catchy music... comic action... the best of g&s

For the first time ever, Brian Chatterton and Ric Trevaskis will bring two of South Australia’s best loved and longest running arts companies, Co-Opera and The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of SA, together to join forces on a stunning new take on The Mikado. W. S. Gilbert’s satire in this best known and loved of his collaborations with Arthur Sullivan was, as always, British society. This production of The Mikado has more of a Broadway treatment than a traditional approach. Titipu, the town The Mikado is set in, is more or less the equivalent of a regional centre, featuring the local council and the Three Little Maids are girls on a gap year seeing the world!

the sprit of gypsy music across the centuries

Of course, there was never a gypsy palace. How could there have been? And yet, the old tales persist about the mystical palace, appearing at the top of the hill through the midnight mists...The wild nights! The dancing! The fiddle playing! Nearly 300 years ago in Eastern Europe, hundreds of gypsy melodies were collected for the Uhrovska Collection, providing a rare and unique snapshot of a folk tradition that existed alongside the courtly music of the Baroque. In this evocative ensemble project, MCO Virtuosi director Rebecca Chan weaves a colourful and entrancing musical tapestry, tracing the spirit and energy of gypsy music across half a millennium of music. Witty dances by Telemann, virtuosic concerti by Vivaldi and Haydn and a spectacular string symphony of CPE Bach will transport you with their infectious vitality.

The concert also uses projections of relevant war images to illustrate the story.

the art of design

Alison Aplin is a multi-award winning landscape designer, the most recent in 2014. Her great passion in life is designing, so it has been a natural graduation to go from designing landscapes, to designing art forms where design is essential to the completed work. Abstract art allows this natural, albeit creative, design flow to manifest. Her mosaic wall plaques, for interior or exterior walls, are just a further example of this form.

ALOFT showcases work by two Melbourne artists, printmaker Kate Gorringe-Smith and painter Melissa Boag, and two Portland artists, painter Bernice Morrow and installation artist Rebecca Marriott. Each artist references flight or birds in a figurative or abstract way.Kate Gorringe-Smith’s project, The Flyway Print Exchange, was part of Portland’s 2015 Upwelling Festival. Melissa Boag’s recent ink and watercolour drawings of the local gannet colony were acquired for the Glenelg shire’s cultural collection.Bernice Morrow’s work continues to evolve through figurative to more abstract forms.Using natural materials, Rebecca Marriott creates sculptural forms that express the fragility and interconnectedness of life.

What lies beneath?

This exhibition features a collection of portraits of local identities, famous and infamous.Ron Penrose paints with a palette knife to create textural and lively colourful characters on canvas. His work shows an influence from many masters including Van Gogh, Dobell, Quilty and Colin Davidson. The selected works for this show all stem from this deep interest in portraiture and its validity in sourcing the truth of his subjects. Ron is also increasingly captivated by the ‘evocative’, where the power of suggestion is more alluring than recording the observable. This concept has a growing appeal for Ron as a painter and will continue to drive his practice. “The simple joy of strategically manipulating colour and texture into a personable format is something, I feel a deep affection for and one I’m proud to show.”
