Global Citizen

This is a programme whereby students and re-cent graduates volunteer to work in another country and gain a global

experience for the duration of 6-12 weeks. It of-fers the opportunity for one to

explore a new country while they work on an issue developing entrepreneurial and leadership

skills.

This programme offers the most intense learning experience as it is centered on finding solutions

to social issues. The objective is to target our country’s youth and help them enrich their edu-cation by offering them a holistic international

work experience.

As a Global citizen, you will work on a developmental project along with other partici-pants from across the globe, take ownership in an unfamiliar environment, manage your own proj-

ects and track your results. AIESEC will support you through your experience and ensure that it challenges your world view and helps you

gain a unique combination of multi-cultural, social and entrepreneurial exposure.

Global citizen profile

A potential global citizen should be open to the following criteria:

• Must be between 18 and 30 years

• Ability to afford fees, travel fare, VISA costs etc.

• Must be a tertiary student or recent graduate by 2 years

• Be open to a minimum of 6 weeks abroad at the end of November, during December and beginning of January

• Must be open to country/geo-location of the internship

• Understanding of his/her role as an ambassador of his/her home country

Financial Requirement

Programme Fee: P 600

Students who join the Global Citizen programme will have to cover their living costs, transport costs, insurance, visa fee, trav-elling and daily expenses. Food and accommodation varies ac-

cording to their specific project.

2. Selection ProcessGlobal Citizen selection process has a total of 3 rounds:

Registration Screening, Assessment Center and Interviews. After the

selection process, students officially become AIESEC ex-change participants (EP)

3. Contract & AdministrationAfter selection AIESEC signs a contract with you agreeing to the terms and conditions of the AIESEC experience. Confirmation Letter from Parents is

also required.

4. Project SelectionYou will get to select a project of your choice from the given projects from the country you

chose.

5. Outgoing Preparation Seminar AIESEC briefs you on what to expect during the

internship. It helps you to make the most of your internship and gain a complete AIESEC

experience. The seminar gives you clarity on everything that you can expect on the internship and gives students a chance to meet and learn first-hand from people who have gone through the experience.

In addition, the seminar will prepare the you for the Culture Shock that may come up while emersed in

the culture if the receiving entity.

6. Internship Experience Once you leave for the Internship Experience, AIESEC

members from the country you are visiting ensure you have a great experience. We keep also in touch

with you from Botswana. While on the internship the student prepares an impact report and a video to document the learning experience that can be

shared with others once they get back.

7. Feedback Mechanism While on the internship AIESEC provides a

feedback mechanism to students to get the best quality Experience.

8. Re-Intergration Once you are back from your internship AIESEC gives you an opportunity to share your experi-

ence with others, hone your leadership skills and take up other opportunities AIESEC has to offer

you.

AIESEC awards you a certificate of completion once you give your local committee the impact

report and videos of your experience. AIESEC gives you an opportunity to be part of events,

projects and conferences held locally.

*NB: Culture Shock is a term used to describe anxiety that may arise from arriving in a completely new environment.E.G. Feeling irritable about a new diet because of the change in food.

Last year December I had an opportunity to do a 6 week internship in Mozambique to make a positive impact in the lives of a small community called Malanga. I conducted seminars about HIV/AIDS and the impact it has on individuals, families and communities. You can never say you know enough about the illness.

Some of the community members either did not know the basics about HIV or still believed in myths and because HIV/AIDS has become an everyday subject we tend to assume that everyone is aware of everything that there is to know about the illness yet there is a majority of small communities that lack awareness about the subject. I also had a chance to visit some of the infected and affected members of the community to offer them emotional support.

I have imparted knowledge that will make someone change their behavior and make them safe.

My personality encompassed all definitions of shyness. I was timid, afraid of taking up opportunities and didn’t see the value of my life. An acquaintance of mine introduced the idea of volunteering abroad and I looked at it as a ticket to gaining all the skills I deprived myself of the opportunities to learn.I was not only under qualified for the project I chose but I’d have to travel over 2000km by bus just to get to it, that

didn’t dampen my spirit because the information seminar on exchange

explained that life begins at the end of your

comfort zone.

AIESEC in Tanzania identified a gap between the students, recent graduates of universities and the corporate world and therefore created The Bridge Project. My team and I got trained by Human Resource managers from Bank of Africa and as a result conducted relevant workshops that imparted the students with the relevant skills they would need, that will prepare them for the job market and make it easier for

recruiters to employ them. The workshops we facilitated included: Leadership & Time Management, presentation skills, Cover letter & CV’s .Just from being a facilitator I was able to: Build a network which in-cludes Bank of Africa employees, learn how to manage money, improve on personal branding & confidence, gain presentation skills, develop a global mindset & be more tolerant to cultures different from mine.

I would honestly encourage very individual to take up an exchange program with AIESEC because you learn to realize that you actually have what it takes to change the world for the better and give someone hope.

• How does AIESEC Global Citizen programme differ from other overseas intern-ship programmes?

AIESEC does not define itself as provider of internships only. Rather, AIESEC offers you many different opportunities to discover and develop your potential. Although an intern-ship abroad is an essential part of the experience you can gain in AIESEC, it is closely linked to other experiences rather than separated from them. Throughout the program, you will meet and connect with AIESECers from around the world, participate in local AIESEC conferences if they are available, and develop yourself through challenges you face during your internship. As our program is aimed at personal development through connecting with communities and AIESEC chapters abroad, you will get a unique experience with exchange participants who come from all around the world.

• What does AIESEC offer students in the Global Citizen programme?

AIESEC offers you a platform to find an internship experience of your choice. The members in the organization provide guidance and assistance throughout the course of your association with AIESEC. The members will ensure you are inducted into the organization, help you search and find the internship experience of your choice, assist you with

documents and visa processes, ensure you are fully prepared for the experience in the country you have chosen. The AIESEC host committee, country will guide and assist you once you reach the host country. The host country will make sure of the pickup, accommodation, internship experience and all other networking events with other interns

working on the project with you.

• Can me and my friend/ friends go for the same project together?

There may be a chance that two or more people can take on an AIESEC experience together but there is no guarantee that you will get the same project. AIESEC believes in diversity and we believe and encourage students to take this up alone as it helps one’s individual experience and helps you get out of your comfort zone. Therefore we strongly recommend taking up the Global Citizen Programme alone to fully appreciate this experience.

• Do I need to be fluent in X to go to an X-speaking country?

English is the international language of AIESEC. AIESEC members across the world will speak English, and the English language is the basis of a large number of AIESEC intern-ships. Because of this, proficiency in English is required to be eligible to go on most any AIESEC internship. In Central and South America the majority of internships require

proficiency in Spanish. Those in Germany often require proficiency in German. Additional language ability is an added bonus for multi-lingual applicants.
