Global Sharing Day around the worldJune 1st 2014 was the 3rd ever Global Sharing Day and it was the biggest yet! The massive increase in activity and engagement with the campaign, with over 52 new partner organisations this year alone, is an incredible tesment to the growth of this new economy we are all building together.

This year, thanks to new Founding Partner Peers, we were able to have an events registration system, which worked brilliantly! We had 50 registered events, with celebrations on every continent, and many unregistered events as well!

What people say about Global Sharing Day

“I think it's a great initiative to increase awareness of the Sharing Economy. This area is obviously growing considerably and it's amazing the difference in the size and reach of organisations involved-from successful global businesses like AirBnB to small grassroots sharing organisations operating in specific local areas. I like that Global Sharing Day includes all sizes and types of sharing organisations...I think that initiatives like this one are great for spreading the word and connecting people/businesses/non-profits that are trying to achieve similar things, and no doubt encountering similar opportunities and challenges.” The Clothing Exchange, Australia

“Global Sharing Day is exactly what the Sharing Economy needs: an event to be visible by everybody, not only by people who already use Sharing Economy.” Cosmopolit Home, France

“It’s a wonderful idea that we all can engage in, even if we are organizing events around the world. It feels like we are a part of something big.”Omställningsverkstan & Kollaborativ Ekonomi Göteborg, Sweden

“At Brand Gathering we couldn’t have been happier to hear and become a part of such a great initiative. The Sharing Economy is obviously something very dear to our hearts, so seeing such a global expression of appreciation for this economy was a real joy.” Brand Gathering, UK

“I love the concept - and we believe there is far too much waste in the world! As TheRoom-Link is built on Sharing Economy principles, we want to help spread the message. It’s what we believe in!” TheRoomLink, South Africa

“It is a way to connect people to each other around sharing and generosity towards a new economy that ensures equity and access to everyone. We think it is important to take part of global initiatives through local actions.” Compartir Medellín, Colombia

“We think it’s a great initiative. Glad to be a part of it! It brings people together.”Leo Burnett, USA

“Great stuff. It’s a fun and light-hearted way to spread the word about the Sharing Economy and encourage activities both on-line and offline.” JustPark, UK

“From experience, people really enjoy sharing when they come around to it. It is just a matter of getting them to take the leap. In that sense, I think Global Sharing Day can be a great excuse for a baptism of fire.” The Sharing Bros, France

Street Share Party - Brighton, UK

The Global Sharing Day Street Party has become the event of the year in Compton Avenue, Brighton - home to Benita Matofska, Founder of The People Who Share. All generations were represented at this fest, from a baby who was a few months old to a 91 year old. From food to music, from toys to laughs - this street really know how to share!

Bringing people together on the street to share lunch on Global Sharing Day has made a huge difference. One couple had lived on the street for over 40 years - they said “it’s the first time in over 40 years that we’ve lived here that the street came together to share a meal. Now when I walk down the street people stop, smile, say hello. I’m really part of a community now” David, resident of Compton Avenue.

“[Global Sharing Day] is great! The need to share more knowledge, be open to co-creation, is something which is necessary, and needs to be talked about a lot. The Sharing Economy is something we support passionately, and the more international attention for this, the better!!”

Seats2Meet Sharing Week - NetherlandsSeats2Meet were so excited about Global Sharing Day, they decided to make a week of it! They had events each day in a different city in the Netherlands, to promote sharing, collaboration and co-working, engaging over 300 people across Holland.

“Since Seats2meet started in 2007, there has been loads that [has] made a differ-ence, too much to sum up...we share lunch, seats, on a daily basis. People have met each other here and created value together, start-ed new businesses, founded new compa-nies, [all] by sharing their knowledge.”

In Zagreb, Coworking Croatia organised an entire Sharing Festival. With over 150 people, this sharing fest had it all: swapping tables for everything from vinyls to books, from clothes to accessories, a smoothie co-creation booth and a meeting of local Sharing Economy initatives. Who could ask for more?

“[Global Sharing Day] is a great way to promote the Sharing Economy because it has a hands-on and face-to-face approach, and it’s relevant to media because of the global impact.”

Sharing Couch Challenge - Portugal

“To celebrate Global Sharing Day we challenged everyone, everywhere, to host Sharing Couches. We wanted something new, simple, that would catch people´s attention and promote sharing in our communities!”

*This refers to people that sat on the couches, exchanged toys and/or received a 48h sharing challenge card.

We Can Change The World launched a Sharing Couch Challenge, asking partners to put couches out on the street to stimulate sharing in a fun way. It was an open and free moment, for everyone that wanted to join. There were 15 partners hosting 16 couches, set on the street in 12 different cities (11 in Portugal and 1 in the Neatherlands), in 16 neighborhoods. Two of these couches also reached children, promoting a toy exchange moment. Together, they reached over 1000 people*!

The Sharing Economy focusses on sustainability across all three pillars: economic, social and environmental. Research by Co-operatives UK1 shows a correlation between happiness and sharing. The more we share, the happier we become and the more likely we are to contribute to our communities, create and innovate. By connecting people through the sharing of human and physical resources, we build resilient, cohesive self-sustaining communities, with high levels of well-being. The Sharing Economy allows resources to be used to maximum capacity, creating a circular rather than a linear economy, reducing waste and poverty. Global Sharing Day enables more and more people to discover, explore and experience the benefits of sharing, allowing this movement to gain critical mass and mainstream.

1 The Great Sharing Economy: A report into sharing across the UK, Co-operatives UK

The impacts of sharing are beautifully diverse. Here are a few examples of the amazing partners we work with and the positive impacts they deliver.

FareShare tackle the dual problems of food waste and food poverty, helping to feed over 62,200 people a day. Over the past year, FareShare’s food redistribution system has provided more than 12 million meals and helped businesses reduce CO2 emissions by 19,500 tonnes.

BlaBlaCar help people share their cars, making travel cheaper and reducing congestion and carbon emissions. Up to date, over 2 billion miles have been shared, reducing an estimated 700,000 tonnes of CO2, and saving their driv-ers an estimated £216 million every year.

GoodGym connects runners with elderly ‘coaches’ or local community projects, so that they can channel their energy into social good. Through this they tackle isolation, lonliness and neglected local projects.

Global Sharing Day is all about showcasing organisations like these, and inspiring others to join in!

Sharing Nature, Plates & Stories - London, UKAkasha Innovation stayed true to their holistic take on sustainability and filled everyone’s souls, brains and bellies in their walking, talking, story-telling and munching day of sharing! They started with a guided walk along the river Thames in Richmond, follwed by a delicious picnic and shared stories and poems (including an original poem written for Global Sharing Day!)

“We absolutely love Global Sharing Day and want to work more closely with The People Who Share in the future.”

Park Swaps - Maastricht & Groningen, NetherlandsDarpdecade combined their love of parks and sharing in two events in the Netherlands, each welcoming over 200 people! In Groningen, they held a Swap and Share in the Park, where people came together to share skills (check out the juggling!), food, stories and clothes. And in Maastricht, they organised a Pop-up Swap in the Park, helping fashion enthusiasts meet, connect and share clothes.

“The experiences of Global Sharing Day in Groningen, sparked several people to share their skills. This ignited the formation of a weekly AcroYoga Group of 20 people.”

“It is a fantastic initiative. We would love to help grow this initiative into something bigger in the future and collaborate in multiple ways and levels.”

Flash Share - Australia

In Australia, country partner, TuShare organised the world’s first Flash Share: a massive online sharing challenge! Their aim was to have 5000 itmes shared in 5 days, and with 8000 people joining in on the Flash Share - they clearly outdid themselves! James Moody, CEO TuShare

Sharing Market Fest - London, UKWhat better way to celebrate Global Sharing Day than joining a new local market and help everyone in your neighbourhood discover the Sharing Economy? That’s exactly what The People Who Share did in London! We infused the Village Green Market in Hackney with even more sharing: we brought a Share Table, a skills exchange, a clothes swap organised by SwapAholics UK, and some refreshing 99% Guiltless flavoured water tasters from MyAgora - a company that fully crowdsources the role of the CEO.

“For us, Global Sharing Day is all about letting people who already love to share celebrate and letting those who may never have heard about the Sharing Economy discover it in all its glorious diversity!”

What people think about Global Sharing Day

“This initiative is important to raise awareness to important issues forgotten so many times, like sharing, cooperation, solidarity and many forms of alternative economy that don’t require money. This ini-tiative is a creative way to keep people educated and informed about these subjects.” We Can Change The World, Portugal

“I think it is great - it totally helped me to motivate people around at my work to organise a share fest. And people who showed up really enjoyed it. There is not much happening in Vienna at the moment with raising awareness on the already existing initiatives. We could definitely see that the interest is great, the energy is high. In the case of Vienna, the Global Sharing Day helped us find each other - now the network is on with lots of new ideas for further steps.” Katarzyna Gruszka, RCE Vienna, Vienna University of Business and Economics, Austria

“I think it’s a great way to raise awareness about the Sharing Economy.” trashnothing!, USA

“Great initiative to raise awareness of the sharing economy especially in South Africa where it is still new and isn’t fully understood yet.” FindALift, South Africa

Media Features

“Global Sharing Day is an important opportunity for businesses large and small, community groups and individuals to explore a different approach to consumption, one that balances the needs of all as well as planetary limits. Our customers have responded well to Shwopping but have told us that they need to see new approaches to consumption more consistently in their lives. Global Sharing Day is raising awareness in many markets of different approaches to consumption to the benefit of us all.’’ Mike Barry, Director of Sustainability, Marks & Spencer

Global Sharing Day would not be possible without the generous support from our sponsors:

“As a champion of the UK Sharing Economy, we wanted to support Global Sharing Day, as it brings the benefits of collaborative consumption to life. For Zipcar, it was a great way to communicate our core values, and illustrate how easy we make it for people and businesses alike to get 24/7 access to cars when they need them, as part of the growing ‘Pay-As-You-Live’ economy. [Sponsoring GSD] has served to raise Zipcar’s profile in many different quarters and establish valuable relationships, which might otherwise have eluded us.” Mark Walker, General Manager UK Zipcar
