On Friday 17th May, we encourage all
students to walk to school. Those students
who catch a bus or get dropped at school will

students complete a lap they will receive a
piece of fruit, bottle of water and a sticker.
Music Lessons resume this week for all

Athletics Trials
In preparation for the upcoming athletics carnival, students will be involved in trials at school during weeks 2 and 3.
Due to the trials not being on sports days, participating students are asked to wear their sports uniform on these days.
Stage 2 trials, including Year 2 eight year olds were held on Monday, 6th May.
Stage 3 trials will be spread over two days, Thursday 9th and Friday 10th May.
Wednesday, 15th May will be the 100m age race heats and the 200m heats (for the events where they are needed). These will take place in the school grounds in the middle session from 11:45am.
Parents and carers are invited to come along and support the students in these events. All students will then return to their classes for the afternoon session.
1500m will be held on Monday, 20th May.
Northern New England Cricket trials
On Monday, 8th April, I went to
the Northern North West Trials to try to get into the team to go to the next level. The format of the trial was everybody got a batting session and two bowling
sessions to impress the selectors. The selectors watched every ball faced by every batsman and every ball faced by every bowler across two nets for six hours in the hot sun. From this process, they selected 12 players out of twenty eight to go to the North West trials in Tamworth on Thursday 2
nd
May. I got selected and went down to Tamworth for the trials. The same format was carried out except there was a Northern North West team verse Southern North West team game after. At the end of the day, I was glad to hear my name called out for the North West team. The State Carnival will be held in Wollongong in October with four days of continuous cricket. By Howie E
Principal’s Report
Congratulations to all staff and students involved in the Celtic Festival last week. This is a HUGE event for our school and wider community and a fantastic way to showcase the musical skills of students from GIPS and other Glen Innes schools. Thank you to Mrs McKean and the Celtic Committee for all their efforts in organising the event. Thank you also to Ms Mercer for organising Celtic Art.
We continue to have many successes in the area of sport, as detailed in this newsletter. Well done to all students who have participated in sporting events and congratulations to those who have represented our school recently.
Throughout next week NAPLAN assessments will be conducted for all students in Years 3 and 5. It is very important that all Year 3 and 5 students attend school everyday next week. Parents/Carers can support their children by ensuring they have breakfast before coming to school and reinforcing the message that the expectation is that they ‘have a go’ and try their best to answer questions. Although an indication of student achievement, it is important to remember that NAPLAN assessment is only one of many forms of assessments that are used to measure student achievement.

Woolworths Earn and learn is back. It is a fun and exciting way to earn great products for our school. Simply collect stickers when shopping at Woolworths and stick them on a sheet from Woolworths or the School office. Keep an eye out for our box at Woolworths or bring the completed sheets to school.

Stage 2 Captain's Cup Day
In the later stages of last term, some stage 2 students were lucky enough to participate in the NRL Captain’s Cup. The boys were involved in tackle football, whilst the girls played some league tag games. They had a
great day, learning lots of league skills and putting them into action. All students displayed pride, respect and success and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Students are to be congratulated on their wonderful behaviour and attitude!

State Swimming
Glen Innes Public School were very proud of our nine students who earned their place to represent North West at the State Swimming Carnival in Sydney on 11
th and 12
th
April. For the first time this year, the events were broadcast through YouTube, allowing staff and students to feel like they were part of the action.
The students recounted their achievements below:- The Junior Boy’s Relay team achieved a two second personal best and placed 36
th out of 40. They stated they were amazed at the swimming ability
of other students from other schools and could see how much practice they get. They were also very proud of their efforts.
The Senior Girl’s Relay Team delivered six second personal best times with each swimmer bettering their own best time in their leg of the relay. They stated it was a great experience swimming as part of a relay team and look forward to future swimming events. They loved the experience of swimming where the Olympians swim.
Emma M swam in her individual 50m freestyle event and relayed that she enjoyed being with the fast swimmers. The water was initially cold, but felt fast.
Dakoda K reported although she felt she had a slow race, she notched a three second personal best in her 50m butterfly and came 36
th. When speaking about the event, she stated she didn’t
expect that many people to be down there.
Warne M swam in the 50m freestyle and breaststroke. He was surprised with his results and stated enthusiastically that he wants to make it to state again.
Jaydah K bettered her best time in the butterfly by two hundredths of a second and earned 31st
place overall. She expressed it was a great event and looks forward to achieving further success in high school.
Cadence M had a full schedule at this meet, swimming six events. She recalled that she managed to improve all her times, with her aim to get under 3 minutes in her individual medley, but clocked 3 minutes exactly. She was privileged to be part of the opening ceremony, carrying the North West flag and was interviewed. Cadence spoke of this great experience, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones.
Debating
Last Tuesday, 30th April, 12 eager debaters travelled to Inverell for a very educational and entertaining day, presented by Anthony Davey. The children were in raptures from the way Anthony presented the in depth information to the group of year 5 and 6 students. GIPS is looking forward to another successful and enjoyable year of debating and would like to thanks the parents that were able to assist with transport.
This day has made Mrs Bryant's job very difficult and try outs for the teams will be held very soon.

Combined Schools Celtic Art Exhibition
Congratulations to all the local schools who exhibited a wide variety of
Celtic artworks during the Celtic Festival week. The Scottish themed
masterpieces looked amazing on display and wowed our visiting
audience. All participating schools received a book titled “A Scottish
Year” by Tania McCartney and Tina Sterling for their school library,
proudly donated by the Glen Innes Visitor Information Centre. The
Combined School Celtic Committee would like to sincerely thank all
participants and the Visitor Information Centre for their support of the
exhibition. We hope you enjoyed admiring them.
Miss Mercer
