In various Gospels parables, we find a contrast between the proud and ineffective request placed before God by the self-righteous Pharisee and the humble and effective prayer placed before God by the contrite public sinner. We are reminded that in the presence of God we are all sinners who stand in need of God’s mercy. What pleases God the most and what opens the rich graces of heaven to our fallen world are humble and contrite hearts.

Recognizing our limitations, our failures, and our needs leads us to contrition and humility. Then, realizing that we have been so blessed by God--despite our sinfulness-- leads us to gratitude. Thus, Jesus’s teaching shows us that the Lord turns His ear to the prayer of a humble, contrite, and grateful heart! Let us strive this coming week to look for opportunities to cultivate a heart which is more contrite, more humble, and more grateful.

Coincidentally, as we strive to grow in holiness by an increase in contrition, humility, and gratitude, next Sunday the Church celebrates all those who achieved holiness as we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. On Sunday, November 1st, we celebrate all the saints in heaven, especially those not formally canonized by the Church but known to God. Many of us have been so beautifully touched in our lives by saints who have not been canonized formally by the Church. These saints include those—perhaps your mother or your grandfather, or a particular teacher or co-worker, or a religious sister or priest—who have so beautifully lived their life that God’s working through them was so evident. So, on this Holy Day, we thank God for all the saints of the Church, but in particular we thank God for all the saints who have touched our lives for the better and have brought joy and beauty to our hearts.

November, which starts this week, has traditionally been a month dedicated to prayers for our Holy Souls in purgatory. On Saturday, November 2, the Feast of All Souls, we offer special prayers for all the deceased. Be assured each day during the month of Holy Souls, I will remember especially your deceased loved ones in prayer. On Saturday, November 7, at 11:00AM in the Church, we will celebrate our Parish All Souls Mass. At this special Mass, all the deceased members of the parish, especially those who have passed away this past year, will be remembered at the altar of God. During this liturgy, the names of the deceased will be read and each family will be invited to bring forth a flower which will be provided for you in procession to the altar. Kindly see the Bulletin elsewhere for more details about registering the name of your deceased loved ones to be remembered in our special annual Mass for Holy Souls. All are welcome. We are planning a wonderful Forty Hours Devotions this year and we hope you will join us during this special time of praise and grace for our parish from Sunday November 15th to Tuesday, November 17th. This past week, many members of our parish staff were trained and certified in CPR/AED and First Aid. It will be an added level of safety to have certified members at our various parish events and PREP classes. Let us hope and pray that these life saving measures will never have to be used, but better to be prepared!

Our 6th Grade PREP Catechists, Mike Krancer and Joe Callan, teach remotely on Tuesdays and Wednesdays about the Old Testament, salvation his-tory, and the beginnings of the early church. Their first few lessons focused on the story of creation and the fall of humankind from the book of Genesis. SAINTS FOR US! Saints Simon and Jude Feast: October 28

Listed among the Twelve Apostles in the New Testament, Simon is “the Canaanite” to Matthew and Mark and “the Zealot” to Luke; Jude is “Thaddeus” to Matthew and Mark, “Judas of James” to Luke, and “Judas, not Iscariot” to John. Their names occur together in the Canon of the Mass and are celebrated on the same day, possibly because they are said to have both preached in Mesopotamia and Persia. While details on the lives of these Apostles are scarce beyond the New Testament, the Church rightfully celebrates these foundational Apostles of the early Church, proclaiming “O God, through the work of the apostles you have spoken your Word of love, your Son, into our world's deafness. Open our ears to hear; open our hearts to heed; open our will to obey, that we may proclaim the good news with our lives.” The Apostles Simon and Jude are buried together at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Fr. Donovan offered Mass at the altar of their tomb.

The Second Greatest Story Ever Told

In this vastly popular talk, Fr. Michael Gaitley describes the "second greatest story ever told"—a story that encompasses Di-vine Mercy, the life of Pope St. John Paul II, and the crucial role that Marian Consecration can play in your life. Fr. Gaitley is a priest in the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immac-ulate Conception and the director of the Association of Marian Helpers, a fraternal community with more than one million members.

Liturgy Lessons “Receiving the Eucharist Worthily”

The Immaculate Conception celebrates the conception of Mary in the womb of her Mother, Saint Anne. This teaching finds its origin in the way that the Angle Gabriel addressed Mary during the Annunciation. “Hail, Mary, full of grace,” said the angelic messenger. If it is by grace that we are able to avoid sin, then, if Mary was “full of grace,” then she was wholly without sin.

But, why did Mary have to be without stain of sin? The great theologians of Church, including St. Thomas Aquinas and Pope Pius IX (who promulgated this teaching in 1854), suggest that it was a matter of “fittingness.” In other words, it was fitting that the Son of God would dwell in a vessel that was most pure and undefiled by sin. “She [Mary] was never in darkness but always in light; and that, therefore, she was entirely a fit habitation for Christ, not because of the state of her body, but because of her original grace,” writes Pius IX.

If it was fitting for the Virgin Mary to be in a state of grace to receive our Lord, it is also fitting for us to be in a state of grace when receiving Him in the Eucharist. We, too, must be a fitting and pure vessel to receive Jesus which means being in the “state of grace” or free from mortal sin. The teaching of the Church remains constant in that we are not to receive the Eucharist if we are in a state of mortal sin.

Mortal sin comes from the Latin “mori” – “to die,” for, by these sins our interior life is cut off from the life of grace. A further examination of mortal sins can be found in the Catechism. It suffices to note here that a mortal sin requires three elements: grave matter (it must be grave in objective content), full knowledge (one must know that the act is grave), and full consent (one must freely will the objectively disordered act).

We should never be discouraged if one falls into sin (even grave sin). Despite what the evil one might try to convince us of, we have always the right to love God with our heart even if we do not love him at times with your actions. Likewise, we can regain our baptismal state by going to the great Sacrament of Penance. A nice practice to adopt, in order to receive our Lord worthily in the Eucharist, is to say a little prayer to Our Lady as we walk up in the communion line: “My lady, grant me a share in your purity so that I too may become a worthy vessel of Jesus.” The Blessed Mother assuredly grants such a request.
