ASK BEFORE YOU ACTOne of the important cornerstones of the FAMU Athletics program is the loyalty and enthusiasm of the Rattler fans that have demonstrated their interest in our teams by their attendance at events and through their support in many other ways. We must be cautious, however, not to let enthusiasm for athletics lead us into conflict with the very specific rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association or the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The NCAA definition of “a representative of the University’s athletics interest” is very broad and encompasses many if not all of the people who are regular attendees at our sports events. If you fall into this category, there are a number of activities regarding contact with student-athletes and athletic recruits that could put the University at risk for NCAA sanctions.

The University is charged with the responsibility to exercise “institutional control” of its athletics interests and we are committed to maintaining the kind of responsible program in which all of us take such great pride. The NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for ensuring that individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interest comply with all applicable NCAA rules.

Florida A&M is grateful for all you have done to make this a great program. We know, based on our contacts with alumni, faculty, staff and friends across the state and country, that you share our earnest ambition for athletic success within the rules.

Summary: FAMU Athletics operates as an auxiliary enterprise of the University, relying on private donations, ticket sales, student fees and conference revenue to fund 16 varsity sports. As the costs of higher education and maintaining a successful athletic program continue to escalate, sustained private annual contributions are critical. In addition to funding annual scholarships (including tuition, fees, room and board), donations will supplement general operating costs, maintenance and upkeep of facilities, and provide budget support for individual sports. FAMU Athletics needs a multitude of individuals making an annual outright contribution commitment to FAMU Athletics. The generosity of these individuals has and will most certainly continue strengthen the foundation that we are so proud to stand on today. As FAMU Athletics continues to make tremendous strides in terms of departmental budget growth and overall program strength, our competitors are making similar strides. As such, we must reach out to the masses in an effort to substantially increase philanthropic giving to the FAMU Athletics Department. By increasing our donor base with more “partners” we can generate the resources necessary to consistently compete while enhancing communication and engagement through this broad-based and exciting stewardship opportunity.

Mission: In support of FAMU Athletics and its quest for championships, this effort is philanthropic in nature, and is purposed to reach those invested in the enhancement of Rattler Athletics. These funds are critical in elevating FAMU Athletics to nationally competitive levels on an annual basis by providing the resources for world-class facilities, coaches, and scholarship support.
