During their Spring 2013 meeting, the GPC Board Members approved a motion requiring all GPC students to provide two forms of confirmation

for co-curricular and service activities. after submitting activities and events on the GPC website, students must email the Program Coordinator confir-mation of their participation using at least one of the following: a picture/video of the event, an email from a supervisor/coordinator of the activity, or a document such as a timesheet, ticket stub, brochure, etc. they must also include a narrative outlining how the activity relates to at least one of the other GPC requirements, and explaining at least one of the following: how the activity relates to their future career or life interests, insights gained about other cultures, or global issues that came to light as a result of the experience. these narratives will help students reflect on their experiences and provide a starting point when it is time to complete the final project.

Ismail Kassim first heard about the GPC during a

classroom presentation. He felt the program aligned with his interest in being globally engaged while a student at NC State, and immedi-ately signed up. Ismail is a Chemistry/Human Biology double major, with a minor in africana studies. He first studied abroad in Perth, Western australia for the Spring 2012 semester. Ismail says that studying abroad helped him reach a new level of independence, as well as an appreciation for other cultures. During his time

abroad, he enjoyed meet-ing people from all over the world. Ismail has continued his dedication to internation-al engagement by participat-ing in a research program in Nairobi, Kenya over the summer. at NC State, Ismail has had the opportunity to interact with international students on campus, and to attend lectures about world issues, but his favorite part of the GPC has been volunteer-ing at the Study abroad Fair and sharing his experiences with prospective students. after graduation, Ismail plans to attend medical school.

spotlight on: peru eduthe Peru Spanish Language trip, led

by Professors Kay and Leonard Villa-Garcia, is one of the most popular NC State Summer Study abroad programs. this program begins with a twelve-day study tour to the Inca capital of Cuzco and surrounding villages, including the famous Machu Picchu. Students then return to Lima for a homestay with Peru-vian families and to complete NC State coursework taught by the professors. the Peru program is especially popular for GPC students, as it incorporates three different GPC components: international experi-ence, service activities (volunteering at an elementary school in Ollantaytambo), and academic coursework. Returning students have been especially enthusiastic about their experience abroad, even demon-strating a continued interest in their service project.

Last year, GPC student Katelyn Noel founded PeruEDU, a student organization dedicated to raising money to support the Peru service projects. PeruEDU currently has about twenty members, who par-ticipate in mini-fundraisers and concert events on campus. the efforts of PeruEDU members and study abroad participants have provided the elementary school with copy machines, new bathrooms, freshly painted school walls, as well as

athletic equipment and clothing. the PeruEDU membership is not limited to study abroad participants. as Katelyn says, “it’s an amazing program for stu-dents who went to study abroad in Peru, or just want to support a good cause!”

David’s advice for students considering study abroad: “Do it! There are always a million excuses not to study abroad, but

it’s something that will change you and your outlook on life. The Global Perspectives Certificate is a great way to showcase these

experiences for the professional world.“

Born and raised in a small farming community in eastern NC, spring 2011 GPC awardee David

Hawley truly understands the value of a globally aware education. While pursuing his undergradu-ate degree in Spanish Language & Literature, David took time off for a two year mission trip in North-ern Mexico, which allowed him to experience the culture, learn the language, and work directly with local individuals to address the needs of the com-munity. He later returned to Mexico on a NC State summer study abroad program before his senior

year. David considers these international experi-ences the backbone of his education at NC State, because they helped him grow as a person and taught him more about the world than he could ever have learned in a classroom. these experi-ences also helped guide him towards a career in international education. David currently works as the Front Office Manager and General advisor for the Study abroad Office, and is pursuing a Master of International Studies. He saw how international education impacted his own life, and he hopes to open the doors of the world to yet another genera-tion of students.
