing a typical sweater to astunning stylish girl. Though the movieportrays life in the fashion industry asone that many aspire to have, the point of the movieseems to be the typical saying “You should not judge abook by its cover.”

This typical message deserves attention. Certainly,nobody would deny it, but very often their behaviorspeaks the contrary. A lotof teenagers now try towear the best brandnames to show off and tryto prove who they arebecause they think theycan be differentiated bywearing brand names that not many people can afford.So, people criticize the trend and commercialism sayingthey have terrible effects on children. However, is fashionto blame?

In Korea, students are obliged to wear school uniforms,and one of the intentions is to reduce the possiblediscrimination of certain students who are not richenough to buy brand names. If it worked, clothesshouldn’t be a reason that students become socialoutcasts. t’s time again to say “Hello!” to a new year full ofnew places, experiences and people. Some of usmaybe want a change in their lifes or want to startover again. And why not? If you really need the new

year as a start to do something different then play thislittle game with your mind. But we shouldn´t hang tohard on concepts of luck and misfortune and especiallywe shouldn’t let things from the outside give the totalcontrol of our thoughts and feelings. Becausesometimes these things play a game with us too.

Long time ago near the place, where nowadays Pohangis, lived a fisherman Yeon-o-rang and his wife Se-o-nyo. They were beloved by all people of the village andwere called sun and moon, because they broughthappiness and sunshine in everybodies life andcouldn’t exist without each other. One day Yeon-o-rangwent out fishing, but suddenly a storm came up andshaked his boat up an down and he felt into the sea. Hefought for his life and thought that he wouldn´t see hiswife again. In that moment a hugh rock in the shape ofa boat appeared above him. Yeon-o-rang climbed upthe rock and it started to move away with him. Hescreamed “Se-o-nyo! Se-o-nyo!”, but the rock boat(boat rock?) flew quickly away and Yeon-o-rangcouldn´t see the land anymore.

After a while he stranded at an island and people cameto help him, but he couldn’t understand the people andthey couldn´t understand him. So he wrote down in thesand his name and that he wants back to his country.One island man was impressed by the characteresYeon-o-rang used and invited him to his house tobecome his teacher.

At the same time Se-o-nyo was waitingand crying at home. She went everyday tothe beach, but couldn’t find a sign of herhusband. Then one day she saw a pair ofshoes in the sand and she knew that theybelonged to Yeon-o-rang. In that momentthe same rock appeared and Se-o-nyo sawthat as a sign. So she climbed up the rockand like her husband she was brought tothe strange island, where she found herlove again. So the couple could livetogether.

After a while the situation back in thecouple’s country changed. It was rainingall the time and cold, so the fruits couldn’tgrow. And the fishermen had no luck attheir work. So the king started worryingabout the situation and sent his men tofind and solve the problem. They cameback with the news, that everythingchanged after Yeon-o-rang and Se-o-nyodisappeared. And so the servants had to

travel to find the couple. One of them came finally tothe strange island. But the couple refused to go home,because on the island the people saw them as teachersand gave them the position of a prince and a princess.But Yeon-o-rang said: “It isn’t us you need. Go to myold house. My wife spun a roll of silk wear. The best youcan find anywhere. Take that as a gift for the king. Andhe should give it as a sacrifice to the gods.” The servantwent back, and did like Yeon-o-rang told him to do.Also the king followed the instructions. The ceremonytook several hours und then suddenly the dark cloudsopened up and the sun started shining again.Everything changed for the best and since then theplace was called Yeong-il... welcome sun!

Like the king and his men we need also sometimesobjects or rituals to feel better about a situation. Even ifthere is no connection between these things. Maybe youknow somebody who always wears his luck socks whenhe is watching a match of his favourite team.

There are also rituals at New Years Eve, whenpromisses were made. And we never really know if wecan hold on them. But of course it´s good to believe insomething and we can always leave, try our luck in anew country and change our lives. If it isn’t an island,so a peninsula should work too... like Korea. So let´shave a good start into the year 2007.

Proud Korean! Ban Ki-Moon became thefirst Korean Secretary-General of the UNofficially when he took theinaugural oath at the UNheadquarters in New York.His inauguration asSecretary-General drawsworld attention because heis from S. Korea, the onlydivided country in theworld and N. Korea’s

nuclear issue is still pending. He discarded archaicprejudices that a person from a divided country can’t be aSecretary-General and rewrote history by being theworld’s best diplomat. Ban Ki-Moon also elevated thestatus of S. Korea and increased Korean pride whichdeserves support and admiration.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon declared that he wouldset as a priority re-establishing the UN’s trust and fullydedicate himself to be a mediator and an arbitrator indisputes. He also said that he craves a dynamic andcourageous bureau rather than a passive one. There aremany issues such as unresolved disputes, famine, severegaps between developed countries and developing andunderdeveloped countries, etc. None of these issues will beeasy to deal with. They will require internationalcooperation for solutions and this is where his work as aninternational mediator comes in. Also, on his plate, is theupcoming” 6 Party” talk (which will resume soon) and anearly solution for the nuclear issue. It will be a great dealof pressure on him, since he is from S. Korea, but, he mustseek help and compromise considering its gravity andinfluence on security in the Korean Peninsula and NorthEast Asia.

UN staff members must be ready for dedication andcommitment to ensure that the UN can carry out itsmissions. As Ban Ki-Moon indicated, it is high time to testthe efficiency and integrity of the UN staff members.

We wish Ban Ki-Moon well with his new post as theSecretary-General of the UN. We look forward to the UNmaking progress in enhanced security and developmentand human rights as it paves the way to make the world apeaceful community free from hardships for all.

Shrek’s icy birthday shearHow to take advantage of the recentmedia attention caused by the icebergs floating around the SouthIsland? Why, shear a sheep on one ofcourse. This is where Shrek’s famecame into play, just in time for his 10thbirthday. How lucky can you be? NewZealand Wool decided to combine thetwo events in order to generate some

publicity and raise money for the “Cure Kids” charity.

Good idea? To Shrek’s owner, John Perriam, it seemed soat the time, but he vows “never, never again”. Perriameven tried to halt the stunt days before it was due to takeplace, realizing that it probably wasn’t the safest or wisestthing to do. However, the plans had been made and theshear went ahead. Luckily for Shrek, there were nofatalities, his custom-made crampons* keeping him steadyenough. But Perriam admitted the experience was“terrifying”. While on the iceberg, it had a ‘convulsion’ andthe ice started to crack and split. It seems his concernsabout safety were warranted.Shrek, the Bendigo merino, rose to stardom worldwidewhen he was discovered in a cave in the high country ofBendigo Station. Marriage on ice rocks?It seems New Zealand Wool is not the only one wanting totake advantage of the iceberg phenomena. A Dunedincouple decided they wished to make their weddingceremony unique, saying their vows atop one of the iceflotillas. This however, did not come to be.

The couple had planned to hire a helicopter, grab awedding celebrant and their crampons, and fly to one ofthe Antarctic visitors to say their “I do’s”. However, theproposal was seen as too risky and put on ice (punintended). According to a noted search and rescuehelicopter pilot, Richard ‘Hannibal’ Hayes, the unstableicebergs made the mission highly dangerous.

Danger-ous victory County Roscommon is not known for its victories on theGaelic football field. So when County Roscommon beatCounty Kerry in a recent minor football match, theycelebrated in style. All previous Roscommon All-Irelandwinners were invited to a grand banquet at Hyde Park, thecounty grounds. Any surviving members of the 1943-44senior double, the U-21’s of 1966 and 1978, and anyformer minor winners were feted and photographed forposterity. Also, seen at the event were the most powerfullawyers, judges, and law enforcement officials in CountyRoscommon society.

Naturally, James “Danger” Beirne, Roscommon’s mostingenious and audacious criminal, stood out from thecrowd.

Danger is well known throughout Ireland and GreatBritian for his dramatic criminal flare. Although he triedto import several million Euros of cocaine into London in1999, such felonious acts pale in comparison to his earlierwork.

Danger is possibly best known internationally for hiscameo performance in the “Great Nigerian Fish Scam.Thanks to Danger, the Norwegian bank TromsoSparebank lost a cool $3.5 million in commission to TomForde for a multi-million fish deal between Norway andNigeria. Although this was a “fishy deal,” there were noactual fish, no money paid for it, and the Norwegians wereleft high and dry. Part of Danger’s role in this memorableenterprise was to chauffeur the highly impressedNorwegian bankers in a Rolls Royce and transport themby helicopter to Forde’s ‘manor estate’.

Incidentally the nickname “Danger” comes from hisexploits on the football field, especially near goal and notfrom anything he may have subsequently becomeinvolved in. Danger likely knocked more fun out of thebanquet than all else in attendance.

A rare sight, tourists shelled out up to $500 foreach return flight to capture the mountains of ice on film.Some even took the trip twice to admire the spectacularanomaly. The Antarctic icebergs usually don’t venture sofar north, melting before they make it. However thecombination of a cold snap around southern NZ andfavorable ocean currents allowed the bergs to arrive in thearea intact. According to the National Institute of Waterand Atmospheric Research, the phenomenon hasn’t beenwitnessed since 1948. y very first view of the Indian Cultural Centreoccurred on a rainy evening as my taxiapproached the building. It was a multi-floored

modern building with a traditional Indian painting on thefront wall and carved ethnic window frames. The paintingreminded me of similar paintings in my homeland. Whenthe taxi stopped at the front door of the Centre, I heardthe melodious hymns of Indian bhajan. I got out of thetaxi quickly, as it was drizzling, and rushed towards theentrance. I was taken by surprise to see full-scaledecorations at the entrance to welcome the guests; it wason par with any Indian home on a festival day. The feelingseemed to dominate all my senses, making me believe Iwasn’t in Korea anymore. The aroma, colors and melodyblended with each other to create an Indian atmosphere.The Indian Cultural Centre is a little India spread acrossthree floors, with two floors of galleries, an exhibitionspace, one concert hall , a gift shop and a visitorinformation office. I followed the signboard to the elevatorand then walked through a passage to reach theinformation office on the third floor. Yet again, I wassurprised to see people dressed in Indian cloths withintricate attention towards their attire, colorful sarees,sparkling jewelry and bindi. I could see friendly faceswelcoming me, which made me very comfortable. I askedfor Ms. Yongmi, with whom I joined later on the stage toperform Indian classical dance. After the inauguration ofthe Cultural Centre at the concert hall on the 3rd floor,which had speeches, including one by India’s Ambassadorand Indian style cultural performances by Indians andKoreans, I had an hour to explore the site. High-spirited

volunteers took me around. I got a chance to have aglimpse of everything, which allowed me to appreciate thedeeper beauty of the place that could only be revealedafter studying it in detail over time.

I started my tour of the Centre from the first floor and wasable to experience an inimitable collection of ethnic,elegant and fanciful handcrafted natural wood carvedfurniture. Included among this collection are few antiqueswith an excellent interplay of intricate carvings, colors andexquisite artwork. Also, it was exciting to see somemusical instruments, both modern and ancient, from

art. The pictures depict kings and queens in theirtraditional costumes, lifestyles, romantic ventures andtheir courtly grandeur. Also, the mural of the Taj Mahal,the world’s most romantic monument, just leaves youstunned.

I personally feel as if the collection is slightly biased toonly a few regions of India. I am impressed by theCentre’s plans to incorporate more themes on diverseaspects to portray complete facets of Indian culture andtradition. I appreciate and wish them good luck in theireffort to promote knowledge, understanding and anappreciation of India’s culture to the people of Gwangjuand its visitors.

hhh, December and January - arguably thebest months for any sports loving couchpotato in the United States. And, believeme, there are many. In Korea, I am slowly

transforming into a PC bang potato in order tocatch the latest scores and highlights.

What's going on, you ask? Almost too much tookeep track of, but here goes:

NCAA FOOTBALLThere are 32 Division I-A Bowl games, spanning 21days (Dec, 19 ~ Jan. 8), culminating in the Tostitos

Bowl Championship Series title gamebetween top-ranked

and unbeatenOhio State (12-

0) and theUniversity of Florida

(11-1). The so-calledchampionship match-up will take

place in Arizona on Jan. 8.

Once again, the BCS, or “BS” system, as manylike to call it, did not do its job, which is to create aclear-cut national title game. This time around, noone had any problem with the undefeated Buckeyesbeing there, but the Gators and the University ofMichigan have only one loss.

Many felt the Wolverines (11-1), whose only defeatwas a 42-39 loss at the hands of Ohio State,deserved a rematch in Arizona. Unbelievably, afterthe all the formulas and mathematical calculationsthat make up the computer part of the BCS systemwere completed, Michigan and Florida were in a tiefor second. The human polls gave the Gators aslight edge and, thus, a berth in the championshipgame.

"I hope that, in the future, we can have a systemwhere all of the answers are decided on the field,"said an understandably peeved Michigan head-coach Lloyd Carr. "We need to get away fromanything that's not decided by the playersthemselves."

If Ohio State beats Florida, as it should, theBuckeyes will be the consensus national champion,but if the Gators pull of an upset and Michiganknocks off the University of Southern California (10-2) in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, there may, yet again,be dual-national champions. When will the powersthat be stop the insipid debating and go to a playoffformat, just like every other division of collegiatefootball does to decide its champion?

On another note, is it just me, or does there seem tobe a new bowl game added every year? This year,there are "Poinsettia" (what the heck is that?),"Papa John's", "Meineke Car Care" and "Chick-Fil-A" Bowls. Good gracious, will it ever stop? I hearnext year they may have a "Clean Your StinkyToilet" Bowl.

More than a third ofthe way through theregular season, someof the same old faces(i.e. Detroit, SanAntonio, Dallas andPhoenix) look toughto beat while somenew mugs (i .e.Orlando, Houston,Utah and Denver)also present somestiff competition.

It's too early to make any predictions, but, as hasbeen the case in recent years, the WesternConference looks much stronger than the East.Then again, last season's Eastern Conference champ,Miami, took care of Dallas in the finals, so whoknows?

Cleveland's 22-year old phenom, LeBron James,Denver's Carmelo Anthony, and Phoenix's SteveNash, continue to impress with consistent andsuperb play, while Portland's Zach Randolph is theonly player in the league to be averaging over 25points and 10 rebounds a game. Randolph, knownfor some of his foolish on and off-court antics, wasrecently suspended one game for giving a fan thefinger in Indiana.

Speaking of childish behavior, a Dec. 16 gamebetween host New York and Denver saw a massivebrawl break out late in the contest. After suckerpunches were thrown and things cooled down, tenplayers were ejected. Boys will be boys, I guess? Oroverpaid, under-disciplined men will be babies?Take your pick.

Western Conference while Buffalo, Atlanta,Montreal and the New York Rangers head up atightly contested East.

Second-year players Sidney Crosby (Canada) ofPittsburgh and Alexander Ovechkin (Russia) ofWashington have proved their phenomenal rookieseasons were no fluke, while New York Rangersveteran Jamomir Jagr (Czech Republic), playing inhis 16th. season, continues to mesmerize opponents.

Looking for a volunteerWe are looking for a volunteer to help uswith the development of a new sun beareducation exhibit which will containinteractive displays and informationaimed at the local public in Kalimantan.As part of the position we hope that avolunteer will be keen to help with thecare-taking of ex-stray cats (55) and dogs(5) currently looked after by us at thefacility (i.e. feeding, medical care, nursingof small newcomers, cat enclosureenrichment). Ideal would be someone whohas some experience with training dogs(in good behaviors) and who is alsointerested in enrichment work with thesun bears in their natural enclosure at thefacility.

There is no deadline for sending inapplications-but the sooner the better! Werecommend that a volunteer would beable to stay for at least 4-6 months. At thefacility we can provide housing and foodfor a volunteer, but unfortunately not theairfare.
