If the current crisis (and the bushfire crisis earlier in the year) teaches us anything, it is that there is a need for us to plan for sustainable, quality, flexible learning options. The staff and students at Glenorie have shown that we can do things well no matter what the circumstances. I want to thank the parent community for their support of the procedures we instigated in these last few weeks and the cancellations we made to support the social distancing policy. Whilst we are disappointed to have cancelled many activities now deemed non-essential this term and next, we understand the importance of this. However, we will still be operational next term and learning continues in our classrooms. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our wonderful teachers for the amount of time they have spent preparing lessons and resources to enable students to participate in online learning activities from home which has been outstanding. Our fabulous office staff have continued to deal with individual parent and student enquiries with wonderful efficiency and patience. As we understand, going into next term many people may not be in a position to provide supervision to their children at home. This could be because they are delivering frontline services to the community. It is therefore important that supervision of their children is prioritised and provided by our school to ensure they can continue to carry out their work and support the continued function of society. We will continue next term to rearrange class timetables as a result of the current changes and your child may not be with their usual class teacher. We have developed a program to ensure all students, either attending school or remaining at home, have access to relevant learning opportunities. Your stage teachers will be posting the weekly work on Google Classroom each week. They will also post on Seesaw your Zoom classroom lessons with the link to join. Most parents have picked up the initial learning packs of textbooks, books and booklets this week. Only a few parents now require hard copies for this term. These packs for parents in term 2 may only consist of one or two worksheets for the week if any (these will be emailed to you), as all the work posted online will direct students to work in their textbooks, books or reading activities in Reading Eggs, Key Links or Wheelers ePlatform or Mathletics. Awards will still be presented each Friday via Zoom. Ironbarks will also be awarded to students for great work during the week. The teachers will place these in each award winner’s tote tray. We have sent out surveys this week to all parents/students to gather information about our learning-from-home programs and how you are going, as well as how we are doing. We will use this information to adjust our planning and strategies to best serve our learning community. Talking to your Children about COVID-19 “Parents shouldn’t avoid talking about the coronavirus. Not talking about something can actually make young people worry more. Take the opportunity to convey the facts and set the emotional tone. Help your children feel informed and reassured.” - Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

COVID-19 Update

As the COVID-19 situation unfolds, our school has moved to a flexible staffing plan – but this doesn’t mean a stop to learning for students or teachers.

It is therefore important that supervision of their

children is prioritised and provided by our school to ensure they can continue to carry out their work and support the continued function of society.

OOSH OOSH will continue to operate as per usual. While OOSH is operated by the P&C and OOSH sub-committee, I have continued to work with the committee to ensure continuity between the school and service. The committee has sent out a survey for vacation care. We request that anyone wishing to use vacation care during the holidays contact OOSH immediately.

School Development Day This year the Department of Education will provide schools with five professional learning (school development) days. On Monday 27th April all teachers and support staff at Glenorie will be undergoing training in G-Suites for Education. As the day is designed for staff development, no supervision will be provided for students. You will be responsible for the care and safety of your child on that day. Students who still need supervision should therefore return to school on:

Tuesday 28th April.

Cyber-safety tips

Safe passwords

Encourage your child to set passwords that are easy to remember but hard to guess. The best passwords mean something memorable to you, but wouldn’t be randomly guessed by others. Select passwords that are:

Long - the more characters your password has, the lower the probability that it can be randomly cracked.

Diverse – use a range of different characters including capital letters, numbers and special characters (like a $).

Thanks for all your support in this change of routine…we look forward to sharing many more positive learning experiences with you next term online.

Happy Holidays!

Term 1 finishes on Thursday 9th April.

Term 2 commences on Tuesday 28th April as far as we know…

Become involved in your child’s education. Enjoy learning! Lyn Pearce Principal
