This presentation summarizes notes from two side sessions
Session 1: Integrating Research into the K-12 Classroom
Presenters from U of Hawaii at Manoa, NYU-Poly
Key ideas for GK-12 Fellows:– Share personal experiences with
students– Discuss research w/students and
provide regular updates– Don't be afraid to mix standards (e.g.
chemisty + math)– Use authentic assessment
Session 2: Making Fellows Classroom Ready
Session led by University of Cincinnati
Training organized into five components
U of C Training: first component
Takes place in the summer
Includes:– Teaching overview– Pedagogical techniques– Microteaching– Journal entries– Shadowing– Reading– Lesson plan development– Cultural training
Fellows make a video and poster
U of C Training: second component
Takes place during academic year
Fellows spend 10 hrs per week in classroom
Fellows teach 5 major lessons and post them on their website
Each lesson lasts 6 weeks w/possible guest speakers
Fellows make 1 poster per lesson
U of C Training: third component
Involves “webpage lesson modeling”
Basically means putting lessons online so other Fellows and parents can see lessons
U of C Training: fourth component
Consists of a technology workshop to teach Teachers and Fellows about different classroom technologies:– Smartboards– Webpage design– Excel– TI Nspire– Blogging– Interactive classrooms
Also includes open house with presentations from K-12 students, PIs, Fellows, and Teachers
U of C Training: fifth component
Consists of biweekly meetings between Fellows and their PI/advisor
Discussions include:– Classroom materials– Fellow's research and academic
progress– Lesson content
GK-12 Fellows at U of C work up to 20 hours/week

Possible activities for K-12 students:– Museum night– Party– Iron Scientist competition– Science mobile– Science fair– Seminars– Tours
