Dear Family of Faith Members,

The name Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, “an arrival,” and refers to the season of preparation for Christ’s arrival on earth. During Advent, we remember the nation of Israel’s longing for the Messiah, we anticipate our own celebration of Christmas, and we look forward to Christ’s coming. Advent is celebrated during the four weeks prior to Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is also the first Sunday of the new Church liturgical year. This year the first day of Advent

is Sunday, November 27. As part of our church’s observance of Advent and our individual preparation for the celebration of Christmas, I want to suggest some alternatives to the ways we normally mark these weeks. Maybe one or two of these will strike a chord in you. First, spend less on gifts and then give an equal amount to the church or a non-profit organization you believe provides care for God’s most vulnerable people. Many of those to whom we give presents don’t really need them anyway. Second, bring even more food to church. The Food Bank of South Jersey and other agencies we support are in desperate need of more resources. For many, the economy has taken a heavy toll, and gifts of food sometimes enable them to make it through the week. Unfortunately, donations are way down. Our church family can do something about this! Third, invite someone who lives alone to dinner during the next month. An evening with people who care may be the best gift that person receives this holiday season. And finally, come to worship. The gifts we offer to others only make sense as we reflect on the gift God has offered to us. Use this Advent to truly prepare for the arrival of the one whose birth we will mark on December 25. In his peace,

Bill

Do you have relatives and friends who live far away who would enjoy seeing your youth or children performing in a choir, being baptized, or participating in our Sunday morning services at 11:00?

You should let them know that they can go to our church's web page to click on the live-streaming sentence on the home page. They can then watch it live, as it happens, or, a few days later, they can go to the live-streaming and click on the service in the archive section.

Family Faith FormationFAMILY SABBATHCondensed from an article by Marilyn Sharpe, May 2005

What was God thinking of, commanding a Sabbath? Doesn’t God know how busy we are, how much we have to do, how hard it is to keep track of everyone’s schedule?

So, really, what was God thinking of? God was thinking of you and your family... and of • God’s love for you and desire to be in relationship with you • Your need for rest and restoration, for pausing to reflect, for savoring the joyous things in life, for delight • Time to experience the abundant life Jesus came to bring • Recharging you before sending you back into the world

What is Sabbath? It may be a day (or week or month) or it may be one deep, intentional, God-filling-you breath. It is an intentional time to slow down, to step out of the torrent of life rushing past, to be still, to be in the presence of God, to be with those you love, to savor silence and beauty and good food and delight, to emerge refreshed.

Why Sabbath? God knew we’d burn out, lose focus, worship other gods, slight our relationships if we didn’t practice Sabbath. It is one of the ways God cares for us.

So where might you experience Sabbath.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES: By its very nature, Sabbath is a practice of the Four Keys for Nurturing Faith.

1. CARING CONVERSATIONS – Use Sabbath time to be really present with one another, listen deeply, share your deepest dreams and joys and concerns.

2. FAMILY DEVOTIONS – Spend intentional, focused time with God as a family, naming the people, places and experiences that have been the face of Jesus in your lives. Read scripture together. Collect prayer requests from one another.

3. RITUALS AND TRADITIONS – Sabbath is drenched with rituals – candles, eating together, a walk in the beauty of God’s creation, a restoring nap. All of these remind you that you are on holy ground.

4. FAMILY SERVICE – Plan together the ways you will serve God’s family and its needs after you are refreshed. Thank one another for the loving acts of service you have done for one another.

Advent Festival provides activities for the whole family!
