Gilda’s Club Evansville is a 501(c)(3) founded in 2008 to

provide a home-like, non-residential meeting place where men, women and children living with cancer, and their families and friends, can join with others to build social and emotional support as an integral part of cancer treatment. The mission of GCEV is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. GCEV will serve people from Southwest IN, Southeastern IL and Northwestern KY. We are an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community (CSC), a global organization providing psychosocial cancer support to tens of thousands of people, through a network of nearly 50 US affiliates, a Research and Training Institute, and advo-cacy partnerships with medical and governmental leaders. Together, we share a vision that no one faces cancer alone.

Why the Tri-State needs Gilda’s Club Evansville: Cancer is EVERYWHERE. There are cur-rently 12 million men, women and children living with cancer in the U.S. with 1.4 million new diagnoses each year. From 2000-2004 there were 21,451 new cases of cancer right here

in the Tri-State area. A groundbreaking report published in October 2007 by the Institute of Medicine , Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs, concludes that addressing psychosocial needs is not a nice-to-have. It is essential and should be an integral part of quality cancer care. Within the past two years alone, further validation for Gilda’s Club programming has come from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. Both are publicly advocating the importance of Gilda’s Clubs across the country as valuable community partners in cancer treatment. Ours will soon be one of these communities! Completely free of charge, GCEV will provide a varied menu of cancer support services through five core program components offered in a clubhouse setting. 1) Support services: networking and support groups, facilitated by licensed, specifially trained mental health professionals, 2) Educational programs: lectures and workshops, 3) Healthy lifestyle activities: nutritional education, exercise and physical activities (yoga, tai chi), mind-body stress reduction programs, and expressive arts, 4) Social and recreational activities: potlucks, family fun nights, movie nights, and more, 5) Resources and referral: information online and in print from the Resource Library and personalized assistance from staff members. It’s cancer support for the whole family the whole time. Children are included with tailored support programs and spaces just for them.

At the heart of every Gilda’s Club is the Clubhouse, not just a meeting place, but the most visible and enduring symbol of the Gilda’s Club philosophy and program. It is a warm, homelike setting where members feel comfortable and relaxed. GCEV has pur-chased the John W. Boehne Home, 1119 Lincoln Ave. in Evansville. This historic home meets our needs perfectly with a welcoming, homelike appearance, ample parking and central location away from the unpleasant sights and smells of medical facilities.
