In the early years of the 20th century, bathers on the beaches along Hempstead Harbor and the Sound could easily identify

the 304-foot-long yacht named Corsair. Her tall masts, well-proportioned funnel, the graceful shape of her clipper bow,

her shiny black hull with gilded figurehead and trail boards made Corsair as beautiful as she was seaworthy. As the bath-

ers admired this magnificent yacht they could never imagine the second life that awaited the Corsair in the time of war.

Corsair, the third ship of that name owned by the Morgan fam-

ily, belonged to J.P Morgan, known as Jack Morgan. In peace-

time, Morgan moored the Corsair at Matinecock Point near his

home on East Island, Glen Cove. He had inherited the ship

from his father, J. Pierpont Morgan, who had her built in 1899.

Corsair means pirate or privateer, which is an unlikely name

for a ship that hosted European royalty and the leaders of Euro-

pean and American business and society. In pre-war days, the

Kaiser himself was a guest on the Corsair, which later would

take part in the grim struggle with his own German fleet.

When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917,

Morgan turned the Corsair over to the Navy. Her bowsprit

was removed, a wheelhouse was installed and she was painted

a dull gray. Hardly recognizable as the luxury yacht she had

once been, the newly named USS Corsair was fitted with guns

and loaded with depth charges and ammunition. Accommoda-

tions were made for 134 officers and men, who replaced the nor-

mal crew of 55. At first, the Navy placed a regular naval officer, Lieutenant Commander T.A. Kittinger, in charge of the

USS Corsair. Her peacetime officer, Captain A. Porter, enlisted as the executive officer. After a few months, Kittinger was

promoted and Porter again took the helm of the Corsair, where he remained for the rest of the war. Several of Corsair’s

peacetime crew, which had included many Princeton men, enlisted to serve on the USS Corsair during the war.

The first assignment given the USS Corsair was a memorable one. She brought the first contingent of American troops to

serve in France during World War I. The USS Corsair arrived at St. Nazaire, France on June 17, 1917 with the eagerly

awaited troops. From there, she joined the U.S. Patrol Squadron operating against German submarines. Among her rescues

were the survivors of the torpedoed U.S. Army Transport Antilles (October 1917) and the survivors of the Californian,

which had struck a mine (June 1918).

At times, the USS Corsair served as the flagship for the Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces in European waters. The

Corsair’s last government service was to bring Secretary of the Navy, Josephus Daniels, and his staff to France for peace

negotiations. In June, 1919, the Navy returned the Corsair to her owner. In 1930, Jack Morgan replaced Corsair III with

an even larger yacht (343.5 feet), which he also called Corsair. Morgan’s last yacht, Corsair IV, also served with valor in

World War II, but this time under the flag of the British Navy.

GLEN COVE LIBRARY’S ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

The Oral History Program is an ongoing project designed to record and preserve the dynamic history of Glen Cove through

the stories and experiences of its residents. The project includes a collection of audio and videotaped interviews with for-

mer mayors, descendants of Gold Coast estate workers, veterans, local business owners, and long-time residents. The inter-

views contain personal reminiscences and recollections which give the flavor of everyday life in years past and provide an

account of some of the major events in Glen Cove’s history. The collection is part of the Library's reference collection.

Patrons may listen to interviews or read transcripts during history room hours (every Monday, from 2pm to 5pm and Thurs-

day 9am to 12 noon, or by appointment).

DOLL BONES, BY HOLLY BLACK TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 4PM

Zach, Poppy and Alice have been friends forever. And for almost

as long, they’ve been playing one continuous, ever-changing game

of pirates and thieves, mermaids and warriors. Ruling over all is

the Great Queen, a bone-china doll cursing those who displease

her. But they are in middle school now. Their friendship might be

over, until Poppy declares she’s been having dreams about the

Queen—and the ghost of a girl who will not rest until the bone-

china doll is buried in her empty grave.

The three friends set off on one last adven-

ture to lay the Queen’s ghost to rest but

nothing goes according to plan. Creepy

things begin to happen as their adventure

turns into an epic journey. Is the doll just

a doll or something more sinister? And if

there really is a ghost, will it let them go

now that it has them in its clutches? Read

this book and join us for a great discus-

sion. Copies of the book are available at
