His prodigious output was evident early on, when at the age of 20 he created 500 artworks whilst with the RAAF.His early exploration of the Victorian countryside, especially the Portland area, were important to his development as an artist, and is also where he met Betty, his wife-to-be, who was visiting Portland at the time of one of Jack’s excursions. Observing the “unseen”

Using the camera as the medium to observe the “unseen” in cities around the world, Kate Anderson presents an alternative to the much photographed and much loved monuments of those metropolises. The often text-based graffiti that her work depicts is found in alleyways, derelict buildings and generally in out of the way locations. The urban environments that Anderson photographs give us a close up and intimate view of the work of street artists. These are accompanied by images of everyday life along the arteries that are the lifeblood of all great cities and towns.

This display looks at the 1984 Portland 150th celebrations and the 1985 royal visit and city proclamation. In November 1984 Portland kicked off a year-long celebration for the town’s 150th anniversary commemorating the arrival of Edward Henty and the establishment of Victoria’s first permanent European settlement. Events included visiting naval vessels, a street procession, a breakfast for 2,000 people, numerous historically related events and a huge colonial ball in the transit shed at the Port. The year culminated in a visit from HRH Prince Charles, and Diana, Princess of Wales in October 1985. Whilst in Portland the royals proclaimed Portland a City, capping off a big year for Victoria’s first permanent European settlement.
