PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Last week all of our new 2021 Preps came to visit the school. I was very proud to show them the great work the students in the Prep classes are doing and how respectful and caring our students are as they cheerily greeted us as they walked by. I hope the new parents will feel reassured about how we will care for the new preps next year. In the next few weeks we will be asking the Yr 1 and Year 4 teachers to organise some Year 2, 2021 peer support for the yard (given our staggered breaks will continue next year) as well as some Year 5 2021 buddies to do some activities with the students in their classes. Writers’ Club awards Children in Years 4, 5, 6 have the opportunity each year to be involved in our Writers’ Club. These weekly sessions allow students with a passion for writing to publish authentic pieces for the newsletter, Gisborne Gazette, writing competitions, the school library etc and practise skills such as writing to a deadline and word count or writing to a set criteria and style guide. Students in all classes learn skills in their daily writing lessons in class and they are practising these in their Writers’ Club pieces, such as referring to vocab lists and revising their pieces to enhance and add adjectives, adverbs and a variety of sentence starters. They learn to engage the reader with a ‘sizzling start’, hypothetical questions and persuasive devices. They learn to write for different purposes and audiences and how to change their text to suit the situation. Thank you to Mel Hunter for her work with this group. Principal Awards were distributed a couple of weeks ago to Claire B, Taj C, Alana D, Emily M, Ruby R, Monique M, Addison G, Oliver P, Scarlette G, Millie D and Riley S for their ongoing commitment to Writers’ Club, including during home learning. Well done. NAIDOC awards and Remembrance Day Last week was NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee). NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The children also learnt about the significance of Remembrance Day and observed the one-minute silence on the 11/11 at 11am. The following children received awards for their ongoing inclusive behaviours and for their work in NAIDOC week:
>Damon (6A) was highly engaged in the learning last week about Aboriginal Art, the seasons and Aboriginal role models. He brought a possum skin with symbols on it to explain the ceremony of giving birth for the class to see. He also brought an authentic Aboriginal painting, showing the symbols the class were learning about during the week.
>From Year 5 Nabihah (5A) and Aman (5C) were very respectful and asked lots of questions showing a keen interest in learning more about NAIDOC week.
>Bridget C (3B), will receive her award this week. Bridget wrote a beautiful letter that connected aboriginal heritage and war on Remembrance Day. She wrote from the perspective of an Aboriginal solider known to have served in WW2. Have a great weekend Julie Soutter

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Transition to 2021 Our Step up/transition days will begin next Monday 23rd of November with students in years
Prep-5 participating in a short session throughout the day. Students will be placed in mixed
year level groups and work with teachers for 2021. We have 3 transition sessions between
now and the end of the year with students from years 1-6 meeting their 2021 teacher and
classmates on Tuesday December 8th. Prep 2021 students will be notified of their teacher in
the week after the 8th.
Please support your child through being positive and happy about the transition sessions as
this assists the students with changing into a new class group with new teachers. We will have
a few new staff in 2021 and we welcome them to Gisborne PS.
2021 Please notify the office if your family is leaving Gisborne PS
at the end of the year. If you know of anyone looking to
enrol for 2021, please contact the office ASAP so we can
allocate classes.
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) A few staff participated in a Professional Learning session online this week discussing RRRR
program schools. The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have
been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social,
emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and
positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health
related outcomes and subjective wellbeing. It also reduces antisocial behaviours including
engagement in gender related violence. At GPS, the content is covered weekly in
classrooms where teachers plan and implement the program.
Victorian Education Excellence Awards 2020 Tomorrow evening, the Annual Victoria Education Excellence Awards will be held. The
awards recognise the inspirational teachers, principals and education support staff who
improve schools and support children and young people to develop the skills, courage and
curiosity they need to succeed in life. Our
Principal, Julie Soutter is a finalist and we wish her
all the best for the award.
Have a fabulous weekend.
Regards, Lisa Maxwell

GET PACKING — A HEALTHY LUNCH BOX
DID YOU KNOW? Lunch provides around one third of our daily nutritional needs, so it’s important to put some thought and planning into it. Students need to eat a variety of foods every day to be healthy and perform well at school. An ideal school lunch should include at least one item from each food group and also include water. Try to encourage your child to get involved in the planning, shopping and preparation of foods for their school lunches, so they are more likely to enjoy them.

A FRIENDLY MESSAGE FROM OUR LIBRARY HAVE A LOOK ~ LOOK ~ LOOK!
Hello again dear students and families,
My shelves are feeling empty. I appreciate students borrowing books
and taking them home.
Unfortunately some of the books tend to roam!
Check your house, under your beds, even have a look in your sheds!
Look anywhere, look everywhere. I am sorry for my despair.
I just want my books returned soon, otherwise I will think they have
flown to the moon.
HAPPY LIBRARY BOOK HUNTING!
LOST IN SPACE???
THANK YOU TO THE OLIVE FAMILY
