Gilda’s Club Rochester Opportunities for Involvement

Our mission is to create a warm and welcoming community of free emotional and social support for everyone living with cancer—men, women, teens and children—along with their families and friends. Our innovative program is an essential complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, workshops, educational and social activities. We are here to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.

Gilda’s Club Rochester Our Mission and Vision

Why Choose Gilda’s Club?

We are ….

All programs provided by Gilda’s Club are available at no cost, thanks to the generosi ty of individuals and community par tners l ike you. Your support allows us to help our friends, families, and neighbors cope with the impact of a cancer diagnosis.

The Value of our Work: Benefits of Emotional &

Psychosocial Support Gilda’s Club Rochester fills an extremely important niche on the c a n c e r c a r e c o n t in u u m . O ur Customized Member Plan, Distress Assessment Tool and our ongoing support programs are significant resources that Gilda’s Club provides as part of our proven care model and our partnership within the Greater Rochester community.

In recent studies, cancer patients who receive psychosocial

support experience:

56% increase in quality of life and survival rates

50% reduction of recurrence

50% decrease of depression, anxiety and isolation After a median of 11 years, 66% of women with breast cancer who received psychosocial intervention had positive health

benefits and were found to be disease free.

Unique. Gilda’s Club Rochester Free Social and Emotional Support

Our programs are designed for the whole family, not just for the person living with cancer

Gilda’s Club is for anyone facing any kind of cancer and their caregivers

We serve more than 1,200 men, women, teens and children touched by cancer

All dollars raised stay in our community to directly support families facing cancer

June 17, 2011. I was at work to keep busy from thinking about my

biopsy the day prior. My husband and I were hoping that the call would

be good news. Instead it threw our lives into a whirlwind of

appointments and testing. I had stage IIB Invasive Ductal Carcinoma,

Breast Cancer. How could this be? We had family summer vacations planned;

a trip to Disney; I was only 36! The feeling upon receiving that call is

something beyond words. Chemotherapy started 10 days after I was

diagnosed; I had a double mastectomy right before Thanksgiving. More

unexpected news: 1 out of 4 lymph nodes had cancer. Now radiation

was on the table, more surgery, and months of treatments. This is when

I realized my children, then ages 10, 7, 4, and 1, needed help through

this life "hiccup" as much as I did.

Many organizations support the diagnosed person, and possibly their

spouse, but to find a place that supports whole families with any type of

cancer is amazing. This is Gilda's Club. They helped me through

support groups, where I met people who have traveled a similar

journey. After just one visit to the clubhouse, and to Noogieland, I could

see in the faces of my children happiness that had been missing. Even

when no words about this disease were spoken, they found comfort in being around peers that were dealing with a

story similar to theirs. My husband and I have had accomplishments we would have never dreamed of because of

Gilda's Club’s support. Together we completed the 2012 Rochester Half Marathon with Gilda's Gang, just 5 months

after I finished radiation.

It still shocks me to think that I have my own cancer story. It is not only a disease fought by the diagnosed, but by all

who love them. Fighting cancer goes on after treatment finishes, and this is why Gilda's Club is so important to our

family. The physical, mental, and emotional support has relieved us of stress and worry.

With all of the free programs they offer, we did not have to choose to participate if we could afford it – we could come

as much as we needed at no cost to us. We will forever be indebted to Gilda's for their support and love of our family.

Media & Branding Our Community Reach

Social Media

Our social media presence is consistently growing and enhancing our effectiveness within the community—and beyond. Based on your level of support, recognition will comprise all social media platforms. Increased partnership with community leaders and organizations broadens our reach, for events and programs alike.

Website

In 2015, we launched our updated and state-of-the-art website to better serve our members and community partners. Our new interface provides ease of access and navigation to those looking to get support or give support. We’re also not reliant on a third-party firm for updates, meaning additions are made in a timely fashion to maximize value and support.

E-Mail Communication

In an increasingly digital age, we all recognize the importance of a vast e-mail network and organized database. Through strong community engagement, our database continues to grow, creating an elevated platform for e-communication to promote events, community partnerships, programs, clubhouse news, and more.

Throughout the year, we offer hundreds of programs for men, women, teens, and kids impacted by cancer. Our in-house programs provide outlets for expression and avenues for support through our variety of programs. These include support groups, cooking courses, art classes, and health & wellness programs. You can help us ensure that our members feel support when they need it most. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. In 2016 we had over 360 volunteers assist Gilda’s Club Rochester with program, administra-tive needs and working at various events.

One of the key ways in which successful companies engage their employees is through volunteerism. These companies sponsor or facilitate opportunities for employees to work in the i r com m uni t ies as p rou d representatives of their employers — doing work they are excited about, creating tangible impact, and wearing the company brand.

Gilda’s Club Rochester offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Your time and talent can be put to use in many wonderful ways, including:

Answering the phones

Door greeters

Administrative tasks/mailings

Program Assistants

Community Chefs dinner

Baking treats for various groups or programs

Volunteerism How Your Employees Can Give Back

Next year, more than 4,500 of our friends, family and neighbors around Rochester will hear the words, “You have cancer.” These words can be devastating. But with Gilda’s Club by their side, we can make this journey together. Your gift makes our work possible. Every gift counts and your support makes a world of a difference for so many men, women, teens, and kids whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Thank you for considering Gilda’s Club Rochester in your annual giving!
