Front CENTRE DECEMBER 2016- NEWS FROM THE CENTRE ART CLASSES AT THE CENTRE GLASS BEADS 2: MILLEFIORI, FLORALS, & ENCASING* (adult) Tuesday: 6:00 - 8:30pm (workshop) December 6, 2016 Add millefiori and encasing to create funky new designs! Now that the basics are under your belt, you can decide which avenue of flamework you’d like to put more attention to. Choose a single class, or take all four and get two free Open Studio visits. Cost: $50 *One of four individual workshops in the Glass Beads 2 series. BEGINNER PHOTOGRAPHY (adult) Saturday: 1:00 - 4:00pm December 17, 2016 Chilliwack Photographer Vickie Legere will guide aspiring photographers in demystifying their cameras with this workshop! Through a mixture of seminar and practical techniques, students will explore the different basic photography methods of DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras. Student will need to bring their own camera, as well as tools for taking notes. Cost: $35 E xperience the sounds of Christmas, but with a gypsy jazz twist when Van Django brings their festive performance of Cool Yule to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on December 8. With retro, swing takes of traditional holiday songs, it’ll be unlike any Christmas show you’ve ever heard! From classic favourites, to jazz standards, and even a few pop tunes and sing-alongs, there’s nothing that Van Django leaves out. Van Django has been performing since 1998 and has toured across Canada, as well as Europe, China, and the USA. Inspired by the 1930’s Quintet of the Hot Club of France’s gypsy jazz music, the group is finally bringing their talent to Chilliwack. Van Django has performed with gypsy jazz icons such as the John Jorgenson Quintet, and their first album Tiptoe Trip has been played on a variety of radio stations including CBC, RDI, Espace Musique, NPR, and even Lyric FM in Ireland. e group’s second album Waltz in the Shape of a Tree was released in April othis year. e string swing quartet is comprised of four of B.C.’s most talented string musicians: violinist and composer / arranger Cameron Wilson, who also plays with the National Broadcast Orchestra; guitarist Budge Schachte who has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and can be heard in several films, including Love and Other Dilemmas, his first feature film soundtrack; Finn Manniche, a graduate of UBC’s music program, plays guitar and cello and has performed and recorded with a variety of musicians including the Armadillo String Quartet, the Paperboys, and 54/40; and acoustic bassist and Vancouver performer and music teacher Brett Gubbels, who has played international jazz and folk festivals across North America and Europe, and has recorded with Juno nominees Susan Crowe and Compadres, and Juno winner James Keelaghan. But Van Django won’t be ringing in the holidays on their own! e group will be accompanied by vocalist LJ Mounteney’s soulful blues voice, as well as Keith Bennett and his harmonica, as they perform Christmas favourites with a cool jazz twist that’s sure to cause some foot tapping or maybe even swing dancing! From Kwanzaa to Christmas, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, and Ramadan, the real and figurative colours of the season come alive and paint a magical portrait of people learning about and appreciating the wonderful traditions celebrated by their friends and neighbours.
