Win BIG at Saratoga Casino!Win BIG at Saratoga Casino!

Tony ThorpeMaverick Sharp

There is some-thing about gam-bling that is just contagiously fun. Note the people pouring into Black Hawk and Central City every day and the high-ways packed with cars trekking up the canyon or around the Central City Parkway. The gaming business appears to be having a very good year and the casinos are handling this business really well.

Food, beverages and services are just Las Vegas quality. I now that many peo-ple just kind of sluff off Colorado gam-ing because they don’t think it is Vegas or Reno quality. Well it is now.

Granted, we don’t have the big name performers but there are some good weekend lounge shows especially at The Reserve, which will feature the “Feel This Moment” show, see page 11 of the Colo-rado Gambler for more information.

I mentioned playing in a Saratoga Blackjack tournament that was well re-ceived.

We’ve had the Heartland Poker Tour events several times in Black Hawk at the Golden Gates Casino and it begins on Friday, Sept. 5.

Poker is a daily event with prizes ga-lore for special hands that really do hap-pen. Poker and blackjack are a real mys-tery of how those cards come out of the deck. One never knows what is coming next in a big pot poker game or a black-jack bet. Cards do make the player but the player had better know what to do with those good cards when received.

It is interesting to note that 130,000 signatures were turned in to allow a new casino to be constructed at the Arapa-hoe Race track and other sites in Pueblo and Grand Junction. Pitch is that the money will go to needed school funds.

The issue will be on the November ballot and we hope that voters say “no.”

It seems that the rules were made about 24 years ago where the casinos

could be built in part to create jobs, and rejuvenate dying towns along with rais-ing some money for parks and recre-ation, along with some college funding. This has all occurred and it has raised more than $100 million per year for the state of Colorado.

Casino investors have invested mil-lions in infrastructure, new buildings, equipment and technology. Employees have purchased mountain properties. Now to allow casinos to operate at race-track sites seems like a last gasp for the horseracing business at the expense of our mountain gaming communities.

We do need some sports book loca-tions where bets can be made on pro-fessional sports, such as in Vegas and Reno, and that would generate millions of dollars in new tax revenues for Colo-rado.

The betting does occur and we should make it legal and tax these bets.

First pre-season Broncos game is coming up Thursday, Aug. 7, against the Seattle Seahawks. Go Broncos!

PAGE 10 THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years August 5 - 18, 2014

By Ray Lundin - GemologistThere have been many claims for the

“Worlds Largest Gold Nugget.” At the time that some of these large nuggets were found (mostly in the 1800s) they were indeed the world’s largest. However, as time went on and gold strikes occurred all over the world, larger nug-gets were found and the title was shifted from one nugget to anoth-er. What was needed was a clear definition of “gold nugget.” The type of nugget that most people are familiar with is the true gold nugget, i.e., a blob of gold formed by nature.

The other type is called “reef gold,” that is, gold that ap-pears imbedded in rock, usually in quartz. When the rock is removed from around the gold, the gold can be recovered in one piece. Reef gold is synonymous with the terms ledge, lode and vein. There are many claims to the world’s largest nugget. Some say the world’s largest nugget in existence, others say the world’s largest recorded nugget, and some say the world’s largest nugget on dis-play. These five nuggets are graded by weight. Now the largest five.

Honorable Mention: Holtermann

Nugget - By far the largest single mass of gold ever found; however, it was not a true nugget – it was reef gold, meaning it was composed of other minerals imbedded in the gold. It was found in New South Wales, Australia, in 1872 and weighed about 630 pounds (about 400

lbs. of gold when smelted). Holt-ermann was the manager and part owner of the Star of Hope Mine where it was found. The “nugget” was broken up and smelted ex-cept for a piece that Holtermann chipped off for a souvenir.

Fifth Largest Nugget: Hand of Faith Nugget - This 61 lb. 11oz nugget was found in 1980 in Western Australia and is the larg-est nugget on public display in

the world. Using a metal detector, it was found lying in a vertical position just below the surface by Kevin Hillier behind his trailer home. It was sold to the Golden Nug-get Hotel and Casino for a million dollars and is now on display at that casino in Las Vegas.

Fourth Largest Nugget: Serra Pelada Nugget - Found in Serra Pelada (Bare Moun-tain), Brazil in 1983 by Julio de Deus Filho. It weighed about 136 pounds. Serra Pelada was like the California gold rush in 1849. Over 100,000 prospectors descended on Serra Pe-

lada until the government stepped in claiming that all mineral rights belonged to the government. Later, in 1990, the miners hit water flooding the 330-foot deep pit that turned the pit into a lake overnight drowning many miners. The nugget is displayed at the “Money Museum” at the Banco Cen-tral of Brazil in Brazilia.

Third Largest Nugget: Welcome Nug-get - In 1858 a group of 24 miners working a claim in Victoria, Australia unearthed a nug-get weighing about 152 pounds. At the time it was the worlds largest single piece of gold. But the fame lasted only 11 years when a larger gold nugget was found. Note that there were a lot of large nuggets found, and not all of them were recorded for fear that those who discov-ered them might be robbed.

Second Largest Nugget: Pepita Canaa Nugget - weighing in at 2145 0z., about 157 lbs. was found Sept. 13, 1983 by miners at the Serra Pelada Mine in the state of Para, Brazil. It currently resides in the Banco Central Mu-seum in Brazil. No other information is given.

World’s Largest Nugget: Welcome Stranger Nugget - Weighing in at about 158 pounds, this nugget was found three inches deep in Victoria, Australia, in 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oats. Since there were no scales capable of weighing a nugget of this

size at the time, it was broken up into three pieces and weighed at a bank. In 1897 an obe-lisk was erected near the spot where the nug-get was discovered. A replica of the nugget is in the City Museum, in Melbourne, Victoria.

Other Notable Nuggets: Tom’s Baby Nugget – The largest Colorado gold nugget was found in the Breckenridge region and weighed 13 pounds.

Mojave Nugget – The largest California gold nugget known to exist today was found in 1977 using a metal detector. It also weighed 13 pounds.

The largest Nevada gold nugget weighed 25 pounds and was found in Dry Gulch, Ne-vada in 1877.

(Author’s note: The Internet shows a pic-ture of a huge boulder shaped “nugget” with a man standing over it. It doesn’t look real - it was too smooth. No info on the weight, where was it found, who found it, where is it now, if it’s real, what’s it worth?)

The other day a friend and I were talk-ing poker via email and he responded to my standard question of how he was doing at the tables with, “You know, I treat it as a second job. If I can make a little dur-ing my three or four hours on the hill I’m happy.”

Wow - that really hit home because what he is doing is the true definition of a second job. Making money at something you like to do because you are good at it over the long term.

This is how I like to think I play the game and why. But, if I am going to be honest with myself, I have gotten away from that simply philosophy and have allowed the game; the players; and my playing timeframes to affect the way I play. How do I know this - by check-ing my poker book and noticing the higher and more frequently spikes either up or down in my results at the tables along with an over-all downward trend in my YTD results.

In evaluating the book, I can see that over

the past 90 days I have had nine ses-sions of large posi-tive wins more than $500 and during the same time frame 12 sessions of negative losses of the same amount or more. Now that’s a lot for a player like me who fo-

cused on a money management type of game.Interestingly enough, in the 90 days prior

to that back at the beginning of the year I had seven sessions with winnings over that $500 mark and only three losing sessions for the same amount.

So the big question is - why did these pat-terns change? This is what is known as “a leak in the game.” It’s time to plug that leak and get back to playing poker like it’s a sec-ond job!

This means no losing in the long run - that would be like paying your boss at work to al-low you to work there.

So, here is the formula to make poker a second job for me: (it works when I stick to it).

First: Treat poker like a job - what are the hourly expectations? Base this estimation on historical winnings; experience; and the game being played.

This means keep the hourly expectations reasonable. For example if a player average $100 win for every 10 hours played - $10 an hour is a reasonable expectation. But, stretching is good - try to improve at least 10%, thus go for an $11 average. It doesn’t seem like much but does add up over time.

This also means understanding where your experience stacks up against those you are playing. For example, if I am playing against tourists and people out to play with the big boys, I have a better chance of win-ning more than if playing against the pro-fessionals. The reason is simple - the pro-fessionals do not build the value of a pot, unless they are ahead in the hand while the recreational player is there for the action and will toss chips in chasing a card hoping to hit, thus building the pot.

Be realistic based on the game you are playing. If playing a $1 - $2 / $100 Hold em game the pots may be smaller so the expected return may be lower than a $30 - $60 ½ kill Hold’em game.

Second: Play shorter and more struc-tured sessions. This is something I am already in the habit of doing - just 3 to 4 hour sessions. But the key is (and what I have gotten away from) is to treat these short sessions as one big session. This means playing the first hand and the last the same; being disciplined on the times you are dedicated to playing; and being OK to leave no matter where you stand results wise.

Third: Don’t get caught up in the short-term results - you are interested in the long term hourly rate. What is a long-term re-sult? For me, it’s by the month (maybe 20 sessions) and by the overall end of year re-sult. The true long-term result is the YTD; what did you make as an hourly rate at the end of the year? That is the only true judge!

So, thanks to my friend I just picked up my second job again and while it may not have medical benefits - it does bring with it a potentially outstanding wage; a really fun work environment; and an opportuni-ty to improve during every session all the way up to becoming the Poker Champion of the World! Time to go to work!

Remember - Play your game!

Golden Mardi Gras, Golden Gates and Golden Gulch offer entertainment galore

By Vi Cooper Visitors to any of the three Af-

finity Gaming casinos, Golden Mardi Gras, Golden Gates and Golden Gulch, are in for a sur-prise. Since acquiring the proper-ties in November 2012, Affinity has completely reenergized their venues, installing escalators, re-modeling elevators, the addition of an all new buffet, remodeling the poker room, the addition of more than 250 of the newest slots and the launch of the A-Play Club, one of the best clubs in town.

“If you have not been in lately, please come see us. Our team is capable of delivering the best gaming experience in Black Hawk and guest service is our top prior-ity. We want our three casinos to be everyone’s first choice when they think about spending time in Black Hawk,” said Director of Marketing Elizabeth Palar.

With the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlor being the home of the Heartland Poker Tour and the Colorado Poker Champion-ship, Affinity’s reputation as the best poker room in town has grown exponentially. The Colora-do Poker Championship starts on Friday, Aug. 15 through Monday, Sept. 1. The Heartland Poker Tour

begins Friday, Sept. 5 and runs through Monday, Sept. 15, with both events taking place in Gold-en Gates’ expanded poker room. Players must be 21 years of age to enter and top prizes are running upwards of $200,000.

At the three casinos, players can choose from more than 1,100 slot machines, 32 exciting table games, including video poker, vid-eo baccarat, blackjack, craps, rou-lette and three-card poker. Affini-ty’s Golden Gulch is one of the last all-coin casinos in Black Hawk. At

the Mardi Gras, with its theme of colorful New Orleans-style casino games, there is even a selection of traditional three-reel, pull-handle slots for the sentimental gamer. Also at the Mardi Gras, there are some 750 slot and video poker machines with the modern ease of ticket-in, ticket-out technology, so that winners are not weighed down with pockets full of change.

With promotions aimed at re-warding loyal guests as well as drawing new visitors, Affinity’s ca-sinos are offering a variety of ways

to win big money. Their “Million-Dollar Summer” offers more than 250 players a chance to become a millionaire. Two winners per drawing, four drawings on Fridays and five drawings on Saturdays, with bonus drawings on Labor Day weekend, increase the odds of winning.

The “$60,000 Sizzlin’ Sunday” drawings, held hourly from 1 – 5 p.m., let A-Play Club members earn an entry for every 100 base points or 30 minutes of tracked table games or live poker play. There will be two winners at each drawing and winners must be present.

The “Treasure Hunt Progres-sive Finale” guarantees $30,000 to one lucky winner on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10 p.m., when names will be drawn until a winner is present. Players earn one entry for every 10 base points on slots or 30 minutes of tracked table games. If you have played at any of the three Affinity Casinos over the last year, you have valid entries in the Trea-sure Hunt drawing and you could be $30,000 richer.

Nifty 50+ promotions on Mon-days and Fabulous 40+ promo-tions on Wednesday lets A-Play Club members who are aged 50 and better and 40 and better re-ceive 50 percent off all food items when paying with points. The program also lets players pick their perk and receive 5X Points on slots, play a kiosk game for a chance to win up to $500 or choose to participate in the Nifty

50/Fabulous 40-slot tournament with $1,000 in prizes.

With multiple food options, the Affinity properties have everyone’s preferences covered. The Bourbon Street Cafe and Buffet offers high quality and a wide range of offer-ings to diners who want an upscale selection at bargain prices. For a Tuesday lunch, the buffet had a variety of foods that included mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables, Cajun chicken, Salis-bury steak, dirty rice, pot stickers, cabbage rolls, fried shrimp, cat-fish, mussels, crawfish, clarified butter, crab legs and hand-carved tri-tip steak. Additions include lasagna, various pastas, Panini, pi-lafs and risotto.

An expansive salad bar fea-tures a variety of options, includ-ing romaine and spinach with all the fixings, plus boiled shrimp with lemon and cocktail sauce, fresh crab and potato salads. The dessert tables offer a chocolate fountain with fresh strawberries, pineapple, marshmallows and crispy treats, as well as cakes, pie and other sweet treats. According to responses from recent surveys, the Bourbon Street’s salad bar and desserts rated five stars.

Buffet prices are very rea-sonable with breakfast on Fri-days $6.99, lunch $9.99, dinner $16.99, Seafood Feast Fridays $19.99 (with crab legs and a lob-ster tail), Super Saturday Feast $19.99 (also includes crab legs and a lobster tail) and Champagne brunch on Saturday and Sunday $15.99. Those prices increase by $1 for breakfast and lunch and $2 for dinner and brunch without an A-Play card. There is also an all-new breakfast menu at Lucky’s, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., on the second floor of the Mardi Gras.

Food is served at all three Affin-ity properties, including the Gold-en Gulch, where you can enjoy hot dogs and snacks.

From the new entrance and marquee to the expanded front patio, where a sculpted black hawk reigns, the Golden Mardi Gras and its sister casinos Golden Gates and Golden Gulch, offer entertainment opportunities galore.

As Affinity Regional Vice Presi-dent and General Manager Scott Nelson put it, “Our commitment to providing a quality experience at our Black Hawk properties has never been stronger and we look forward to building the valued re-lationships with our guests.”

By Linda JonesOn July 26, a beauti-

ful Saturday afternoon - between the quick rain-storms blowing over - the 11th annual Peak to Creek Rotary Duck Race floated its way down North Clear Creek in Black Hawk. The City of Black Hawk had agreed to close Main Street and the Mardi Gras Casino filled it with music and food. Duck race head-quarters occupied the Mardi Gras patio and attracted quite a crowd, with many “adopting” a duck in the Citizens Race, hoping to win the Grand Prize of $1,000.

Residents of sev-eral states gath-ered on the river walk alongside the Mardi Gras to watch the two rac-es; the Sponsor’s Race, featuring the large 8-inch ducks wearing sunglasses and the Citizen’s Race, where endearing little blue, yellow and pink ducks lazily meander down the creek. In the main race, the winning duck’s number tracked it, via computer, to adopter Ed Vermillion from Limon. Ed had stopped by race headquar-ters to join the fun and adopted one

duck, but it paid off handsomely for him. He went home $1,000 richer. Other prizes were won by adopt-ers across Colorado and three prize winners were from other states, two from Illinois and one from Ala-bama.

In the Sponsor’s Race, each ca-sino sponsor is represented by one large duck and The Lodge duck looked like a sure winner. It floated

a true course down the middle of North Clear Creek and was well ahead of the rest of the flock until almost the finish net, when it was caught in a w h i r l p o o l and swirled helplessly as several oth-er sponsor ducks sailed by. The M o n a r c h fowl won the S p o n s o r ’ s Race.

The deco-rated duck fleets this year were

unusually creative and several of them deserve special mention. Lady Luck reproduced a rafting scene, complete with popular brews on-board for après-rafting. Sara-toga tapped into popular culture, creat-ing Madonna, Prince, Mi-chael Jack-son, Cyndi Lauper and Boy George l o o k a l i k e s . Monarch’s clev-er duck fleet held a win-ning hand; big playing cards held by their ducks created a Royal Straight Splash. Mardi Gras created The Quacking Dead, including some

Eventsgnarly zombies. Competition for the Best Dressed Fleet trophy was spirited, but the winner was the Isle Casino Hotel’s Wizard of Oz fleet. Dorothy carried Toto and the Tinman, Scarecrow and Lion ac-companied her; the Wicked Witch menaced the group. The innovative diorama of Jurassic Park, created by the IGT crew, included dinosaurs (of course) which drew all the kids’ eyes and even a ranger is his official park vehicle.

This year’s race was a financial winner for the youth projects of the Peak to Peak Rotary. These include sponsoring the Interact club, a ser-vice club, in Gilpin High School, sponsoring students for leadership camps from both Gilpin and Ned-erland High Schools, giving scholar-ships to both high schools and other awards. Colorado History

By Rosemary Fetter

With the publishing in-dustry in decline, it’s become harder for Col-orado history buffs to

find affordable and easily acces-sible books on local history. Enter the “Images of America” series, which can be found anywhere from Amazon.com to Walgreens. Published by Arcadia in Charles-ton, S.C., Images has carved a niche in a certain market, pub-lishing thousands of books on lo-cal history. Originally, the quality of photographs left a lot to be de-sired, but Arcadia has come a long way in the last few years.

The books all look somewhat alike, with the same dimensions and a sepia-toned photo relating to the topic on the cover. Not to be dismissed, these ubiquitous paperbacks each tell the story, primarily through historic pho-tos with some explanatory text, of a neighborhood, a landmark, an ethnic community, local archi-tecture or hundreds of other top-ics sometimes given short shrift in other history books. A lot de-pends on the talents of the sto-ryteller, which varies, along with the quality of photos, always black and white. The three publications listed below are par-ticularly well done.

Denver’s Historic HomesBy Amy Zimmer

Zimmer is a tal-ented historian who also has published an Arcadia book on Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Her treatment of historic homes is very pro-fessional, although somewhat esoteric for those not famil-iar with architectural particulars, (A glos-sary of popular styles with short descrip-tions would have been helpful, as well as an index.) To her credit, Zimmer fo-cuses as much on the owners as she does on the houses, which makes the book more interesting. Photos

include homes long demolished, like Silver King Horace Tabor’s mansion at 17th and Broadway, where his first wife, Augusta, lived out her life minus the errant hus-band. Some of these spectacular structures are still standing, al-though many have been repur-posed. The elegant domain of so-ciety queen Louise Hill at Ninth and Sherman, for example, now serves as law offices. Tweet Kim-ball’s glorious castle in Sedalia is now a museum and performing arts venue and the elegant Grant-Humphreys mansion, now owned by the Colorado Historical Soci-ety, is an event venue. Apartment and commercial structures are occasionally included, as well as drawings and cityscapes.

Irish DenverBy Dennis Gallagher, Tom Noel and James Patrick Walsh

Irish Denver is by far one of the best books on Denver history Arcadia has produced, perhaps it because it was written by three college professors who are also excellent writers. Denver City Au-ditor Dennis Gallagher and Colo-rado historian Tom Noel are local celebrities known for their sharp

wit and comprehensive knowl-edge of local history, while Jim Walsh is founder of the Romero Theater Troupe, which brings nontraditional political history to the general public. Longer on text

than many Images of America books, Irish Denver is fun to read and eloquently tells the success story of Colorado Irish and their wonderful leg-acy.

As the authors tell it, the first Irish Coloradans were miners in Nevada-ville (near Central City) and Leadville. Some, known as ter-riers, worked on the railroads. In the early days, Irish women who worked out of the home were usu-ally domestics. By 1900, however, the Irish population in Denver had soared, and successful Irish businessmen were making their mark, such as John Kernan Mullen, founder of the Colorado Milling

and Eleva-tor Company. Irish immi-grant Thomas Patrick Walsh became a m u l t i - m i l -lionaire with his gold dis-covery at the Camp Bird Mine in the San Juan M o u n t a i n s . Tom Walsh enterta ined P r e s i d e n t Howard Taft at his Wol-hurst man-sion and p u r c h a s e d the Hope Diamond for his daughter, Evalyn Walsh McLean.

The book also delves into the his-

tory of the Irish labor movement, particularly the United Mine Workers and Irish widow Mother Jones, a fiery 80-year-old labor leader. The Irish Catholic Church

in Denver also figures prominent-ly, as do the Irish Catholic politi-cians like former Mayor Tom Cur-rigan and former governors Steve McNichols and Bill Owens.

Denver’s Washington ParkBy Sarah O. McCarthy

One of the city’s finest remind-ers of late 19th and early 20th cen-tury Denver, the Washington Park neighborhood is distinctive both in architecture and popula-tion. Designated one of the “Great Public Spaces in America” by the American Planning Association (2012), the park was primarily designed by architect Reinhard Schuetze. Wash Park opened in 1899, a glowing example of Mayor Robert Speer’s “City Beautiful” efforts. Allegedly, the twin lakes were originally a buffalo wallow.

Although the author does not make this clear (a map would have been helpful), the neighbor-hood can be divided between the eastern and western sides with Downing Street as the dividing line. Each side has its own distinct characteristics and neighborhood association.

The Park area was originally part of South Denver, which an-

nexed to Denver in 1894 after the Silver Crash of 1893. One of the city’s most eco-logically conscious neighborhoods, Wash Park has for the most part stayed true to its original plan. Archi-tecture is chiefly bun-galow style, craftsman and Italianate, with a few Denver Squares thrown in for good measure.

This book is well written and informa-tive, and provides impressive photos of the area, including a 1920s aerial of the park. An index would have been useful, but these are rare in Im-ages publications. Ac-cording to the book’s biography, the author is a 30-year Washing-ton Park “activist.”

Trail’s End

espite earn-ing a degree in dentistry at the age of 20 from

Pennsylvania College, John Hen-ry Holliday is best known in history as a gambler and a killer. Surprisingly, while in Colorado, he never killed anyone.

“Doc” Holliday, hav-ing been diagnosed with tuberculosis, came west for his health in 1873. He spent time in New Mexico and Texas where he made gambling his sole source of income. It was in Texas, in January 1875, that Hol-liday became involved in the first of many gunfights, a shootout with Charles Austin, owner of a popular Dallas saloon. While Austin was not killed, Holliday was nonetheless run out of town.

Following this episode, Holli-day made his first trip to Colorado, traveled the well-known gambling circuits, often staying at Army out-posts along the way. In the sum-mer of 1875 he was living in Den-ver under the alias “Tom Mackey.” He found work as a faro dealer for Charles Foster at the infamous Bab-bitt House, located at 357 Blake St. It was here that Holliday got into a heated argument with Bud Ryan, a well-known gambling tough. The argument turned deadly when both men drew knifes. (Denver had a strict gun ordinance at the time.) Eyewitnesses said Ryan drew first, where upon Holliday then drew his knife from his breast pocket. In the deadly knife fight, Holliday quickly gained the upper hand and managed to slash Ryan a few times. While his wounds were serious, Ryan did recover.

However, the ensuing police in-vestigation resulted in uncovering Holliday’s true identity.

The Denver Republican report-ed the finding in a bit of yellow jour-nalism: “The ‘Doc’ had taken the name of ‘Tom Mackey.’ He is a qui-et, modest man, with a smile that is childlike and bland; he is generally regarded as very inoffensive, but one night he electrified the town by nearly cutting off the head of Budd [sic] Ryan, a well known Denver gambler. ‘Doc’ Holliday, alias ‘Tom Mackey, is a little better known in Denver [now].”

With his identity revealed, Hol-liday left Denver, following the

gambling circuit to Pueblo. There, he found employment dealing faro at the local saloons. By February

1876, he had moved on to the rich gold digs at Deadwood, S.D. Evidently things did not work out for Holliday in Deadwood, as he soon returned to the gambling circuit. After short stints in Colorado and Wyoming, Holliday was back in Texas by 1887, where he

met famed law-man, Wyatt Earp, at Fort Griffin, Texas.

H o l -liday and Earp formed a unique fr iendship, that of alleged gunman and lawman. It was also at Fort Grif-fin that Holliday met Mary Katha-rine Harony, better known in history as “Big Nose Kate.” She would become Holliday’s longtime paramour. Holliday and Big Nose Kate left with Earp for Dodge City, Kan., where the lawman had ac-cepted the position of as-sistant city marshal. Earp served under famed law-man, Charlie Bassett.

In the summer of 1878, Earp was lured into a trap by Ed Morrison whom Earp had dealt with pre-viously. Morrison, backed by two dozen angry armed men, taunted Earp to pull his gun. Holliday rushed to the scene and with his help, the two calmed the situation. Earp would al-ways credit Holliday with saving his life.

Holliday intended to do the same, if need be, on that infamous day of Oct. 29, 1881. The previ-ous year, Holliday, along with Big Nose Kate, had followed his friend to the new mining camp of Tombstone, Ariz. Holli-day’s help was instrumen-tal that day. Earp was the only one uninjured in the

gunfight, while Holliday and Earp’s brothers were only slightly wound-ed.

Several years after the gunfight, Big Nose Kate wrote of Holliday’s reaction after his role in the O.K. Corral gunfight. She said that when Holliday came back to their room, he sat on the bed, wept, and said, “That was awful - awful.”

After a preliminary hearing, it was determined that the

Earps and Holliday had acted within

their duty as law-men and no

charges were filed.

Following the murder of Morgan Earp, Wyatt Earp sought his own jus-tice and left T o m b s t o n e

in what would become known

as the “Vendetta Ride.” At his side, al-

though his illness had advanced, was Holliday.

With warrants out for their arrest, the two de-cided to split paths and rejoin at a later date.

They would never meet again. Holliday was back in Denver

when, on May 15, 1882, he was ar-rested on the Arizona warrant for his involvement in the murder of Frank Stilwell, during the Ven-detta ride. Famed law-man, Bat Masterson, now a U.S. deputy marshal, managed to secure the release of Hol-liday. Master-son escorted H o l l i d a y to Pueblo, where he was released on a surety bond. Mas-terson met with Colorado Gov. Frederick Walker Pitkin on Holliday’s behalf. The governor denied the Arizona extradi-tion request, stating that Colorado had its own warrant for Holliday’s arrest, on illegal gam-bling charges, which were later dropped.

Holliday returned the favor by aiding Masterson in the right-of-way railroad war, known as the “Royal Gorge War.” The war lasted over two months before Masterson, with Holliday at his side, negotiated a settlement.

Despite his advanced tubercular condition, Holliday returned to the high altitude of Leadville, where

he became involved in his last gunfight. In September

1884, Holliday, deal-ing faro in Hyman’s

saloon, was con-fronted by local gambler, Billy Allen. Heated words were e x c h a n g e d and when Al-len pulled his pistol, Holli-day fired two shots, hitting

Allen in the arm and wrist.

Holliday left Leadville, pos-

sibly for the me-dicinal qualities of the

hot springs at Glenwood Springs. However, his tuberculosis was too advanced for any

possibility of a cure. Famed gunman Holliday died in

bed on the morning of Nov. 8, 1887. He was 36.

His body was taken up the steep hill above town to Linwood Cem-etery where he was quietly buried at 4 p.m. that same day. Today, a new tombstone marks what is believed to be Holliday’s final resting spot.

Green no lon-ger just describes a vibrant color of nature; now it’s a way of thinking and living. What does it mean to be living green? Does it mean to be thrifty and live simply? Does it mean to respect and protect our environment? I believe the answer is “yes” to these questions.

Living green involves sim-plicity, moderation, and re-spect. First of all, I think it means to avoid extravagance and to live more simply. Don’t collect stuff that you may never use or buy things just because they are on sale – unless it is something basic like toilet pa-per that doesn’t expire.

Going green also is an invita-tion to recycle, become thriftier and respect our environment.

Don’t just dump unwanted clothes or household items – think cre-atively how to pro-tect our environ-ment by recycling them or donating them instead of causing more car-bon emissions by dumping them in the trash. Take items to a thrift store, a charity that accepts dona-tions, or list them

on www.freecycle.org, a green website where people give (and get) stuff for free in their own towns.

RecyclingYou probably will feel very

green, as I do, when you dis-cover innovative ways to fix or recycle something instead of trashing it. Don’t toss out that spare eyeglass case. It can be

used to protect your jewelry in your suitcase. Or hold those crochet hooks that are roll-ing around in a drawer. These things will fit nicely and neatly into that case. It can also make a dandy manicure kit or emer-gency first aid or sewing kit.

Got an old shower curtain? Even if it’s no longer good enough for its original purpose, there are several ways to extend its l life. Use it as a protective tarp when painting indoors or to cover your patio furniture or barbecue next winter. Or keep it in the trunk of your car for

an impromptu pic-nic tablecloth or to cover the ground when you have roadside emergen-cies.

Starting your seeds indoors in easy, do-it-yourself growing pots made from recycled toi-let paper rolls. To make these card-board pots, simply bend and fold one end of a trimmed tube to create a

bottom. Fill the rolls with enough dirt or potting soil. Pack the tiny filled plant-ers in a plastic container and tend them gently until they’re ready to transfer outside or into a planter. Bonus: You can plant the rolls directly in the ground—just open the bottom and the rest will disintegrate into the soil with time.

If you have odds and ends of paper, used greet-ing cards, sewing scraps, and small boxes, donate them to a local preschool. Teachers can reuse them for children’s craft proj-ects.

Simple FixesGot a squeaky door or

sticky drawer? Gently ap-ply a little cooking spray on the hinges or drawer slides then work the door or drawer back and forth to distribute the “lubri-cant.” Wipe away any drips.

Use mayonnaise to get rid of white water rings on wood furniture. Make sure the area is completely dry then spread enough full-fat mayon-naise on the spot. Let it sit for several hours, even overnight. Now wipe it clean, and buff with a soft clean cloth.

Green no longer just a color
