A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR

As I reflect on my time as a volunteer at United Way, as a member of the Board, and now Board Chair, I continue to be humbled by the spirit of our community. Each day

members of our community reach out for a hand and find the generosity of the people around them offering to lend a hand.

It is this generosity and the willingness of our community to make a difference that has enabled our United Way to reach the 2011 goal of $3.25 million. Our local United Way raised $50,530 more than the previous year, even with fewer individual donors. We are also fortunate to have so many community members who dedicate their time to serving others. In 2011, Our United Way mobilized 3,664 volunteers who gave 30,600 hours of their time.

ARIANNA’S STORYnvest in your daughter and the child sitting in the desk next to her. From the time Arianna was two years old, Ms. Carol from Family Support Council, a United Way agency, visited Arianna and her

grandmother, Barbara, Arianna’s primary caregiver. Ms. Carol helped Arianna through her formative years. When Arianna had difficulties learning her colors, Ms. Carol suggested that Barbara start pointing out the colors of food that Arianna liked best. Ice cream became the teaching tool, as Arianna learned to associate “pink” with strawberry ice cream and “brown” with chocolate. When Arianna started school, her teacher was impressed by Arianna’s kindergarten readiness skills. Your gift to United Way helps children enter kindergarten ready to succeed.

Upon a routine check-up, James Robbs’ doctor reached over and took his hand. James was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had to retire after 30 years of working with a Dalton company to cope with

his illness. After undergoing treatment, James found he was spending his entire monthly budget on mounting medical bills and could no longer afford to pay his monthly rent. He faced the threat of homelessness. James contacted the Salvation Army, a United Way partner agency, which provided him with food assistance, getting his bills up to date, and budgeting. Seven years ago, James was given two weeks to live without treatment. However, thanks to the generosity of United Way investors, James was able to stay comfortably in his home throughout recovery and is currently beating cancer and enjoying retirement. Your gift to United Way prevents homelessness and hunger for those in need in Northwest Georgia.

EUNICE’S STORYunice has lived in Northwest Georgia for over thirty years, spending time in her garden and preparing big meals for her family. Five years ago, Eunice began suffering from arthritis and was

forced to give up her beloved hobbies. She was unable to prepare a hot, healthy meal due to the pain in her hands. Fortunately, Eunice received help from Meals on Wheels, a United Way partner agency that provides nutritious meals to homebound elderly. Now Eunice never goes hungry and enjoys a bright moment in her day when a friendly Meals on Wheels volunteer delivers her food. Your gift to United Way fights hunger and ensures that our elderly remain independent.
