Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
Gloria a Dios en las alturas y en la tierra paz a los hombres de buena voluntad.
Amidst the beautiful readings at the Christmas Masses is a
reading from Saint Paul to his protégé. Saint Paul reminds Titus
that God has given us a gift in the person of Jesus Christ. This gift
represents God’s active presence in our lives and in our world.
This gift redeems us from evil and death, it purifies us as God’s
people. This gift comes with an expectation: that we allow it to
transform us into Christ’s image;“eager to do what is good.”

From the Deacon’s desk...
(AP) A pr iest and former slave who served in Chicago, western Illinois and Missouri in the late 1800s is a step closer to becoming a saint.
Father Augustus Tolton was the first Catholic priest in the U.S. public-ly known to be black in 1886. Born a slave in Missouri, his family eventual-ly reached the free state of Illinois. When he wished to pursue studies for the priesthood, Tolton was reject-ed by every American seminary to which he applied and eventually en-
rolled in Rome’s Pontifical Urban University. Expecting to be sent to an African mission, Tolton returned to the Chica-
go area to serve the area’s African-American population. He died in 1897, amid an infamous Chicago heat wave. WGEM-TV reports his remains were exhumed from St. Peter’s Ceme-tery in Quincy on Saturday. They will be examined for historical verification purposes.
(Tolton , continued…) Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Springfield Diocese was at the cemetery Saturday. He says having someone from the local area become a saint and show others how to be Christian is “a great thing.” The late Cardinal Francis George of Chicago submitted Tolton as a can-didate for sainthood in 2010. A formal report documenting his life, known as a “postitio,” was submitted to the Vat-ican in 2014, and is awaiting a ruling from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Deacon John’s Note: Especially as our celebration of God humbling himself to share in our humanity is ongoing, perhaps there is substantial value in spending time to reflect upon the paragraphs below. They are taken from a biography of Augustine Tolton’s life authored by the Reverend Roy Bauer of the Dio-cese of Quincy, Illinois. When Stephen Elliot, the Missouri farmer who with his wife owned the Tolton family, [Martha Jane (Mother), Gus (Agustus Tolton), and Gus’ sib-lings] died, he left some debts. To settle the estate, the administra-tor had all his assets appraised. Among the slaves listed were: one black woman, 32 years old, named Martha, $59; one black girl, 15 years old, named Ann, $75; one black boy, 12 years old, named Agustus, $25; one black boy, six months old, $1. The listing also included farm ani-mals, in particular a 12 year old mare valued at $25. Adjusted for inflation, that would represent $375-$400 today. One should note that the County Administrator, and the local commu-nity through their appraisal, deemed equivalent value between a 12 year old horse and a 12 year old black boy.
