ECHO East Africa Symposium

The recent ECHO Symposium in Arusha brought together people and organisations working to alleviate hunger and poverty in East Africa. fws permaculture manager Robert Cork presented on how the concepts of permaculture and sustainable living options can provide practical solutions for developing communities trying to attain self-sufficiency and increase income generation.

Corky was sent with the support of EnviroAg Australia Pty Ltd (his day bosses) and the Cotton On Foundation. John and Mudi also attended the conference, the conference bags were sewn by Kesho Leo's mamas and they were a big hit, and the whole event culminated with a site tour of Kesho Leo. Our energy systems (biogas and solar), as well as water storage and the organic vegies, were highlights.

Hongera (congratulations) to fws volunteers Robert Cork and Erin Cannon, who first met in Tanzania and will be married this weekend. The interactive curriculum that previous education manager Cindy developed is working a treat. The kids all look forward to Fridays for the hands-on experiences of the ‘world learning’ program… and why wouldn’t they?!

To culminate the 'Growing Things' unit, Chekechea teachers Regina, Lucy and Carmody thought it would be a treat to show the kids a different way to eat their fruit — in particular yummy yellow bananas.Regina explained how to make a banana milkshake while referring to a recipe poster. All the children stared in awe as the blender started to mash and swirl — and even mamas Sherida and Glady, who were helping out in the class, thought it was tamu (delicious)!

The children are now three weeks into their ‘Around The Pond’ unit and have tadpoles growing in the classroom, thanks to Simon who nabbed them with a net from the Kesho pond. The children have made frog puppets and are eagerly waiting to see the real things!

Sticking with the foodie theme (not that there are any plans to eat those frogs!) we are starting to serve porridge to all the Kesho Leo chekechea kids. For $18 you can feed a student a hearty breakfast for a year (see www.foodwatershelter.org.au/shoppinglist.aspx for details).

The kids go bananas

Step 1: Carmody sets up the table for some banana magic

Step 2: Moses reads the

Banana Milkshake recipe

Step 3: Rama is in charge

of the bananas

Step 4: Salumin pushes the

button – the blender is noisy!

Step 5: Milkshakes all round!

Salumin is impressed!

Simon on Misson: Tadpole!

When was your 3peaks3weeks climb?

2007 — it was the original climb organised by what is now the Peaks Foundation.

What was involved?Lots of fundraising and physical training.

What were the highlights?

Meeting wonderful, inspiring people. From the leaders, volunteers, mothers and children associated with the 3 grassroots organisations we raised the money for, to the guides and porters on the climb and the other nine girls I climbed with. All motivated by one goal, raising awareness and cash for the issues affecting Africa.

What did it mean to you?I volunteered in Africa at The School of St Jude, and helped establish fws, so I loved returning to Africa knowing I was further helping a community I had lived in, and learning about and helping two new ones.

What do you love about fws?

I love how fws provides not only basic needs, but also education and health facilities for women and children. Plus, I love that fws is eco-friendly and sustainable.

climb a mountain for fws

Fancy testing your physical and mental strength in support of fws?

This September, 12 inspiring women will embark on the challenge of ‘1 Peak 1 Week’ climbing to the roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, all with the aim of raising money for fws. Could you be one of them?

Our friends at the Peaks Foundation organise mountain-based adventure challenges in Africa, Asia and South America encouraging women from all over the world to make a positive social impact for three global issues; education, environment and health. This September they are directing all funds raised to fws!

For more information on how you can join this spectacular adventure, or to read more about the challenge, visit www.foodwatershelter.org.au/page250520.aspx

Meet Edwina, who climbed not 1, but 3 peaks – in 3 weeks!

Rain, rain, rain!

In the last couple of days the rains have started in Arusha. So? Well, it’s fantastic for crops/seedlings and John, our Tanzanian farm manager, might just be getting excited! Not to mention it’s a great opportunity to bust out the gumboots!

Not really thong weather, is it?!

Engo education – a team effort

The education providers in Engo-Sengui village are coming together in significant ways. Kesho Leo volunteers and the staff at the Engo (local government school) preschool are coming together every Friday to take part in weekly planning and organising. Teachers from each preschool have visited the other, to learn and share ideas to ensure the best education for all children in the Engo community.

Kesho Chekechea is benefiting from other partnerships too, with a Christian Brother volunteer helping out in our preschool every Thursday until June.

Trivia night success

The Kesho Leo team in Arusha (Pete, Brittany, Julia and Carmody) put on a trivia night at the local ‘Greek Club’ to raise some cash to keep KL ticking over. Pete did a fantastic job as MC. Carmo helped on the technical front. Big thanks to Laura Kearley for groundwork and to Craig and Brittany for following up. Fantastic prizes included a range of dinners at local restaurants. The silent auction included a Kilimanjaro trek for two and a stunning tsavorite gem from Swala Gem Traders.

The team made approx US$2300 or TSH3.5 million! Steve, an electrician from The School of St Jude, won first prize in our raffle — two nights in the presidential suite at Mount Meru Hotel. This was great karma, as Steve has been helping out at KL on the weekends with electrical work. There was a big turnout, big $$$ raised and big fun had by all!

Craig Twitt, 2010 finance manager. Not only did Craig keep our finances in order in Tanzania, he also enabled fws employees to engage in formal work contracts. Craig was often found running movie nights for the kids and hogging the ball on the soccer field. The kids miss you Craig, but welcome home to Australia, and thanks!

(goodbye)Kwaheri Tanzania

Julia Martin arrived in early March, from Birmingham, Alabama, to fill Craig’s shoes in finance. Brittany Douglas arrived in early February to assist the KL education manager with tuition, community English programs and she has dived headfirst into launching our new library project funded by the Francis Kealy Fund.

International Women’s Day

Mildura, Victoria, held its annual International Women’s Day function recently, which was a sell-out. Two local women, Roslyn Maye and Donata Carrazza, spoke on the topic of 'Giving and Doing'. Roslyn talked about her upcoming visit to World Vision children in Africa and our very own Kesho Leo, and Donata spoke on giving (which she has been doing for ages!) to fws. Roslyn was also thrilled to discover that 2011 Kesho Leo Education Manager Carmody Forbes is a local Mildura girl. The word continues to spread!

Our online shop is selling like hotcakes…

We've had some awesome sales on our online Shopping List: the Cotton On Foundation purchased a generator for $15000 (wow!), Karen Horne opted for a Kesho farm worker’s salary and on-costs over 3 months ($360), Ann Leith bought a scanner for KL ($165), Jackie Roszell donated $100 for livestock costs and Lorna Gow gave $55 for floor coverings, as a gift to her mum.

How about something as simple as petrol? Our trusty Land Rover (thanks, Planet Wheeler!) and super-dooper Hilux Ute are so important for helping Kesho Leo workers and volunteers work their magic. Next time you’re filling up, think about filling up for Kesho

Leo, too (tank of petrol $55). Also, now we have a generator, maybe you can see yourself purchasing the shed ($880) we need to keep it in?

To see all the goodies for sale, visit www.foodwatershelter.org.au/shoppinglist.aspx. Now with PayPal!

… but there's plenty left for you!

Craig's movie nights always drew a crowd

Golder Associates Corporation is a global ground-engineering and environmental services group. As part of its commitment to sustainability, it formed Golder Trust for Orphans in 2003, which supports sustainable development projects with a focus on services for orphaned or displaced children and families in Africa. This makes it

a perfect match with fws! In August 2009, Golder Trust generously agreed to contribute $26,800 that enabled fws to install a solar power system at Kesho Leo. Thank you!

In June 2009, the Goldman Sachs JBWere Foundation awarded a grant of $19,329 to fws for the fit-out of Kesho Leo’s bathroom, laundry, kitchen and sewing room. This enabled fws to deliver rainwater to the kitchen and buy cookware, benches, cupboards and even four kitchen sinks! Other items covered

included sewing machines to support a new small business, buckets, toilets, doors, a stepladder and a clothes line.

In 2007, Aussies For Orphans provided fws with grant funding to the tune of $36,000 to cover the costs of building accommodation for Kesho Leo's families. And in late 2009, AFO contributed another $1045 towards medical equipment and supplies for the health clinic. Thank you AFO!!

The Planet Wheeler Foundation has been incredibly generous to fws, providing the set-up costs for the Kesho Leo permaculture systems and grounds through a $36,000 grant that paid for things like the biogas system, sheds, livestock and irrigation systems that now provide food for our mamas and kids, and organic produce now sold to bring direct income

to Kesho Leo. In 2010 Planet Wheeler again shone with kindness by donating a further $20,000 to purchase a Land Rover 4WD for safely transporting the Kesho Leo residents. Planet Wheeler was also incredibly supportive in covering many of fws’s expenses relating to security upgrades in 2008, for which fws is deeply and eternally grateful.
