If you’re looking for Art, Musicals, Films and Fables, then they have something for you.

First off the rank is a se-lection of art works from the St Vincent de Paul’s Primary School in Morwell.

On display from Thurs-day, October 4, students from grades 4/5 have been enthusiastic in selecting their pieces for this years show.

“The creative and artistic class of 4/5W have chal-lenged themselves to create and display their skills in many ways throughout the year. The exhibition is titled Today’s a great day to learn something new and students are excited to exhibit their work at the Latrobe Per-forming Arts Centre,” Ms Monacella, their art teacher said.

Latrobe Performing Arts and Venues Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that

the school exhibitions at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre are an integral and popular component of the education program.

“Latrobe Performing Arts is proud to be able to sup-port our local students to exhibit their art work and encourage their journey in discovering more about art and themselves. It’s wonder-ful to see the students’ joy and pride as they show their work to their family and friends,” Ms Roberts said.

The Phillip Island GP will be held on 26-28 Octo-ber and accommodation is booking out fast.

Bass Coast Shire Coun-cil’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said early interest is the strongest it has been since 2007, which drew the biggest three day crowd since the event re-turned to the Island.

“This is going to be a huge event this year,” said Mr Angarane. “It’s Casey Stoner’s last year and also the 10th anniversary of the Barry Sheene Ride.

“We’re expecting every-one to come out in force and help make it a memorable event.”

Residents and businesses are encouraged to get into the spirit of the event and ‘Get Dressed’ – that is deco-rate your home, businesses, school and selves in your GP best.

“Get Dressed is about getting the community on board and helping to create a fantastic atmosphere,” said Mr Angarane.

“You can also write your messages of support to Ca-sey, take a photo of it and send it to us and we will put them up on the superscreen in Cowes.”

Entertainment in Cowes will be held in Thompson Avenue and there will no longer be a licensed area in the Jetty Triangle.

“We want to create more of a street festival feel,” said Mr Angarane. “Licensed premises will extend onto Thompson Avenue to help create this environment.

“We are finalising our traffic management plans which will reflect the ex-pected crowd numbers.

“We will continue to monitor the condition of roads and we’ve got a com-

mitment from VicRoads and Council that these will be up to scratch.

“Works will continue in construction zones on the Bass Highway and Phillip Island Road to ensure they can accommodate the blue line.

“We’ll be updating resi-dents on traffic management closer to the event,” contin-ued Mr Angarane.

More information about traffic management and Get Dressed will be available soon. Keep a watch on the Bass Coast website.

Melbourne Photogra-pher Peter Garnick’s latest exhibition – Lasting Beau-ty – will be displayed 2-22 October at Warragul’s West Gippsland Arts Cen-tre as part of the annual West Gippsland Gardi-valia Festival.

Peter’s practice is based on abstract and formalistic interpretations of the envi-ronment. His recent exhibi-tions have been based on construction sites, antique instrumentation and now, the lasting beauty of flow-ers. The resulting artwork

presents an alternative and creative view of nature by revealing some of its incon-spicuous elegance.

Peter says of his work, “It occurred to me that flowers could effectively challenge traditional notions of beauty in a powerful way. Through the eye of the lens and ele-ments of colour, form and texture, I find intriguing pro-gressions from the natural to a metaphoric analogy. This exhibition offers a precious opportunity to explore such an association.”

Baw Baw Shire Coun-

cil’s Manager of Arts and Culture, Rob Robson said that “West Gippsland Arts Centre has been fortunate this year to have been able to run an almost continuous program of exhibitions in its foyers, featuring the work of many local and regional artists. The opportunity to bring an exhibition of work by such a nationally recog-nised artist will add another dimension to the scope of art on show to inspire local au-diences.”

Bostonw-born Garnick has been a photographer for

nearly 40 years. His work has been exhibited overseas and in Australia, and he is represented in many collec-tions in the USA, UK and Australia.

Peter was a finalist in a number of art competitions around Australia includ-ing the Hutchins in Hobart; Queensland’s Prometheus in 2009 and the 2010 St. Mi-chaels in Melbourne.

Peter’s exhibition opens Friday, Oct 5.

The Australian Year of the Farmer 2012 is a cel-ebration that recognises what farmers do for all Australians.

It’s about what we eat, what we wear and the mate-rials we build with – all the fine quality products that our farmers grow and harvest in large and small businesses.

Australia’s farmers should be recognised and celebrated for feeding the nation, for leading the world in farming techniques and innovations, and for sustain-ing the vital agribusinesses that underpin our economy.

The Australian Year of

the Farmer reaches out to every Australian. It aims to involve and bring together rural and urban communi-ties, schools, farming or-ganisations, all the produc-ers, the suppliers and the consumers of Australia’s fine produce in a year-long program of events across the nation.

The Australian Year of the Farmer continues to raise the profile of farming, highlighting the importance of food security and our dependence on Australian farmers.

Especially, it reminds city folk of the importance of our

farmers, encouraging all of us to purchase and to appre-ciate Australian produce.

It also demonstrates how farmers respect and value the relationship they have with consumers and urban communities.

The Australian Year of the Farmer focuses on the future and the sustainability of our farming industries.

As the global population grows, so does our depend-ence on our Aussie farmers.

What would we do with-out them?

For all of us, farming in Australia feeds, supports and sustains life.

Kids walk the talk over 100kmJack Wickfeldt, Ethan

Prior, Daniel Grassby, David Yue and their sup-port team completed a challenging 100 km walk from Bairnsdale to Orbost. They were raising funds for Leukaemia, inspired by family friend, Jessica Yue.

When David’s sister Jes-sica was diagnosed with Leukaemia his group of friends wanted to help.

Jack decided he would like to walk from Bairnsdale to Orbost on the rail trail (100kms in 5 days) to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The group started out on Saturday 22nd September 2012 and finished walking on Wednesday 26th Septem-ber.

Jack’s ambition was to raise awareness and funds to help people like Jessica who is only 14 years old. The Yue family and the Leukaemia Foundation endorsed Jack and friends to complete this task.

All funds raised will help patients and families living with Leukaemias, Lympho-mas, Myeloma or related blood disorders as well as fund research into better

treatments and cures. The Adventure started

opposite Howitt Park, East Bairnsdale at the beginning of the Rail Trail on Saturday. The boys left with pomp, ceremony and a big cheque from the Bairnsdale CFA, there was even a fire truck. Many East Gippslanders chose to give their time and their money to make sure the walk was a success.

The Bruthen commu-nity hosted a “Light The Night” walk with lanterns and raised $2000. Mick & Jenny from Mingling Wa-ters, Nowa Nowa, kindly donated a cabin to use as a base camp.

The boys and their team

walked through farms, for-ests and saw emus, wal-labies, an echidna and lots of different birds. The Rail Trail provided an even path through the very best of what Gippsland is about.

Jack had a goal to raise $5000 and they are really close, if you want to boost their total please send a Cheque or Money Order do-nation made out to The Leu-kaemia Foundation c/o Jack Wickfeldt, PO Box 1584, Bairnsdale 3875 include your return address to re-ceive a Tax Deductable Leu-kaemia Foundation receipt (for $2 and over) .

These boys completed this walk hoping for “aware-

ness and compassion”. These 12 year old boys could have been watching TV or play-ing video games but they chose to try to make a dif-ference to increase aware-ness of how difficult it is for a family to cope with a sick child 3hrs away, in hospital for months, while also trying to balance the financial costs and time constraints of hold-ing together a family.

The boys achievement is a great example of the com-munity coming together to help young people realise the value of assisting others. Thank you to all those who have donated and supported these amazing young boys on their journey.

The Gippslander newspaper has now printed it’s 6th edition. We’re quite proud of ourselves and very thank-ful for all the support the Gippsland community has given us.

It hasn’t been an easy road, venturing out on a new project, into the unknown territory of print media.

We’ve consolidated a few successful ideas into the paper over these last 6 edi-tions.

The major coup is our insertion into the Gippsland Farmer every month.

Ten thousand copies go directly into the letterboxes of farmers throughout Gipp-sland.

If you’re a business that focusses on the farming community, then this is the perfect platform to display your goods and services in front of an avid readership.

Three Gippsland radio stations now advertise their full monthly program sched-

ules (see page 12) on a regu-lar basis.

Gippsland FM, 3 BBR FM and 3mFM Sth Gipps-land.

Our Market News pages with a detailed list of all mar-kets on around Gippsland has been hugely successful and very much appreciated by all market-goers and visi-tors to Gippsland.

Classifieds are next in line, with a very affordable range of options available for getting your goods ex-posed to potential customers for a full month, instead of the usual day or week.

Cantonese fried rice

“This delicious fried rice is a nice change of pace for leftover meat and veggies. It’s good made with your choice of ham, pork, or grilled chicken. I like to put the rice together early in the day then simply reheat it at suppertime. It’s already-tasty flavor seems to only improve with time!”

Ingredients:1-2 tblsp vege oil1 cup chopped onion1 minced clove garlic3 eggs lightly beaten1-2 cups cooked meat3 cups cooked rice3-4 green onions sliced1 cup bean sprouts2-4 tblsp soy sauce

Method:Heat oil in a large skil-

let or work. Saute finely chopped onion over medi-um-high heat for 2 minutes, then ad garlic and saute for

an extra 1 minute.Push onions and garlic to

side; pour eggs onto bottom of wok; cook and stir eggs for 1-2 minutes until firm; stir onions, garlic and eggs together.

Add meat, rice, green on-ions and any additional veg-gies you enjoy in a fried rice to the wok. Stir and toss un-til evenly mixed and almost heated through.

Add bean sprouts and soy sauce to wok; stir until heated through; server (or put away for later meals) and enjoy.

For variety, you may add (at the same time as the

meat) any of the following optional vegies.

Sliced mushrooms work well. Sliced water chestnuts, thinly sliced celery, snow peas, garden peas and car-rots.

Also chopped green capsicum peppers, finely shredded cabbage, or even slivered almonds to add that nutty taste and crunchy tex-ture.

Don’t be afraid to experi-ment. Check the fridge for leftovers or cuttings from vegetables not used in previ-ous dishes. Half a teaspoon of sesame oil will also add a distinct flavour.

NANCY’S NOTES

Howdy Folks! A Super October to y’allSpring certainly is in the air, isn’t it? Bill was just here and wanted to know if it is too early to plant his tomatoes. “How long is a piece of string?” It depends on so many factors; where you live, the position, variety and more. They not only don’t like frost and strong winds, but extreme heat will also burn the fruit. As you may already know, our “old wives lore for gardeners” suggests we sit with our bare bottoms in the veggie patch and if it’s not too cold, it is safe to plant or wait until the flowers are falling from your apple tree. The latter might be more neighbour friendly. Pollination and therefore fruit set are adversely affected by temperatures less that 15 degrees and more than 38 degrees at flowering. So suppose that is the more scientific way of looking at it, but the bare bottom theory still sounds like the most fun!

Maizey just walked in and didn’t get around to spraying her nectarine and peach for leaf curl this winter and wonders if there is anything that can be done this late. Of course there is! Maxi-crop or Seasol used as a foliar spray fortnightly will help check the disease as they contain a natural copper. Our gardeners of yester yore suggest she hang marshmallow weed or mothballs in the tree. Let us know how you go Maizy!

Lastly, Marg, you could try spraying your sprouts and cabbages with methylated spirits. ‘They’ say it will prevent the mildew that has been annoying you.

Have a great Spring! We’ll meet you in the veggie garden! Cheers and happy gardening!

As the weather warms up this month there is a lot more things that can be prepared for or planted. Unless you are wanting a crop for preserving, such as tomatoes, smaller plantings at regular intervals is the best option. This will ensure a more consistent sup-ply and spare you from a glut of produce.

1st week• Sow seed of carrots and parsnips,

lettuce, peas and spring onions.• Carrot seed is very fine and is

loved by ants. To stop ants pirating seed mix it with some pepper before you sow it. Mixing some sand with the seed will make it easier to sow the seed more thinly.

• Plant seedlings of cabbage, silver beet, lettuce

• Prepare a spot for your first sowing of beans.

2nd week• Sow seed of pumpkins, zucchinis

and cucumbers in small pots or the bottom tray of an egg carton.

Put one or two seed per pot or space. Keep the pots inside or in a warm, sheltered spot outside and protect from possible late frosts.

This will give you a head start when the weather is a bit warmer. Pumpkins, etc. re-sent any root disturbance so transplant care-fully.

If you are using egg cartons just separate and plant the whole cell. As with all seed/seedlings make sure that the soil in the con-tainers does not dry out.

Tomatoes and capsicums can also be raised the same way. They can be sown sin-gly in egg cartons or a number of seeds in a larger pot.

Sow the seed so the plants will be about

25mm (1”) apart when they grow. Just sow the seed on top of the soil mix and cover with a thin layer of mix.

Press down with your hand and then give a soft watering. Tomatoes are also very easy to grow from cuttings. We will get to that in later notes.

• Prepare places for planting toma-toes.

3rd week• Sow seed of peas and lettuce. Bush

beans, sweet corn can be sown in warmer areas of Gippsland.

• Plant early varieties of tomato if all danger of frost has passed.

4th week• Plant seed potatoes. ‘Certified’

seed potatoes are best as they are certified to be free of diseases that affect potatoes.

If you are unable to get ‘certified’ seed you can use pieces of ordinary potatoes. Make sure they have 3-4 ‘eyes’ on them.

To reduce the risk of diseases building up in your soil do not plant a new crop of the same thing in the same spot for at least two seasons.

• Prepare any available areas for later plantings.

Further Notes:Your local nursery or garden centre will

normally carry a good range of seeds, seed-lings and ‘certified’ seed potatoes at this time of the year.

There are many varieties of available: some for small spaces and some for large, some are bushy or ‘clumping’ and some need stakes or a place to run, some are ideal for fresh eating and some are good for pre-serving.

Read the labels and then if you’re still not sure, ask for advice.

These notes are a general guide and some areas of Gippsland will be warmer and other areas will be cooler, so check with your lo-cal gardeners for local knowledge.

Business InsightsCash flow is criticalto your survival

We thought it would be good to hear about the key issues facing busi-ness in the last quarter of 2012.

So we sat down for a Q & A session with three partners from Business In-sight Group: Jess Kemp, Alex Aeschlimann and Da-vid Lowe.

Editor: What are the big issues?

DL: Perhaps the most important thing to do right now is manage cash flow. In simple terms, that means keeping debtors under con-trol.

The national credit pro-viders tell us average pay-ment time is now 57 days.

That worries us. Aver-age payment time should be no more than 45 days. Proprietors must review debtors closely.

If more than 10% are in 60 days, there’s a problem. More than 5% in 90 days is a bigger problem.

JK: David’s right. We tend to be more generous about payment times in re-gional areas than our city cousins.

We shouldn’t be though. If you have an overdraft, you’re paying 10% in in-terest and fees. Why would you “lend” that money to your customers, free of charge, and then not chase it when it’s due?

Ed: OK – what else is important?

AA: Get your team members focused on your

existing customers. If you don’t take care of

them, one of your competi-tors will.

When turnover falls a bit, business people chase new customers very ag-gressively. You want to keep the ones you already have.

DL: Yes – and make sure your marketing spend is ef-fective. That doesn’t mean cutting back – it means ensuring every marketing dollar is working as hard as you do.

Old Butter Factory churns out ArtThe Artisans Store at the old butter factory in Mirboo

North, Gippsland, is now open for business. This has been a long

transformation of a beautiful old space being transformed into a showcase of exqui-sitely crafted local art.

This weeks profile artist is famed silversmith, John Frayne.

John grew up in the ru-ral South East of Ireland, an area rich in ancient mythol-ogy and traditional crafts.

He has exhibited both jewellery and stained glass works at craft fairs since the early ‘80s.

John setup workshop in 1987 in Perth and produced many fine Celtic Motif jew-ellery pieces.

Since then, John and his

family have lived in Bool-arra and feel privileged to be given the space at the Store for displaying his creations.

Other local artists have included Zoki Moro and Gigi Savon.

Gigi Savon is a new small business in Gippsland, that specialises in creating soaps from non toxic, non-glycer-ine based products.

Zoki was finding it diffi-cult to source soap and de-tergents that weren’t toxic to both humans and the earth.

So, starting in her kitch-en, her gorgeous range of soaps was born.

When antique clock collector David Raeburn moved to Bairnsdale in the early 1980’s he bought with him a large and varied collection of antique & rare clocks.

Little did he know that 20 years later he would be running the largest Clock Repair, Restoration and Sales showroom in Australia.

As word spread of his ability to repair clocks, the demand for his services grew to such a proportion that it could no longer fit into his home workshop.

The expansion required further repairers. In due course David was joined by his son Steve, followed by two other young men interested in the art of clock repair, Trevor Herbstriet and Peter Vandiesen.

Wooden and marble case restorations

Clocks, barometers & mechanical gramophones from all over Victoria found their way to the small workshop in Bairnsdale for repair or total restoration.

Wooden and marble case restorations were required, and local restorer Sandro Verdolini was enlisted to carry out this precise and very specialized work.

Further expansion in 2001 saw the business move to a new premises, a 1000 square metre showroom full of an astonishing array of clocks, antique furniture, collectables, pianos, music boxes, gramophones, barometers and even a classic car or horse drawn buggy is often available.

Also available is a large range of

keys, parts and accessories including clock movements and case plans.

In 2012 Bairnsdale Clocks moved once again, this time to a smaller showroom but a larger workshop at 603 Princes Highway Bairnsdale.

Sadly the Clock Museum is no longer on display, with David taking a break to enjoy some fishing & 4 wheel driving in between repairing cuckoo’s & barometers.

Barometers, music boxes, gramophones

The workshop repair section has now expanded to encompass repairs that arrive from all over Australia with approximately 1500 repairs and restorations completed annually.

Currently we repair all manner of clocks and watches barometers, music boxes, gramophones, and other clockwork items.

Free quotes are given to all customers prior to commencement of any repairs/restorations.

Trevor & Peter now competent clockmakers work fulltime in the Bairnsdale Workshop while Steve concentrates on the manufacture, repair & installation of Public and Town Clocks all over Australia.

A comprehensive list of other contractors, complete the team, making no task insurmountable.

Be sure to come into their new showroom and workshop on the Princes Hwy, Bairnsdale.

Many clock sales are now generated from the Bairnsdale Clocks website www.bairnsdaleclocks.com.au.

Most clocks are listed on the website with more to appear as they are overhauled and restored by their team of technicians.

They are also for sale in the Bairnsdale Store.

These same technicians are also available to carry out repairs from minor, to full restoration, on your treasured clocks and barometers.

Those whose interests lie in clocks & collectables can continue to check their website for recently updated sales listings.

For that elusive item you have been longing for, Bairnsdale Clocks are pleased to offer a free, no obligation search facility.

Customers are welcome to leave their details either over the counter, or via their contact form, so contact can be made if a suitable item becomes available for purchase.

The team of specialist restorers David Raeburn, the master horologist & owner of Bairnsdale Clocks, has had the pleasure of instructing two technicians, who currently work in his store workshop, continuing the traditional art of clock making. Trevor Herbstreit & Peter Vandiesen are both treasured members of Bairnsdale Clocks, working full time repairing clocks & time pieces. With over 1500 repairs completed annually, the workshop is always alive with the striking & chiming of both customers’ clocks and those being overhauled in readiness for sale display within the store.

Small Business Opportunity

Opportunity to have your own small business and shop in Cobb & Co Stables - Sale. Are you like me and have always wanted to be in business and have tried a number of times in very small ways but found it difficult on your own as there were so many hats to wear and different jobs to do to run a small business? So, does the idea of a co-operative retail/market/display and events venue appeal to you? The simple idea to give other 'little people' (like me) a place to have a go and be in a sup-portive and helpful environment. To be different and to make it work the venue needs to do lots of different things and to combine the advertising/marketing/promotion of all the shops into one louder voice.

Healthy Living

Gluten Free Batterbrings joy back toFish & Chip feasts

About 12 years ago, Guy Plateau, from Lakes Entrance was looking for a new product he could create. His reasons being, competition in the fast food industry was cut-throat and he was looking for something dif-ferent to focus his attention on.

First Guy tried playing around with different combinations of flours, when preparing his batter mixes in L’Ocean Fish & Chips, Lakes En-trance.

Without any great successes, he then happened to be discussing it with his doctor.

His doctor’s suggestions led him to start experimenting with different versions of a gluten free mixture.

At the time, there was not much interest in gluten allergies or their re-actions with different people. Gluten free dietry requirements were not as popular or well known.

After a few samples had been cre-ated, Guy sent them off for testing with the Coeliac Society.

Upon receipt of Guy’s samples they taste tested them and were pleasantly surprised.

Their first orders were for sending our samples to their clients, number-

ing at the time, only a few hundred Australia wide.

Since then, production has in-creased one hundred fold and Coe-liac sufferers Australia wide now purchase and insist on Guy’s original Health Wise Batter Mix.

About one year ago, Guy sold his business to Bill Boros.

Bill has been eager to continue Guy’s commitment to providing a healthy alternative to traditional bat-ter mixes sold by take away food out-lets.

Bill has not only continued the project, but increased distribution throughout the country considerably.

When you now order your fish and chips, if you see the Health Wise logo, make sure you request a “glu-ten free batter please.”

Full details on Health Wise Batter Mix can be found at www.crispybat-ter.com.au.
