Animated Documentary Shorts
Tis series has been generously sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada and actica Interactive
In the early stages of the second century
of cinema, short form documentary has
explored new technologies and expand-
ed conventional expectations of what
is accepted within the documentary form.
Fusing documentary with its antithesis in
lmmaking holds incredible potential in ac-
cessing bolder ways of exposing the real.
The convergence o documentary and animation seems oxymoronic. One orm, bound to capturing truth, the other built upon whims o imagi-
nation and artistic expression. While only a ew examples o eature length
animated documentaries exist (Waltz with Bashir, Persepolis), the short orm
has delivered an explosion o new flms over the past decade. Canadian
flmmakers have made the most o our cinematic strengths, where our larg-
est contributions to flmmaking exist (undeniably tied to the National Film
Board). Academy Award winningRyan (2004, Chris Landreth) brought at-
tention to this used flm orm and Cattle Call(2008, Matthew Rankin/MikeMaryniuk) endures as a stunning example o independent experimenta-
tion. Digital animation applications, expanding orms o documentary, and
interdisciplinary flmmakers have coalesced into an exploration o creative
options available through animation that best serve their chosen documen-
tary subjects. e short orm permits experimentation in flmmaking that
eature flms tend to avoid.
What do short flms achieve in combining two orms that existed on sepa-
rate cinematic practices and analysis or so long? What is better achieved
through animating the real? What remains o documentary convention?
Rotoscopy is a comortable starting point to understand how these
cinematic orms intertwine. Beginning with recorded ootage o the real,
rotoscopy breaks down the moving image into single rames. In its simplest
orm, these rames are copied by tracing single images to create duplicates
that can be altered (including or excluding detail rom the original). is
process is paradoxical, because although it transitions the real into theanimated world o creative, subjective interpretation - taking it urther away
rom its supposed objectivity and existence - it also makes the artifce o flm-
making more apparent, highlighting a truth. e subject in the original image
is a recording, no longer real but only a reerence. Tracing over that subject
and showing a drawing o it is not that removed rom what was recorded.
is animation technique makes us conscious that we are viewing artifcial
movement/presence and that cinema is an intermediary. Awareness o the
flmmaking process delivers a greater truth where the illusion is laid bare.e animated flms o Bob Sabiston and Marie-Jose Saint-Pierre use
orms o rotoscopy to create character portraits o real lie personalities.

ABOVE:Te Sapporo Projectby Marie-Jose Saint-Pierre
Saint-Pierre employs a minimalist visual approach o monochromatic out-
lines to create a contrast between the character and setting, urther remov-
ing it rom recognizable similarities to the real. is works to great eect in
her portraits o animator Norman McLaren in McLarens Negatives (2006)
and e Sapporo Projects (2010) study o Japanese calligrapher Gazanbou
Higuchi. A live action documentary o these individuals would separate the
viewer rom the artists practice, even i we were to observe them in studio.
e use o rotoscopy to illustrate their creative characteristics gives Saint-
Pierre the opportunity to show (more than tell) us about the art and mean-
ing her subjects wish to express. It becomes an examination o the internal
as opposed to external. e synthesis between the subjects artistic truth
and a creative expression o it by the flmmaker is a chance to see beyondthe physical and better understand the subjects philosophical identity. is
counters a more objective scientifc approach common to live action docu-
mentary whereby the art-making practice is recorded but stays at a distance
rom where the artistic philosophy exists. Witnessing the physical does not
always translate into revealing the truth documentary seeks. I anything,
rotoscopy becomes a translation o that truth, something more easily and
deeply comprehensible.
Bob Sabistons animation employs a more vibrant and layered palette.
Snack and Drink(1999) ollows Ryan Power, a unique teenage boy on his walk
to a 7-Eleven or a Double Gulp. Using the original video audio recording as
the soundtrack, Sabiston keeps us connected to reality with the authenticity
o Ryans likes and dislikes in a casual conversation. He juxtaposes this by
creatively interpreting the visuals through rotoscopy, sometimes transorm-
ing the shape and movement o Ryan into a complete abstraction. Ryans
voice remains a constant as the visual tone o the flm makes great leaps.
e gap thats created between what we hear as real, and what we see as
surreal is where the strongest opportunity or a reading into the meaning othis documentary exists. I it were just a three minute video recording o this
quotidian walk, it would leave the viewer with much less to contemplate.
Instead, the space between the real and surreal creates an expanded realm
or contemplation and interpretation. In this way, these animated documen-
taries heighten our sense o real, by exploring what exists beyond the physi-
cal and examining the cerebral.
is gap between real and surreal extends into Sabistons flm Grass-
hopper (2004). Taking what would otherwise be a straight orward talking
head interview, the type amiliar to most documentaries, Grasshoppers
use o rotoscopy transorms a monologue into something ar more visually
interesting. Whereas the original source material relies solely upon the inter-
view as an aural devise, the animated interview heightens our response to
what is being said. Stimulating our visual senses creates a greater interac-
tion with the subjects message. We, as viewers, are cognizant it is not an
entirely accurate depiction o the individual talking, but it is a very eective
method to illustrate the concepts being discussed in a philosophy flm.
Rotoscopy is not tied entirely to recordings o the real that are visu-
ally altered. Saint-Pierres flm Passages (2008) moves away rom existing
documentary ootage to become an entirely re-enacted portrayal o a very
personal story. Its frst person narration recounts Saint-Pierres process
o giving birth to her frst child and is an examination o a aulted medical
system. I confned to traditional documentary methods, this flm would lack
the emotional core and greater truth that it seeks to expose. Not shying
away rom the creative exibility that animation oers, she anthropomor-
phisizes the doctors to more accurately depict her experience. is frst per-son account alls more within the documentary convention o re-enactment.
Re-enactment has long held a place in documentary practice, where one
accepts the reprisal o actual events as actual. By placing the personal into
an animated orm that is subjective, there is a more complete expression o
honesty. Personal stories are immediately subjective, so a alse agreement
is set up in documentaries that employ objective observation to establish
individual truth. Passages avoids this manipulation, conronting subjectivity
not as something to be distrusted, but allowing Saint-Pierre to be completely
honest about her experience, permitting the viewer to share in the rustra-
tion, ear, anger and love that are the core o the flm.

truth seeking - an examination o internal issues about external presences.
Seeing Dormans perspective on her relationship and childhood through her
drawings, the animation reveals a truth that exists beyond the surace, ft-
tingly capturing a reality that is more than skin deep.
Suckersh (2004, Lisa Jackson) continues the use o animation to enhance
personal story telling. Although Suckerfsh is a mixed live action/animated
flm, its animation sequences play a critical role in portraying past childhood
events and a portrait o mother-daughter relationship. Fragmented memo-
ries come alive through mixed-media animation that helps establish the
tone o the re-enactments. Re-enactments ask us to accept actors as repre-sentations o people as they once existed. e trappings o fction become
apparent, and in the case
o very personal stories,
the presence o strangers
portraying our closest re-
lations becomes a barrier
to revealing the honesty
that is critical to this orm o documentary. Animating these memories is not
about complete actual accuracy, but an interpretation o how these memo-
ries aect the present.
Jacksons recent flm Te Visit(2009) utilizes an audio recording o amily
members recollecting a shared experience o witnessing a bright light in the
night sky. is shared event is enhanced through an animated storyline. is
better depicts the occasion than live action re-enactments, which moves
the flmmaking urther toward fction and less toward revealing the greater
truth or meaning o the flm one o documentarys true ambitions. Te Visit
shares with Flawed, McLarens Negatives, Te Sapporo Project, Grasshopperand Snack and Drink, a commitment to the subjects existence in a shared
world through its audio track narration, but departs into the creative world
by visually expanding upon the meaning o the narration. is is not to say
there is only a single way o reading or understanding these flms. I any-
thing, the animation invites the viewer into a broader realm o introspection
and contemplation, but retains a connection to the real through narrated
soundtracks. The gap between what is seen and what is heard creates a
paradox that the viewer must negotiate to determine what they value as
truth. is contradiction is a powerul tool in documentary, and oers great
potential or evolving the orm.
e subjective personal orm o documentary evolves in contrast to the
frm objective scientifc approach o observation that presents image as act,
and flmmaking as the purest orm o articulating truth. e sterility o this
objective orm o flmmaking prevents documentary rom ocusing on deeper
understandings o what it means to be human rom emerging. It is in this
area that animated documentary has played a critical role in advancing the
subjective personal orm.
Flawed(2010, Andrea Dorman) is a playul twist o animation, with Dor-
man painting cartoonish static images, seen through time lapse photog-
raphy that correspond with frst person narration about her relationshipwith a plastic surgeon and moral dilemma with his occupation. Including
her hand using an ink brush provides a specifc connection between author
and the subject, increasing the personal tone and nature o the flm. Dor-
mans drawings are reminiscent o those ound in childrens books, yet her
commentary on physical appearance ocuses our attention squarely on an
issue that preoccupies adults. e drawings prevent the viewer rom judging
individual body images by never showing us photographic imagery o the
people she talks about, including hersel. Instead, we see the parts o the
body she dwells on through exaggerated caricatures. I we were to be staring
at the subjects who undergo surgery to transorm themselves while listening
to her narration, the tone o the documentary shis to the scientifc or alsely
objective, which is not the goal o this flm. Ethical issues are the centre o its

As producers and users o copyrighted material, documentarians have a
stake on both sides o the copyright argument. Although documentarians
want to protect their materials, they also want to be able to access
copyrighted materials or their productions, and do so in a air and
permissible manner. Existing provisions to the copyright law includes Fair
Dealing, which allows or use o copyrighted material or fve activities:
criticism, review, private study, research and news reporting. Documentary
flmmakers have had trouble ftting their art into these fve exclusive
categories, and so do their lawyers. As a result, flmmakers choose to
clear the rights rather than make a case or the air dealing deense.
DOC recently published Guidelines to Documentary and Fair Dealingand now
aims to engage the production community in a dialogue to discuss what
constitutes best practices or documentary and air dealing. is panel
