PRESIDENT'S CORNER from Susannah
Well goodness, I am still recuperating from all the good food
we had at the club BBQ. Besides the food, what a great day it
was weather-wise. Thanks again to Dave and Kitty Scott for
getting us the great location. And thanks also to all of you who
pitched in to make it a fun day. Each of you who helped gets
an entry into our volunteer contest. A special thanks to our
BBQ chefs who tried, but failed, to set the pavilion on fire (just
kidding!). Check out the pictures below. The digger toss was a
hoot! And check out how our engineer members used the grid
system to find those pesky coins in the Pinpointer Pennies
game. Sheesh guys, let's not over think this! LOL
We are again going on our annual Rolla hunt. The key here is
to go "low and slow" because most of the ammunition is 5 or
more inches down. It also rings low on the scale and
sometimes very faint, so it's wise to dig every signal. We get this
hunt only because we continue to show just how respectful of
the owner and his land we can be. The owner has stated
several times how polite everyone was and that every one of us
showed him their finds. We use the Genevieve Method, where
the owner looks at every find and piece of trash to decide if he
wants it or not. So far he has not wanted anything, even
including the artillery button and the canister shot that was
found last year. This year, let's continue our wonderful
reputation, and I hope we all get those great CW finds!
We don't say a whole lot about our Pennies for Poverty jar, but
it is an important part of what we do, and was one of the things
that caught the eye of a newspaperman last year, which led to
an article about our club. If you dig any clad coins and don't
really want them, why not consider giving to charity? Of course
you can also put in any other change (or bills!) you have. We
only ask that they be coins that would make it through a coin
machine. Those "Stinkin' Lincoln" ones with the zinc cores just
crumble and are not usable. At the end of the year we present
a check to Heifer International, specifically for their program
that helps small and struggling farmsteads in the US. The
Heifer program helps them to source secondary income outlets
such as agrotourism, organic gardening, farm B&Bs, and much
more. Since we hunt farmland, specifically the smaller farms,
we thought this would be a nice way to give back.
HAPPY HUNTING!

MEETING NOTES from Casie
September is here and our numbers are
continuing to grow! We had 41 members join us
at the September meeting. Three guests also joined us and a
couple even signed up! Welcome aboard!
An online vote was held to purchase liability insurance for the
club. This passed. Although we are moving forward on this, if
you have any experience in insurance please let an officer
know so we can pick your brain.
A vote was also held to raise the annual membership dues to
$30 per individual and $20 per additional household member,
beginning next year. This was passed unanimously.
On October 8th
Rick Crowell will be teaching an introduction
to metal detecting at the Chesterfield Recreational Complex. If
you are interested in more information, details can be found
on the website under CALENDAR. Or you can contact him
here 314-882-5441
The club is looking for a presenter for the October meeting. If
you have any ideas or want to volunteer email the club website!
Nominations for president and treasurer will start in October.
If you are interested, it’s a great way to keep the club going and
help inject fresh new ideas. The work load isn’t too much, less
than an hour a week, and some weeks none at all!
Oct 5 is the next Civil War hunt in Rolla. In order to get
directions, you will need to email the club stating that you are
interested. This is the same as last time--please do not discuss
this hunt site with people outside the club.

Metal detectorist finds
£10,000 gold ring in garage
40 years after discarding it as
worthless
- Phoebe Southworth, The Telegraph
A metal detectorist who discarded a gold ring in
his garage for 40 years after a museum told him
it was worthless has discovered its real value is
£10,000.
Tom Clark, 81, dug up the buried treasure
while scanning an area of farmland near
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979, then put
it inside a metal tin and forgot about it.
But the retired leather craftsman came across
the rare seal ring eight years ago while sorting
through items from his mother's house after she
passed away.
He got the item valued and was astonished to
discover that it was actually a 670-year-old
medieval artefact dating back to 1350.
It is due to be auctioned off in Derbyshire on
Tuesday (Aug 27) and is expected to sell for
between £8,500 and £10,000.
The turn of events is similar to the plot of BBC
sitcom Only Fools and Horses, when brothers
Del and Rodney come across a watch in their garage
which is then auctioned off for millions of pounds.
Mr Clark said: "I had completely forgotten
about it. At the time I'd only been metal
detecting for 10 years and didn't realize the ring
was anything special. It was all twisted and
broken when I dug it up."
"I put them all in a tin and left them in the
garage at my mother's house," he said.
Mr Clark, now a much more experienced
collector, said he instantly knew it was a seal ring
dating back to the 1300s and would have
belonged to someone important given its
decoration and quality.
He added: "It's rare and elegant. I'd love to
know who it belonged to."
A Latin inscription on the ring translates as 'I
hide the true message'.
Tokens
-Jack Kountz
I have found close to 200 tokens. Advertising,
school lunch, milk, bread, gas, political, you
name it. Shown here are three of my favorites
found around my neighborhood. A veiled
prophet from 1902, an Adolphus Busch token
from 1916 and a Cleveland Thurman political
token from 1888. Some old tokens have an
unbelievable value and are neat to find.
