4/5/6 Warriors

This term 4/5/6 Warriors have been busy learning in history about a controversial Australian legend and a talented Australian Bush Artist .We commenced our lesson by painting Pro Hart’s impression of Ned Kelly. Then we learnt that Ned Kelly was the son of a convict who was a horse thief. We also now know that Ned Kelly was a man the people of the 1880s either loved or hated.

Pro Hart began his adult life as miner at Broken Hill drawing pictures for the other miners underground. He sold his first paintings from a hotel for 40pounds. Over his life time he has won many accolades for his art. He has an Art Gallery in Broken Hill filled with his paintings. We found these two famous Australians interesting and that history can be fun.

Fish Outta Water Performance

On Friday morning we had the Fish Outta Water Performance. The performer Shelly forgot to complete her homework assignment on the history of the Olympics. The very energetic Shelly used drama and gymnastics to demonstrate how the first Olympics started in Greece and how important Cathy Freeman was in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The show was very interactive.

Our beautiful class has been working hard in all areas and we are extremely proud of their behaviour and work ethic.

In writing we are starting to use creative punctuation such as exclamation marks, question marks and speech marks. We are also using adjectives and paragraphs.

During maths we have been practising our “friends of 10”, counting backwards from 100 and learning about measuring length and mass. Next, we are going to focus on reading time to the half hour and saying the number that comes before numbers up to 100.

We have also been working on our independent computer skills, learning to log onto and navigate around the Mathletics program on the computers and iPads.

During our Wiradjuri lesson Auntie Iris spoke to us about her childhood at Balladoran and brought in some dolls she made. We have decided to make some and display them at NAIDOC day in Term 3. They are still under construction, however we’d like to show you our work to date.

Kind regards, Catherine Dunn and Michelle Leven

The Wise Owls and Dolphins visit the Warrumbungles…

Students from the Wise Owls and Dolphins classes recently had a visit to the Environmental Education Centre at the Warrumbungle National Park. Students from Coonabarabran Public School’s MC Unit also joined the excursion where we went on a bush walk and engaged in learning about the importance of taking care of our environment through maintaining our use of resources. We found clues along our journey which instigated interesting discussions and triggered learning outcomes.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch with our new friends from CPS where we talked all about where we live, who’s in our families and things we like to do in Gilgandra. This was a very worthwhile experience for our students and we aim to continue to further develop these new relationships.

Year One Monkeys have been working hard, learning about respecting and helping each other. We read the story ‘Clancy the Courageous Cow’ and discussed that everyone is different and that is OK. We decided to paint our own cow

We’ve been using lots of different materials and objects to learn about length, area and volume which has been really fun.

We have been really enjoying learning Wiradjuri with Aunty Iris. She told us a story using puppet animals and we learnt Wiradjuri names for them.

School Debating Team

Is Australia the lucky Country?

Gilgandra Public School presented a convincing debate lastTuesday against Broken Hill Public School ‘that Australia is the Lucky Country’. The team was confident and ready to challenge their opposition in rebuttal and took the win for the day. Well done debaters and thank you to Mrs Lacey for her wonderful adjudication skills.

NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge

On Wednesday 8th June four students represented our school in Dubbo at the NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge. The topic was Songlines the Living Narrative of our Nation. Each team consisted of two students and together they created a speech that ran for four minutes. Their speech was about what songlines is and what it means to them. Special guests, Luke Carroll and Allan Hall, were the adjudicator and time keeper respectively. Well done Jack Chandler, Monique Knight, Landon Ashby and Isha Aro. You represented our school with pride and many positive comments were made about your behaviour and dress.
