GeologistLaurenceAndriashekof theGround WaterGroup from the
Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has been researching surficial
sediments for the Beaver River Study Area. One of the primaryconcerns of this research wasdetermining the interactions between
surface water and ground water, specifically the relationship
between the deep and shallow water aquifers with surface water
bodies.
To address this properly it was necessary to analyze bathymetry
data represented by lake bottom contours derived from depth
soundings. Maps Distribution Branch of the Alberta Sustainable
Resource Development stored the most up-to-date information as a
repository of hard-copy maps created by the Alberta Environmentbetween 1960-1979
In January 2003, GISmo Solutions Ltd embarked on a project to
create digital bathymetry data for 27 lakes within the Beaver River
study area. The first phase of this project addressed the
reproduction of bathymetry information from the hard copy maps
into a properly geo-referenced digital Geographical Information
System (GIS) data set. Once contours, lake elevations, and lake
boundaries were validated, the second phase integrated the
bathymetry data into the Base Features 1:250K 25-meter Digital
Elevation Model (DEM).
Following the delivery of Beaver River bathymetry product, AGS
initiated a province-wide integration of remaining 146 lakes in the
repository. New project utilized the freely distributed Shuttle Radar
Topography Mission (SRTM) DEMfor integration.
This project was completed in December 2004, and has produced a
complete,up-to-date digital bathymetrydataset forAlberta.

Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) required
services to compile and update spatial information for grazing and
agricultural disposition resources and assigned a corresponding
contract to GISmo Solutions Ltd. Supporting the digitizing of
vegetation detail was the use of sketch maps and various
orthoimages. Processes were developed to automate the selection
and clipping of 1metre TARIN images to create disposition
backgrounds.
Dispositions Activity Reports precisely describe a total area of a
disposition as well as an area withineach ATS quarter section with a
corresponding metes and bounds description. The objective of the
Refine Disposition Boundaries process was to make sure that thespatial dataareaaccurately represents theactivity report (within
+-2%tolerance).

Many important initiatives related to the sustainable natural
resources management benefit from accurate delineation of
watersheds and classified hydrography information. Managementof forest, fish and wildlife, and water resources often depends on
common and government approved methodology and
classification.
GISmo supports preparation of quality watersheds and related
classified information for government agencies
(AENV,ASRD,CEMA) , research organizations (ARC,ACA,FMF)
and forest companies.
This specific project was to provide accurate Strahler classified
watershed boundaries for the Edson and Drayton Valley FMA
suitable for forest management planning activities while consistent
with government approved approach.
Specific project objectives were to:
Hydro-corrected Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and attributed
spatial data sets addressed current client’s needs and allowed for
creation of expanded and comprehensive structures for future
analysis and modeling.
Apply Strahler classification to stream network consistently
with processes used on government and related projects.
Delineate reasonable accuracy watersheds and create a
seamless division of suitable administrative areas.

The project focus is to develop a fuzzy logic based application
that enables foresters to arrive at strategic and operational
prescriptive treatments for harvested areas. Fuzzy
(multivalent) theory allows for the processing of pre-defined
rules and knowledge base to quantify and assess decision
accuracy. The application will allow foresters to respond to
increased government concerns over sustainable forest
management. The linkages this application creates between
silviculture research and corporate activities are a result of the
experience and past work of several people at Canfor. The
experience GISmo Solutions Ltd. has gained in working with
Canfor’s GENUS data management system has provided an
excellent background for the development of the prescriptive
fuzzysystem.
Utilizes specific information regarding the
structure and function of the ecosystem at the
stand level and falls within the provincial
frameworkfor forest management.
Theadvantages to this application are:
Represents the fine scale of resolution for landuse planning that can also be summarized intomanagement units for desired levels ofanalysis
Provides a framework for site assessments, productivity assessments, silviculturalprescriptions and refiningyieldcurves.
