50 Years of SuccessRepresenting HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah attended the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Gulf Insurance Company. The event was held at Sheikha Salwa Al Sabah Hall, Marina Hotel. HH Sheikh Nawaf was greeted upon arrival by GIC’s Chairman Mr Farqad Al Sane, Vice Chairman Mr Faisal Al Ayyar, MD & CEO Mr Khaled Al Hasan and Board Members.

The ceremony was attended by former Parliament Speaker Mr Jassem Al Kharafi, members of the ruling family, Deputy Chief of the National Guard Sheikh Meshaal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, HH Sheikh Nasser Al Mohammad Al Ahmad Al Sabah, HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah, Deputy Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Ali Al Jarrah Al Sabah and senior officials.

Addressing the audience, Mr Al Sane said, “On behalf of GIC, I express sincere appreciation to Your Highness for gracing us with your presence despite your great responsibilities. This reflects your interest and support of the Kuwaiti private sector, without which private Kuwaiti institutions would not have achieved local and regional success.”

He added, “It is our pleasure to be celebrating GIC’s Golden Jubilee alongside the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the State of Kuwait. We are also launching our new identity, uniting our regional companies for the first

time under one brand, which we believe reflects our journey of success from small beginnings to becoming one of the region’s biggest insurance companies.”

Mr Al Sane explained that GIC has gone from being a single-office company in 1962 to having more than 70 offices in nine Arab countries today, and from having seven employees to more than 1700. With less than 100 clients 50 years ago, the regional company has grown to have around half a million. “All of this was achieved by taking calculated risks and employing rational, highly-skilled management that has made us a competitor at the local and regional levels.”

KIPCO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ORIX Corporation – the biggest non-bank financial services group in Japan.

The two companies intend to establish a strategic alliance for the development of leasing and financial services in the MENA region. The MoU between KIPCO and ORIX also includes an intention to carry out a feasibility study to explore the formation of a leasing company in Algeria.

Representatives from both companies signed the MoU at an official ceremony in Kuwait. They said the synergies between KIPCO and ORIX will allow them to combine their expertise and experience in an expansion of their operations within the MENA region.

Chairman, Mr Faisal Al Ayyar said, “ORIX is one of the world’s biggest financial services companies and we are very pleased they have agreed to explore business opportunities with KIPCO. Their expertise, combined with our knowledge of the MENA region, will allow us to assess the potential of the leasing model in some of our key markets. Our intention to study the viability of a leasing company in Algeria is based upon our positive experiences there. Algeria has a business-friendly environment and huge potential for this type of business. I am delighted to welcome Mr Miyauchi and his team to Kuwait and sign this MoU between our two companies.”

ORIX Corporation’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Yoshihiko Miyauchi said, “I am very happy to visit Kuwait and to have entered into a partnership with KIPCO. KIPCO and ORIX share

the same business philosophy and objectives and we have today laid the foundation for a long and mutually beneficial relationship. For ORIX, the MENA region is an important market and we hope to expand strongly here in collaboration with KIPCO. Throughout the world, leasing has played an important role in establishing industrial infrastructure and job creation through the development of small and medium-sized businesses. However, in the MENA region the penetration of the leasing concept is still low. We believe through our venture with KIPCO, we will not only establish successful businesses, but will also contribute to the economies of the countries we will operate in.”

Although our profits show only a slight year-on-year increase, our companies are demonstrating a high degree of resilience to difficult market conditions. Dejean Quartet perform at AUK

AUK’s Department of Music and Drama, under the auspices

of the German Embassy in Kuwait, presented the Dejean

Quartet. The ensemble of flute, violin, viola, and cello are

all members of the prestigious Kassel State Orchestra in

Germany.

Over 200 students and outside guests were in attendance

as the group performed, discussed their instruments, and

answered questions. One student had the opportunity to

try his hand at conducting the ensemble, which resulted

in quirky, fun filled performance, to the delight of the au-

dience. Afterwards, each musician worked independently

with small groups of specialized music students, helping

them to hone their craft.

Dr Lisa Urkevich, Chair of the Department of Music and

Drama said, “The event was a great success. It provided

a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact with

musicians of the finest caliber, learn about other cultures,

and expand their horizons. Our thanks goes to the German

Embassy for their efforts in keeping these quality arts alive

and sharing them with our community.”

AUK hosts 7th annual awareness week

The Office of Student Life at AUK organized its 7th Annual Awareness Week. Each day of Awareness Week concentrated on a specific topic, including self-awareness, community outreach awareness and political awareness.

The first day included an interactive self-awareness workshop, coordinated by the Office of Student Life, Center for Career Services and Wellness and the Psychology Department at AUK. The workshop aimed at getting students together from different backgrounds, as well as helping them define ‘Who They Are’.

The second day saw the AUK Volunteers Program, organize ‘Refuse to be Ordinary.’ The program is an attempt to provide students with the information and the opportunity they need to be significant contributors to the Kuwaiti community through service.

The Awareness Week extended to include two main events: K’S PATH volunteer trip and KAACH Orientation and Training. Over 80 students visited the K’S PATH shelter, located in Al-Wafra, during an open day organized by the shelter. Students had the chance to see the premises and interact with K’S PATH staff, volunteers and animals. Students learnt about the different animals housed at the shelter, how they were rescued, how they are being taken care of, as well as adoption and sponsoring procedures.

In addition, there were more than 60 students who attended the KAACH orientation and training. The orientation provided volunteers with information about KACCH’s activities, expectations of volunteers and volunteer duties.

PKC celebrates Diwali

Pulsar Knowledge Centre (PKC) celebrated ‘Diwali’, the festival of lights signifying brightness, happiness, love, peace and fun.

The celebrations began with employees making donations to an NGO that reuses and recycles items for the use of the underprivileged. Another NGO set up a kiosk in the office premises to sell a wide range of products like decorative ‘diyas’ (earthen lamps) and

candles, carry bags, greeting cards and other items. Both the initiatives were a success.

The office premises were decorated with colourful lights, balloons, flowers, ‘rangolis’ (designs and patterns made with colour) to complete the festive look. Everyone wore bright, traditional attire (women in their ‘sarees’ or ‘salwar kameez’ and men in ‘kurtas’) adding vibrancy to the celebrations.

Various games associated with this festival including card games, tambola and lucky draws were organized and everyone participated enthusiastically. The employees also voted for the best traditionally dressed male and female colleague. The winners went home with gifts and goodies after having sumptuous snacks and traditional sweets.

KIPCO INTERNS

URC partners with Kuwait Fund on internship program

Out of valuing their social responsibility towards the development of the Kuwaiti society, URC provided internship opportunities for two young Kuwaitis enrolled in the ‘Engineering and Architecture Program’ of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED). The KFAED program extends for 13 months; four months of soft-skill training, followed by a six-month internship abroad, and finally a three-month internship in Kuwait.

CSRKIPCOLife had the opportunity to speak to Ms Renimah Al Mattar, URC’s Executive Vice President, who said that mentoring KFAED interns presents youth with the opportunity to get real-life experience and exposes them to the real estate development sector.

“Here, the interns are exposed to new concepts and ideas, and they are challenged to use their analytical skills and come up with solutions to the problems we present them with. We also bear a great responsibility, because these interns go on to become ‘ambassadors’ of URC and it is up to us to build our reputation platform through them,” she explained.

Such internships also support a pipeline of future talent who gain first-hand experience in working in a reputed company with a culture that embraces a team-based approached, fosters communication and builds lasting stakeholder relationships.

Civil EngineeringEach of the KFAED interns was assigned a mentor. Eng. M. Yaser Al Dannan, URC’s Senior Projects Director, mentored Nour Al Homoud, who graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Kuwait University.

“Since joining us, Nour has been involved in the painting, tiling and washroom renovation at Marina Mall. This has included numerous site visits, following up with contractors, and maintaining quality and specifications,” Eng. Al Dannan told KIPCOLife. “She is also learning about contract documentation and the planning and scheduling of projects.”

These skills are critical to a civil engineer, and Nour is acquiring first-hand experience on how to approach similar projects, as well as achieving the end value of the project.

“Nour is a smart young woman who is willing to learn. This positive attitude, along with her strong performance, will guarantee her a very successful future,” he said.

ArchitectureThe second intern, Khalid Al Awadhi, graduated with a degree in Architecture from Kuwait University. He was mentored by Eng. Mohammed Al Soury, Architect with URC’s Design and Development Department.

“The objective of any internship is to give the intern a glimpse of what the real world is like. I have been working with Khalid on three main areas; introducing the architect’s responsibilities in the field of real estate, project management, and elements related to improving design skills,” Eng. Al Soury explained.

Khalid was involved in the interior design of the ground floor of Al Shaheed Tower, as well as the gym and café on the M3. He also worked on the shop drawings for the washroom renovation project at Marina Mall. This included on-site assistance and site reports.

“Tenant layout design is very important, which is why I got Khalid involved in the Salalah Gardens Mall in Oman, for which he also revised the ‘Souk’ drawings. For Abdali Mall in Jordan, the intern is working on redesigning some elements on the third and fourth floors,” Eng. Al Soury added.

InternsKIPCOLife also met with the interns to get a glimpse of the internship experience from their perspective. Khalid explained that there were three different careers pathways an architect could pursue – working with a building owner, a consultant/designer, or a contractor. “My experience with URC has shown me what it means to work as a representative of the owner of the building. I now understand company hierarchy and the different roles within it.”

Asked about his experience, Khalid said, “My time with URC has exceeded my expectations; my experience has been motivational and inspiring. When I first joined I knew nothing about real estate development, and now I am working on my own designs. My design for the gym and cafeteria on the M3 of Al Shaheed Tower will be presented to URC management and may well be implemented!”

He added that he very much appreciated having the opportunity to be mentored at URC, saying that this experience helped him understand himself, the options available to him as an architect and to decide on a career path. Moving forward, he now sees himself working at an “architectural studio” where he would design a project and then follow through with its implementation.

As for Nour, she said that as a civil engineer she tended to work in real estate companies more than contracting companies. “URC has a good reputation in Kuwait and owns main projects in the country, which is why I chose to intern with them. I now have a better understanding about the operation of engineering firms and office standards in the private sector.”

Another important thing that Nour learnt is the conditions that preserve the rights and obligations of each of the owners of a project and the contractors assigned to do the project. “This is important as I was part of the supervision on the job site and checking work schedule of the workers.”

She also said that the internship has helped her decide on a career path. “This has been a challenging experience through which I got to know myself and the professional world better. I also met potential employers and built up a network of contacts. This experience helped me to develop my social skills, such as the ability to work in a team, deal with conflicts and assert myself.”

More importantly, internships improve career prospects because employers expect applicants to have practical professional experience, and this is what URC has provided to both Khalid and Nour!

Al Sharrad: Emphasis on talent recruitment

Mr Khaled Al Sharrad was appointed Group Chief Human Resources & Administration Officer in mid-2012. KIPCOLife had the opportunity to meet with Mr Al Sharrad, who spoke about his new role and the opportunities at hand.

37

KIPCO INTERVIEW

Group objectives“In his famous book ‘Winning’, Jack Welch mentioned that ‘.. the head of HR should be the second most important person in any organization.’ KIPCO Group consists of more than 60 companies operating in 26 countries, operating across multiple regulatory and labor environments. Therefore, my main role is to oversees all human resource activities across the Group and assist the transformation of the HR function into a strategic business partnership role aligned with the company’s overall objectives,” Mr Al Sharrad explained.

His responsibilities include assisting Group companies in developing HR plans and strategies to support the achievement of overall business objectives; providing leadership and guidance to Group HR functions by overseeing talent acquisition, career development succession planning, retention and compensation and benefits; advising Group executives regarding key organizational and management issues; and working with Group Admin heads on improving general services such as logistics, purchasing facilities management, communication services and corporate governance.

CoordinationAsked about opportunities for Group cooperation and coordination in the fields of HR and Admin, Mr Al Sharrad said, “There are plenty of opportunities for effective cooperation and coordination amongst Group companies especially in the fields of recruitment, training and logistics services.”

One example of such Group collaboration was the signing of the ‘Recruitment Search Agreement’ by the core Group companies collectively with Bayt.com. “This was very successful experience and proved that working together as one team can be cost effective and beneficial to each company.”

The Group HR Committee will be identifying areas of improvement by conducting an HR diagnostic analysis across KIPCO’s core companies, assessing their current status and working towards the required level of standardization and unification across the Group.

Investing in employeesOn investing in employees, Mr Al Sharrad said, “Our employees are our most valuable asset, and KIPCO is investing in its employees through education and training. This will bring valuable benefits to both the employees and the shareholders. Research has shown that investing in our people leads to engagement, which results in increased productivity and lowering costs.”

He added, “By putting a system in place that enables your employees to connect seek knowledge in any topic inside or outside of the company, you will not only be increasing their loyalty to your business but also insuring that your employees have access to new ideas and technology that will make your business a leader in the field.”

Talent managementKIPCOLife asked Mr Al Sharrad about the talent management initiatives that will be put in place to guarantee that

the KIPCO Group is hiring the best people. He said, “Talent management is typically one of the most important responsibilities of all heads of HR. We need to hire the right people to lead our companies, people of top talent who are dedicated to their jobs and believe in excelling in what they do.”

In order to do so, KIPCO Group needs to develop an employment brand that reflects our vision for the future. This will give the Group a reputation as being a ‘great place to work’, which in turn helps in hiring the right people and reducing the turnover rate.

“We also need open lines of communication so our employees won’t worry about their job security. The more we communicate with our staff, the higher the level of engagement. It is important to conduct ‘Employee Engagement Surveys’ in order to hear from our employees and to understand their expectations, decisions and suggestions,” he added.

Future plansMr Al Sharrad shared some of his ideas and future plans for the Group. “In the near future we plan to concentrate on creating strong pipelines for talent recruitment to both enhance Group decision-making and to secure future growth. We will be working to create a Group corporate culture that attracts the best employees and to develop the next generation of corporate leaders.”
