Devotional thought A simple meal becomes a feast... Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, thanked God for them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and had enough, and the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of what was left over. (Luke 9:16-17) It was a simple, frugal meal. Bread and fish, although adequate, would hardly be described as haute cuisine. But there was plenty – enough to fill more than five thousand people. Everyone was satisfied. There were even leftovers. Blessed by God, five small loaves of bread and two fish became a meal for a hungry multitude, and in the sharing of it a simple meal became a feast. If you are in need of spiritual food, God supplies it in abundance in his word. In the Bible we receive the bread of life to fill and nourish our hungry souls. Blessed by God, his word becomes a feast for us – especially when we share it with others. Lord, through your word may I be blest, 0 nourish me, your humble guest, with bread of life here given; may by this word my faith prevail, so that its fruit will never fail till I serve you in heaven. CONTENTS...

Many years ago I decided to make chocolate fudge and take it to work to share with my colleagues for morning tea. I was about to go on an 8 month long overseas holiday and wanted to do something for the staff to say thank you for being great work mates. Now, 7 years later, after no contact, I was remembered by one of those same colleagues as the ‘special fudge girl’. That simple act of taking something to share with others has been remembered over many years. Our devotion opposite reminds us that Jesus used a simple meal of two fish and five loaves of bread to feed thousands (and with leftovers!). Small deeds add up and small deeds are remembered long after you have forgotten you even did them. This is why our theme for this month is ’Small deeds, Big universe’. To remind us that even in this big universe, small deeds do matter. They make a difference to the person you are helping, and are likely making a much bigger impact than you even thought possible. To fit with our theme we have our very own astronomer Neil Walter writing for us about International Astronomy Day. We also have a little bit of information to get us excited about our ‘Surprise the World’ Challenge which will be starting in May. Thank you for taking the time to read and I hope you enjoy this edition of the @Glynde. Fleur Kupke

*Hi! Our theme for this month’s @Glynde is “Small deeds, big universe”. Some people think that small deeds aren’t worth doing, because the universe is so big, and well, in the final analysis, small deeds aren’t significant. That’s not the way that Jesus saw it, though! A beautiful old story tells of how Jesus, after his Ascension into heaven, was surrounded by the angels who began to enquire about his work on earth. Jesus told them about his birth, life, preaching, death and resurrection, and how he had accomplished the salvation of the world. The angel Gabriel asked, “Well, now that you are back in Heaven, who will continue your work on earth?” Jesus said, “While I was on earth, I gathered a group of people around me who believed in me and loved me. They will continue to spread the Gospel and carry on the work of the Church”. Gabriel was perplexed. “You mean Peter, who denied you thrice and all the rest who ran

away when you were crucified? You mean to tell us that you left them to carry on your work? Well, what’s plan B, then? And what will you do if this plan doesn’t work?” Jesus said, “I have no other plan — it must and will work.” Truly, Jesus has no other plan than to depend on the efforts of his followers! *Sometimes we feel that our individual efforts to share the good news of Jesus are, well, insignificant. Yet Jesus has entrusted the spread of the good news of God’s love, and His forgiveness through Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross, to us his followers. In the months of May and June, we are going to focus on how we each can make a difference for the Lord in our daily life. Over five weeks we will focus on ways in which we can “Surprise the World” by living lives which can provoke questions from the people around us and make a difference for the Lord. To do this, we need

to develop new habits, habits that invite and promote questions from the people around us. Michael Frost in this book Surprise the World focuses on five habits that are summed up in the acronym BELLS. Each of the letters of this word is the first letter of one of these habits: Bless Eat Listen Learn Sent For example, the first habit is that of blessing at least three people each week: one of these is to be a member of your church, one of these is to be person who is not, and the last one can be from either group…. This habit involves us asking ourselves each week, each day: “Who can I bless today By a word of affirmation, Or by an act of kindness, Or by a gift?” By committing yourself to even just this one habit, you will be committing yourself to living a questionable life, a life that may provoke questions from the people around you about who you are, and why you are the way you are. And that’s by developing just one of the five habits! *Watch out for publicity about this five week “Surprise the world CHALLENGE”, which will be happening after Easter. Then each Sunday during the five week period in May and June, one of these habits will be focused on in worship. And then during the week, you will be invited to be part of a Mid-week Small Group where we will chat together about implementing these habits in our lives.

You and I can make a difference in this big world. We may feel small and insignificant, but Jesus has entrusted you and me to spread the good news of God’s love, His forgiveness, and a changed life led and guided by God’s Spirit in us. He wants to use each of us as his salt and light in this world (Matt. 5:13-16). There is no Plan B!! *One final thing: Easter has just passed. Please remember this time as we followed Jesus from the Mount of Olives and his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, to the Last Supper on the Thursday night, to his suffering and death for us on Good Friday, and to God’s resurrection of Jesus from the dead on Easter Sunday. Holy Week is a journey with Jesus. *May God bless you and me as we each live questionable lives, lives that provoke questions from the people around us, and as we reach out into our community with the Good News of God’s love, and His forgiveness through Jesus. May God bless us as we “reveal and celebrate God’s love, so that all may know Jesus and worship God through him”. Pastor Wayne

Acts of service and kindness are such a blessing to our community, and this month I wish to simply thank all those people who are going above and beyond to help our church community in so many ways. Some of them may seem small, but they have a big impact on all our lives. They tie us together and help our church nurture and sustain our mission that all may come to know Jesus. Firstly, the kitchen upgrade is almost finished. David Stock has done an amazing job of coordinating this project and ensuring that each trade and stage has happened according to plan. Please take the time to thank him personally for his generous contribution of time and effort. It will be wonderful to use this new facility and to be able to have improved hospitality for all our regular activities and special events. In particular, the servery into the hall will make our Sunday coffees that much easier, and I am sure that trying out the new dishwasher will be a great experience.

Thank you to everyone who managed to work around the pre-polling and polling day arrangements at Glynde. Who would have thought the pre-polling would have been so busy? The popularity of Glynde for pre-polling caught everyone by surprise and a very special thanks to Linden Huxtable for liaising with the Electoral Commission, the political parties and all the church groups as well as Lutheran Community Care over this time. Thank you too for all the extra work that Lyall Kupke did to help make this time as smooth as possible, including traffic management. It also showed the capacity of our church facilities to be a truly multi-functional building, with so much of the space being used simultaneously during this time. We have been blessed with a fantastic sermon series on the Lord's Prayer - thank you Wayne and Henry for your preaching and encouragement to us all in our journeys of faith. Lord's Prayer off by heart - a wonderful life-long blessing. Some items from the executive team for your interest: Lutheran Community Care have requested information from us in relation to

the extent of the costs of the major redevelopment project completed last year that specifically relate to their use of the building. This amount will then form the cap for the tax deductible donations that can be made to LCC in the future. We are seeking confirmation of these costs from the builder, Marshall and Brougham. More information will be given about this to you in the coming weeks.

Thanks to the Cross Cultural Ministry grant, Barb Mattiske's hours in the Cross Cultural Outreach role has been extended to 20 hours per week from late March.

An appeal has been made for a donated car for Sudanese ministry - if you can help, please let us know

We are preparing a policy for payment for relief organists for the times when our regular organist(s) are not available. If you wish to see a copy, please let me know.

I pray that you were blessed through Holy Week and Easter. Shalom,

Magnolias Outing! Our first outing as a group was on the 9th March, visiting and touring the David Roche House museum at 241 Melbourne St, North Adelaide. We were welcomed with coffee and home-made biscuits. David Roche was an amazing man who collected antiques, paintings and objects d’art over his life time and has preserved these for future generations. The home is wonderfully maintained with exquisite furnishings, furniture, carpets etc. The carpets, wallpaper and furnishings were hand made especially for each room. All the walls were covered with his much loved and favourite pieces. The wallpaper was actually hand painted! David bred and kept approximately 40 dogs in sound proof kennels and had five people caring for them. He improved the breed of Afghan Hounds in Australia. He also judged dogs here and all around the world. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday. Other planned outings for the year will be a visit to the Guide Dog Home, Lobethal Archives, Onkaparinga Woollen Mills, Cedars/Hahndorf and the Christmas Break-up Luncheon—suggestions for the venue and others are always welcome. We also welcome anyone who has time available to join us. Val Matters and Clarice Seeliger

International Astronomy Day “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1 (NIV) I recall being interested in the natural world from an early age. I had several of the How & Why Wonder Book series including The Moon, The Stars, & Dinosaurs (of course!). That fascination persisted into teenage and adult life, developing an interest in birds, spiders and plants. These interests led to several camping trips with like-minded friends and interest groups. In the bush at night, the sight of a dark, clear sky is astonishing. It keeps you awake until your eyes just won’t stay open any more. Some people say that their interest in astronomy started by seeing the planet Saturn through a telescope, witnessing the magnificent rings for themselves, and while I agree that it’s an amazing sight, for me it was the cover of an edition of Time Magazine showing a Hubble Space Telescope image of the Eagle Nebula in the constellation of Serpens. Also called “The Pillars of Creation” (see opposite), this picture grabbed my imagination (each “pillar” is over 4 light years high!), and I knew that I had to find out more about “space”. I joined the Astronomical Society of South Australia, and regularly attended their meetings. I bought and read as many books on astronomy as my budget would permit, and eventually bought my first telescope. A word of warning here to anyone considering such a purchase….don’t expect to see wonderful coloured spectacles of galaxies, nebulae or planets…you will be disappoint-ed! Such things are the result of careful photographic imagery, and are not available to the human eye through a telescope. After several years using the scope for what we call “visual observing” I have lately ventured into the world of astrophotography, and while still a beginner in this area, I’m excited by the prospect of taking images which, while nothing like the standard of the Hubble, will still be acceptable to put on the fridge (or even the odd church calendar!) The interest in astronomy has inevitably also drawn me into the realm of cosmology…black holes, the birth and death of stars, and many other weird and wonderful aspects of the universe that have become a significant part of my reading. This also leads into questions of the origin, nature and purpose of the universe, its creation and its destiny. I have to admit that such topics do tend to put faith to the test. Belief in God or gods stemmed from a time when one could only assume that the Earth was the centre of all creation, and that we were the sole focus of the creator’s intentions. But we now know that the universe is unimaginably large. With our current capabilities it would take over a hundred thousand years just to travel to the nearest star, two billion years to traverse our galaxy, which is just one of billions! And all this is ever changing. Stars are dying, new ones born in every direction. You are inevitably led to questions of purpose, and what this vast expanse has to do with our relationship with God and His ultimate future for His people. I have a feeling that it will be beyond our wildest imagination. - Neil Walter

The Little Things... A couple of weeks ago at our Parenting Course we discussed the 5 love languages. Time Words Touch Thoughtful presents Kind actions We spoke about how every person carries with them an emotional tank and the way people treat and speak to you either fills your tank or drains it! My grandson has also shared with me how at school they talk about how they can fill or empty the emotional “buckets” that each of them have with them. He did also tell me, “But Grandma, you can’t see them.” For many who come to Glynde, this is something they have never heard of and comes as something new to learn and understand – and – let’s face it, we all want our emotional tanks to be full! And we know it is often with something really simple and small that we either hurt or build someone up… A simple smile can be a gift to someone who is hurting… the touch on a shoulder can show you care… a flower can show your concern for someone… listening with your whole being can be a precious gift… remembering someone’s name can tell them “you matter to me” Just as easily we can drain someone’s emotional tank by saying a hurtful word, turning our back, not really listening, or by an expression, something just as simple and small.

From our

Cross Cultural

Coordinator...

Each of these actions are so small, but each is huge as to how it affects someone! God gives us the opportunity of using and sharing these love languages. They are so important for us during our mid week ministries. Listening, showing it by your eyes, even though the language is hard to understand, and reflecting with them as they talk can open up a person’s whole life story. A simple touch or hug to show you care when life is hard, is not hard to do, but can open the door of meaningful and deep discussion. Many of our families struggle with life in Adelaide, just as we do… many do not have any family to talk with. We, here at Glynde can become their family, and just as we love and care for our families, we can love and care for these families through the little things we do. Fridays after our Parenting course and English class are becoming larger and larger – we keep adding more tables to our coffee area! What a joy that we can

be there to do the little things, to provide coffee and cake, to listen, to laugh, to cry, to provide assistance when we can – and to share God’s love through our friendships. Over the past few weeks there have been many God moments. How blessed are we that God is using this place, you and me, to be a part of it. May we, through the simplest of actions and words fill not only each other’s emotional tanks, but with God helping and living in us – fill the emotional tanks of those who come here. And, it isn’t just on Fridays, it’s at Playgroup, at Mainly Music, at English class and at worship and study times. It’s when Glynde prays for each other and for our ministries. So, please continue to pray, please continue to care, please continue to smile and touch a shoulder or give a flower!

Australia first observed ‘Harmony Day’ on 21 March 1999. Carrying the message ‘Everyone belongs’, Harmony Day encourages Australians of all ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds to participate in their community, get to know one other, understand and trust each other, respecting our cultural and religious differences. Acknowledging each other and our diversity helps us to grow as a community and as individuals, and in appreciating the world in which we live. Christians can support these goals. As I wrote in my 2017 message for Harmony Day, Jesus called his followers to show the way in being good neighbours to all those around them, just as God sends the sunshine and rain to everyone regardless. In Deuteronomy God tells the people of Israel, “You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 10:19) How, then, are relationships across ethnic, cultural, political and religious divides going in your neighbourhood? Such relations might not be as acrimonious in Australia and New Zealand as in some other parts of the world, but we still have some way to go before our societies know complete harmony. Many things still divide us. Deeply rooted suspicions and prejudices remain. Too often we hear people talk in ways or do things that denigrate others, and we remain silent, or even join in. So we

mustn’t give up on promoting goodwill, understanding and tolerance. It matters. Of course there have always been people who see the world differently to us, with a different set of rules to live by. We can feel threatened by these differences, if we let them. It makes all the difference when we make the effort to know who that other person really is by listening to their story and appreciating their experiences. Just as nowadays we have learned to enjoy food from all over the world, we can also learn to appreciate the colour and flavour each person brings to our community. There will be things that perplex us, or with which we cannot agree, particularly in matters of faith, but we can still learn to value each other as human beings. How does faith in Jesus help us do this? Jesus clearly showed that love for our neighbour does not require us to agree with them on everything. Yet God’s love is for all people. Obeying his Father, Jesus laid down his life for us. St Paul says that when he did that we were sinners, God’s enemies. That act of love for us, which we do not deserve, is why we love and serve others. Whether or not we agree with others’ beliefs and actions, God’s action for us obligates us to love and serve them. Each person is God’s special creation. We are to treat each one with care and respect.

17

Please join me in the following prayers for Harmony Day, and feel free to add your own. Prayers Lord our God, we confess to you our fail-ure to live well with others. We have failed to show hospitality to strangers, about whom we are often ready to believe the worst. We have judged them according to ugly caricatures and expected them to meet higher standards than we expect of ourselves.

Help us to be generous in the allow-ances we make for people of different cul-tures, accepting that there are logical and legitimate ways of doing things that are different to our ways. Help us to be initiators of friendship with people of difference, open to learning to understand why they think and do as they do, and open to being changed by them.

We have been insensitive to others and hurt them by what we have said and done. Help us to remember that you are the creator of every person, that you love every person and desire us to treat all persons with dignity.

Help us, we pray: to remember that even if we are convinced that we are speaking your truth, and convinced that the time is right to speak boldly, you want us to act in love and not out of self-righteousness;

to recognise situations in which your will is not clear, and to participate constructively in discussions about the best way forward;

to find the wisdom to know when to speak up and when to stay silent, and find the right words for every occasion;

to have the courage, discernment and self-control we need to engage well with those with whom we disagree;

to guard and strengthen our faith as we interact with people of other faiths and none; and

to deepen our knowledge and understanding of our faith so we can more effectively speak the gospel.

Lord our God, we also pray that the freedoms of thought, belief, speech, conscience and association may spread, take hold and be valued and defended in all places where there is now discrimination, intolerance and persecution;

that wherever these freedoms are enjoyed, people will exercise them responsibly, with due regard for their fellow citizens;

that we may stand against influences that lead us to unnecessary violence and war;

and that Christians everywhere will come to understand freedom as freedom to die to self and to serve others, just as Jesus served us, and died and rose again for us.

I love cricket!

I love the Australian Cricket Team. They have been a source of much inspiration and excitement over my lifetime.

An institution that has been central to Australian culture for so many good reasons. But like many, I am

shattered by the recent ball tampering events on the South African tour.

Trust with the public that's built up with history over generations, has been suddenly shattered by the small

actions of a few…..The Christian Church shares similarities with this!

The church for many centuries has been the centre of culture. But we too have lost the trust of the community…..

Scandals and abuses (sexual/physical/emotional) have shattered trust. Our history of forcing socio-political views

on others outside the church erodes trust. 2013 research suggests 8% of Australians attend church at least

monthly. That means 92% don’t!

How should the Australian Cricket Team regain the public’s trust? What should Christians do for people to trust

us? Why should people believe what we say and do? This is our missional context!

In May there’s an opportunity to practise (as a community) forming some habits that may ‘Surprise the World’!

A chance to practise identifying as ‘a sent one’ to our missional context. See Pastor Wayne’s article for Michael

Frost’s ‘Five Habits of Highly Missional People’.

I think habits are harder to start than to stop! At work, I was part of FebFast where I gave up chocolate for

February. I completed the challenge - but I found it easier to stop eating chocolate than I have to start a habit of

regular exercise!

Habits are hard to start! That’s why we’re going to

attempt the challenge of forming these BELLS habits

together!

For five weeks in May/June we’ll focus in worship and in

small groups on learning to live these habits. Our

'Surprise the World' Challenge!

Look out for more information in the coming weeks!

So for every church attender, there are 11 others! Who

are your eleven?! How well do you know them?
